I'm with Phil on the Salvage Crane. It really breaks the narrative for me. The best I can do to explain it is that it comes with a secret "MacGyver" EPT that takes up no EPT slot. The Bomb/Torpedo/whatever they're equipped with is actually made out of junk in the first place, the Scum pilot is just really crafty and knows how to do something clever with junk. So the crane just gives them access to more junk to do their trick with.

This game mechanic would be so much easier to swallow if it was something like:

Salvaged Parts

modification

Action: Flip over a (cannon, turret, torpedo or missile) upgrade you had equipped and discarded. Then roll one attack die. On a [hit] result, discard this card.

Great podcast. I have beefs with the salvage crane too; already whined about it on the forum. I just think you must have a crew that's doing the work completing a weapon; the crane is just a tool to get the scraps on board. Plus, what kind of crane can reach out to range 2? Maybe this idea was one of the designer's wife's creation, and, like all us guys, he couldn't say no....

I haven't whined about the crane... Nor will I since I'm more concerned with my classic rebel fighters suffering as they are... But considering the 'time' a single turn would take cinematically the whole salvage op bugs me.

But hey, just means I'll never use it.

That's why I like my MacGyver explanation. You're not reconstructing a torpedo, you're just hurling burning trash at people.

i love the Out-tro music, you should play that more often as an Intro!! lol.

Great work again, the MacGuyver explanation works well lol. I'm thinking an Alt Art Card with Richard Dean Anderson on it could work well.

There we go, lets make a crew card of MacGyver, and with him on board the Salvage Crane can create weapons. Maybe he can also be used to repair critical damage cards?

Our Teespring campaign ends on Tuesday; if you want a shirt, order now!

On Phil's rant on Scavenging Crane ... so where do you draw the line for your suspension of disbelief? Why is it OK to have a space wizard reach out of his ship, across vacuum, and tear things off of other ships or pilots (Darth Vader, Kylo Ren) but it's not OK to assemble something out of space junk?

Personally, I'm of the mind that once you accept the rationale of "a space wizard did it" everything beyond that point is fair game.

Edit: Since we don't yet know what Paul Heaver's Wave 10 card is ... anyone think this is his?

For me, it's all about what's been established as real for the universe in question. So, we know from Star Wars movies and other stuff that space wizards are a real thing in the star wars universe. They have powers that are largely indistinguishable from magic, from where we sit.

But we also have a lot of information about the level of technology that everyone is using, and a sense of what is realistic within the star wars universe in that regard. A scavenger crane that turns newly blasted hot scrap into functional technology instantly or near-instantaneously is not something that exists or could exist in the star wars universe that I am familiar with.

You haven't spent enough time wandering around the dark underbelly of the EU, then. Factory droids that move, rapidly tear down, and reassemble entire city blocks, pooping out entire functioning factories in minutes to hours, were featured in the X-Wing novels. Similar types of technology showed up in the comics (some good examples in Dark Empire, as I recall).

During a dogfight? Not as I recall, though I could certainly imagine the reverse of the buzz droids from the prequels being the equivalent, but it's not much of an intellectual leap from those flights of fancy in the EU.

Ooh... Was it World Devastators in that comic series with Emperor clones? Dark Empire or some such nonsense? Didn't read it... Anyway, robotic giant factory ships that took materials and created fighters and ships...

Wait, I'm not helping my case. Burn, scavenger crane! Burn with cleansing fire!
