How is this for a fun episode IV time period build, thoughts

By dharris9308, in X-Wing

U-wing; Cassian Andor, VI, Enhanced scopes, Jyn Erso, Inspiring recruit, Pivot wing, Tactical Jammer.

X-wing; Wedge Antillies, R5-P9, Rage, Vectored thrusters.

X-wing; Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, Adaptability, Integrated astromech.

This seems like a fun list to play. Thoughts

It does look fun, but there is a sub forum for list building discussion. :)

R5-P9 was Ekelarc Yong's astromech. He's a gray squadron Y-Wing pilot at the Battle of Endor. So, I'm not sure when the little droid would have joined the Rebellion, but he's not confirmed as a Rebel asset until Episode VI. Not sure this deviates too much from your Episode IV timeline goals, but just in case wanted to point out.

Oh, the list itself looks fun, but it'll never do reliable enough damage to Palp Aces or X7s. Fenn Rau will slice and dice with arc dodging and is nearly capable of killing an X-Wing a turn on his own. Once Kylo Ren is out, Wedge will be incredibly vulnerable to taking Blinded Pilot crits and losing two full rounds of attacking. A Kanan + Captain Rex + Biggs list will force Wedge to only be able to roll 1 Red die at Biggs each round, so Rage and his pilot ability are largely wasted, meanwhile Kanan will double-tap TLT Wedge for probably 3-4 damage a turn. Dengaroo can joust this list and very likely kill Wedge on the first pass while probably only losing a couple of shields on the opening exchange.

So, it looks like a fun thematic list. But sadly, those sorts of lists can't win games these days.

That Cassian/Wedge combo is mean.... swap Luke out for Jan. Sure, Wedge dies and your list is kaput, but that damage output.... drool worthy.

Key word in the subject line is "fun". Some people do just play for fun. Not every list has to be tournament capable.

Veteran Instincts and Enhanced Scopes seems like an odd combination.

I get the idea - Cassian acts as blocker, and hands out focus to whoever needs it, and takes away stress from Wedge to allow him to rage against the machine.

I'd probably take Adaptability on him, and Draw Their Fire on Luke. He's definitely the lower priority target of the three, and can recover shields, and doesn't need a specific EPT to do his job - a prime target for a bit of judicious damage reassignment.

I know what you are going for with Rage on Wedge and Inspiring Recruit on Casian, but then it kind of defeats the purpose of Vectored Thrusters on Wedge since you will always be Raging. I would get rid of Rage, Inspiring Recruit and Tactical Jammer(who's hiding behind the Uwing anyway) and give Wedge push the Limit. Then you can TL(same effect as Rage) and barrel roll for only 1 stress and use Jyn to give Wedge the focus he needs.

Oh I entirely agree, but he asked for thoughts. He didn't say "hey, here is a fun thematic list that I know is just super casual." So I'm making sure he's advised that this list will not win any matchups with meta squads barring some severe opponent mistakes.

Sadly, if his local scene is anything like mine, even during casual X-Wing game night everyone there will be sporting something Top Tier like Dengaroo, Palp Aces, X7s, Fangaroo, or TLT Ys. Even though it's a casual game everyone is always looking to practice for the next Regional, National, Whatever. And I get it, it's like a Prisoner's Dilemma. Why bring a casual fun much around list if you know there's even a small chance your opponent will have brought a Top Tier list. Getting curbstomped for six or seven rounds as you watch all your ships futilely die is not very fun, no matter how cool or thematic your list might be. Trust me, I've tried.

I'd love to know where this magic local community is where everyone is always pulling out TIE Punishers and T-65s and Firesprays and Star Vipers where one could actually go and expect to have fun with a casual or thematic list. Because unless there's an explicit gentlemen's agreement beforehand about what's allowed and not allowed to be played, I find you just still end up flying against Top Tier net lists more often than not.

I wouldn't say it's super casual. I mean, it's not like flying all HWKs or something.

If you had a casual night and people brought top tier, I'd refuse to play the people that brought that. I'd shame them for bringing it on a casual night.

Parker, Banner, Kent, and Wayne game store in Cornelius, North Carolina. Game nights are Thursday for X-wing. Also occasional games on the weekend. Let me know when you are coming. I also hear there are other casual nights in town, but I only go to that one.

I hear from a lot of people that they play only casual game nights. Where do you live? I can try to see if I can find anyone.

That'd be our local FLGS where I've helped cultivate an environment of fun and casual times for playing, and for soul-crushing meta list nights other nights. It's all about what you want your community to be, and how you help shape it. Last week, we were running Original Release / Wave 1 ships only. It was a great night.
