U-wing in HOTAC

By rabid1903, in X-Wing

Afternoon everyone,

The U-Wing seems like a great ship to add to the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster campaign. I'm wondering what restrictions everyone would feel that it would need.

The largest conflict I can see is this vs the Hawk. Previously, the Hawk and the B-Wing were the only way to access crew slots. However, the Hawk has a turret and the B-Wing has a cannon which give those ships a niche that the U-Wing can't touch. The Hawk will be able to win out as a support ship that can skirt the edges of the fight and the B-Wing will do much better diving into the fight than the U-Wing.

With this, what house rules does everyone think will be needed to balance this out?

I'm thinking to make it so you have to upgrade to it from the Hawk at PS 5. That, or paying a flat 10 experience at PS 4 to upgrade to it.

I would make it a normally costed upgrade ship until there is some evidence that it is too powerful. It has some superior aspects, but I think that the large base is a notable drawback. Several of the HotAC missions involve maps littered with asteroids/debris, ion clouds, or mines that could be problematic for a large base ship.

The large base is actually more of a problem than just the terrain...good flying can make up forthe terrain.

But the problem with large base ships in almost all of the games weve tried with them, is the AI's reaction to them. Especially if the ship has boost or B-rolling abilities from upgrades or pilot abilities. The AI just cant compensate for the size of the movement in many cases.

Large ship boosting was one of the problems I was wondering about. I didn't expect the AI to not be able to react though.

We could limit it to no reposition abilities? That's a pretty big handicap, and wouldn't need to pay any more experience or have any other restriction to purchasing it.

It's an interesting question and I really have no idea until some people try it out. I would think that even with Engine Upgrade you would still have a hard time not bumping into stuff with a large based ship. If you have a lot of Tie Fighters on the board, there might be limited space to move and maybe you can't even Boost. Maybe I'm wrong. Not sure.

The U-boat has a lot of hull and shield to chew through. I can it mostly being at 2 Agility every round, so you have 2 green dice and 10 shots to blast through. That's even more than the B-wing at 8 hits and 1 Agility. It could be broken in that regard. I have seen an untouched B-wing taken down in one turn by a squad of Tie Fighters (rolled all hits for every shot and zero evade).

It also has 3 firepower, which is much better than the HWK. It can also take Torpedoes and Extra Munitions to liven up it's arsenal. This thing will be able to blast whatever is in front of it.

I am having a really hard time figuring out if it would be too much or not. There is a Facebook group for HotAC and I know the creator is on it. You might try there.

If there's felt to be an issue with power, you can always go with the same response I have to the ARC - allow it as a starting ship, even, but allow access to the title further up the 'tree'.

Personally, I don't see any real problems - yes, the U-wing has a big base, but it's not massively more powerful than (say) a B-wing - and it doesn't have innate barrel roll or boost abilities. Yes, you could buy them, but it's not like it's got a turret, so it can't play arc-dodger like (say) a YT-1300 could.

It would be great to put in a HotAC scenario, though! Guard the troop transports as they move in to attack.

The u-wing will make more sense in some missions than the yt-1300. The refuelling station for instance.

Agreed that at the very least the U-wing would go great in missions. May have to try to design an arc once I get some time on my hands.

I see no problem using the thing.
