Multi-Ship Expansions That Never Seem to Line Up

By superdave, in X-Wing

We all know some ships are stronger than others, so FFG releases new expansions that help out older ones. Some of these expansions even include multiple copies of "fix" cards. As I'm sure some of you have noticed that, like hot dogs and buns or chips and dip, these occasionally don't quite line up (the ratio with each entry indicates how many "fix" packs you'll need in order to patch up the expansions you already have). Which of these are most frustrating for you?

TIE Advanced // Imperial Raider
No problems here! Imperial Raider will cover 3x TIE Advanced expansions with its included 4x TIEx1 title and 4x Advanced Targeting Computer.

Ratio: 3x TIE Advanced : 1x Imperial Raider

Millennium Falcon / YT-2400 / TFA Core / Core / X-Wing / Rebel Transport // Heroes of the Resistance
1x Smuggling Compartment and 2x Integrated Astromech boosts a single YT freighter (either the TFA Falcon in the box or the New Hope Falcon or YT-2400) but supports an extra X-Wing (regardless of the source: a core set, Rebel Transport, or an X-Wing expansion- the T-70 expansion includes its own IA). If you own one of each core and expansion, then you have three X-Wings without Integrated Astromechs. If you have a YT already, you can never buy enough Heroes to supply every YT you own with a Smuggling Compartment.

Ratio: 0x YT freighter + 1x X-Wing-type expansion : 1x Heroes of the Resistance

A-Wing / B-Wing // Rebel Aces
Rebel Aces includes 3x Chardaan Refits but only 2x A-Wing Test Pilots. This bothers me: if you buy another A-Wing, then you have enough Refits but not enough AWTP. It also includes 2x B-Wing/E2, which covers one B-Wing expansion with no problem.

Ratio: 1x A-Wing + 1x B-Wing : 1x Rebel Aces (with an extra Chardaan Refit)

TIE Interceptor // Imperial Aces

Imperial Aces includes two Interceptors and two Royal Guard TIE titles, Hull Upgrades, Shield Upgrades, Targeting Computers... but no extras. Aces stands well on its own, but doesn't include enough to handle its included ships plus an existing Interceptor expansion. Argh: if you can never buy enough Imp Aces to supply every Interceptor with a title.

Ratio: 0x TIE Interceptor : 1x Imperial Aces

TIE Defender / TIE Bomber // Imperial Veterans
2x of each Defender title, 2x Bomber titles. A perfect ratio for buffing existing expansions, unless you want to run low-skill generics (then you'll have to purchase extra single-ship expansions, then extra Vet expansions to cover those). To fly a 3x Delta Defender x7 list, you have to buy 3x TIE Defenders and 2x Imperial Veterans. By this point, you'll have 5 Defenders and 4 of each title, so you need another Vets to get things to come out even.
Ratio: 1x TIE Bomber + 1x TIE Defender : 1x Imperial Veterans

Z-95 / Y-Wing / Firespray-31 / HWK-290 // Most Wanted
2x of each buff for the Y-Wing (salvaged astromechs, Bomb Loadout, BTL-A4 title) and 2x Autoblaster Turret, plus the extra pilots for the Firespray and HWK, make this pretty well balanced. However, those little Z-95s don't want to fly for the Rebels- there's no way to get extra generic pilots for the Rebel Zs.

Ratio: 1x Y-Wing + 0x Z-95 + 1x Slave 1 + 1x HWK-290 : 1x Most Wanted

Yeah i dont get why the HOTR box only has 1 smuggling compartment.

Odds are you wont want more than 1 in a regular game, but Epic or the rare double YT list (either of them) will want multiples. I have a Dash + Chewie list that uses smuggling compartments but i really, REALLY dont wanna buy another HOTR lol

Luckily for you, the market has found an equilibrium. Buy expansions, take cards, sell extra mini's (Ebay, FB Mini Group), etc.to recoup most of your costs, and the folks in the Painting and Modification forum will buy them so they can chop them up and form them into various stages of awesomeness.

If you scan the HotR box thoroughly you will discover a small compartment containing a second smuggling compartment card

As someone that bought 1 x TIE Interceptor and 2 x Imperial Aces, only having 1 Alpha has been a little disappointing.

ha that would be quite clever. And annoying since who keeps the box lol

Maybe you could....I don't know...use the epic ships that you buy instead of just selling them on eBay for cost recovery (without the good stuff).

C'mon, everyone knows you can't use those ships in The Game of "real" X-Wing! <_<

The only Epic ship he mentioned was listed as "no problems!"

Well, 'cept the Transport, but the problem there was HotR, not the Transport.

I'm super happy that they threw in 2 copies of Integrated Astromech in HotR box. Now my core T-70 isn't left out and/or I can fun a full squad of T-65's.

A-wing cards are a bit problematic because of the 5 A-wing swarm.

Imperial Aces was a colossal screw-up if you ask me. No reason that pack should have come with two interceptors. Many of the pilots were just hot garbage. And it did nothing to help the Interceptors you already owned. The lack of the original generics is just salt in the wound.

Your fix offers greater value in my estimate than the fabeled T-65 fix. In my epic games, I've found the T-65s to be just fine.

The T-65 has been fine for most of it's career IMO, but with ACE-Winggah, it is better off in EPIC.

:)

I don't have any experience with Epic, so I can't really comment on it. Are there "fixes" in Epic besides the TIE Advanced/Raider? It seems like the Construction Droid in one of the Epics is offered in multiple- what's the thought there?

The real "fix" for Epic came with the Gozanti. There are 3 new Modifications for epic ships that really help them out. They needed a bit of a boost. These 3 Mods are pretty cool and work on all the ships. They allow you to really customize your ship better and make it more efficient.

The Construction Droid is only in the Raider, but you get 2 copies. It allows you to flip a Critical Hit face down. Crits are really bad in Epic. They can win/lose you the game.

Also, epic is a lot of fun. I really like epic. There are a lot of things that are not considered viable in regular X-wing that are really good in epic. As stated, the T-65 is a really good ship. It's affordable. It's got good firepower. It's not easy to kill. It's got Torpedoes. It's got a good dial. When I say good dial, I mean it's pretty wide open. You can do all the speeds from 1-4 that don't require you to turn around, which is pretty good. It's not as fast as an A-wing, but it has more firepower. It is much faster than a B-wing, but has the same reliability with Integrated Astromech.

If you play Epic you can pretty much throw out what even numbers you like although I guess there is a maximum of eight ships of a given type so you only need that many fixes.

Integrated Astromech: Maybe you'd run XXXX if you've got four of them but how often to people do that and how necessary would that be? You're a lot more likely to see XXX or X-Wings with something else.

TIE Advanced fixes: It's great that the box provides fixes for +3 ships as that is all you'll ever run in a standard game. The biggest complaint against them is simply how you get them.

A-Wing: It makes a little sense that there are more cost reducers than EPT boosters as the Refit can go anywhere but the Test Pilot requires some PS to start with. It'll be nice to have more but only if you're already swimming in A-Wings but the box set makes for a good expansion. If you run a full A-Wing you may need two RAces but otherwise your A-Wings should be fine.

B-Wings: Do you regularly run more than two of these? I find the expansion and RAces to be enough.

Imperial Aces: Triple Aces may be a thing so having three copies of the Royal Guard title could be nice. Where I am actually most disappointed in the box is the lack of Alpha help for when you want to swarm them and also Royal Guard base tokens in case you want to run two of them and on of their uniques which backs those tokens. I'm sure hindsight would love to see a pair of Autothrusters in the box instead of either the Hull or Shield upgrades.

Most Wanted: In this set I'm most disappointed by all of the cardboard space wasted on extra dials when I would have rather had a few more base tiles to get additional use out of the Z-95s I already owned and that were in the box. If you fly Zscum the Z-expansions do you no good.
