Skyrim in space

By warchild1x, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So my friends and I were spitballing ideas for the types of campaigns we like to run/play and we casually agreed that the best campaigns are story driven by the characters and while there may be an overarching plotline, it may not be the prime focus all the time. I described it as "Skyrim in space". You're tasked to save the uni.... oh look sidequest! And before you know it you're half way across the galaxy, trying to get a dathomiran crone her magic bucket back so she can pay of some tusken raiders and meanwhile the universe burns because you forgot to stop by Whiterun and advise the Jarl that there were ISD's in Riverwood.

Which then spurred a rampant session of figuring out a Skyrim based SW campaign.

This is the random nonsense that we came up with.

Base Planet S'krym

Main starport: Whiterun

Ship name Dovahkiin

Stormtroopers you encounter randomly say "I used to be a smuggler till I took a blaster in the knee"

You can join either the Imperials or the Rebels (Stormcloaks/Imperials)

Join the companions and eventually get turned into Jedi (sadly there is no cure)

Your main quest is to destroy the ancient sith tainted Krayt Dragon All Du-eeen. Known as the world eater.

You have to travel to different planets to find ancient Jedi words to help destroy the beast.

I doubt I'll use any of it (other than the Stormtrooper line which is definitely going to be fit into my next game), but it was amusing and I thought I'd share.

It's a lot easier to convert it the other way around.

An evil wizard gains control of the kingdom through various spells, and his anti-paladin with a fiery red flaming sword is in charge of hunting down the Order of the Whatever, sworn to bring down the evil wizard.

The evil wizard floats around on his flying fortress, raining down magical doom upon kingdoms and cities that don't fall in line, and the White Guard is the symbol of his power.

Etc.

I've always thought going to fantasy stories to make a sci-fi campaign and vice-versa could be fun. Your players may think you are a genius until they figure it out and it would save creative time thinking up the setting. It never got off the ground, but I once had plans for a D&D fantasy campaign with a recognizable source:

  • Fallen glorious and just theocratic kingdom has been conquered and replaced by evil High King.
  • New evil pantheon of darkness has replaced the old good pantheon of light which has been subverted.
  • Evil High King is a high priest of darkness. Right hand man is an Anti-Paladin.
  • A few good clerics and paladins exist, but in hiding.
  • Evil fortress upon a magical flying island delivering death with evil dragons to any town that might object to the rule of the High King.
  • Hordes of undead and/or orcs used by the High King.
  • Quest for a Holy Avenger sword lost during the fall of the good, theocratic kingdom.
  • Discovering a hermit who turns out to be a high level cleric, the last high priest of the fallen kingdom.

I've had discussions with old RPG friends of a similar campaign idea based upon Lord of the Rings in space. We came up with the Ring being a small, powerful artifact starship created by the Architects/Elders. It's easy to come up with an interesting campaign when you are committing grand larceny of ideas and just re-skinning them.

Stealing this for Friday nights game.... Brilliant :)

Apart from the flaming sword, that was essentially the setup of Eragon (AKA "Star Wars with a Dragon").

If you made it through all four books, definitely.

Excellent idea! Whiterun Starport has a nice ring to it. I'm yoinking this for a future adventure.

Whiterun Clinic might be the kind of place to hit after visiting an unsavory brothel.

I have an NPC in my SW named Skeever. He's an infobroker and fixer. Pretty much based on Badger from Firefly.

I don’t do Skyrim, but I have been told that all problems can be solved with a simple “Fuss Row Dah”.

I don’t know who “Dah” is, or why they’re kicking up such a “Fuss” over a “Row”, but there you go.

NPC droid given to you named L-DA: "I am SWORN to carry your BURDENS..."

I'm going to have to use it in my next session too.
