Disguised BX droid commando

By A7T, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

"To the world, the being beneath this suit of worn Mandalorian armor is Almon Skor, a mid-tier Mandalorian bounty hunter; in actuality, he is a droid whose only directive is to avenge his master by any means necessary."

Hi, all; I'm in the process of brainstorming a commando droid PC who disguises himself in his dead master's armor to keep his memory alive while unraveling the conspiracy behind his murder and bringing the culprits to justice by any means necessary. How would you recommend stating out such a character with starting level XP? Any suggestion how a voice mimic ability would work? Thanks!

Do you want to mimic any voice? Then you might need the False Voice Transmitter http://swrpg.viluppo.net/equipment/gear/2262/from Strongholds of Resistance. But it has a rather high encumbrance (4) and is expensive. If you only want to mimic your old master's voice, you could try to convince your GM to just let you do that. Or that at least with the helmet on you sound just like him.

May the Force - no wait, droids can't use the Force. Never mind.

In the movie, C3P0 could do it with ease in the Ewok´s village. Protocol droid probably have this option as default. BX droid also, there is one episode where the BX droids infiltrate a Republic outpost and one of the droids speaks with a clone voice.

The droid is going to need to fight, so Agility or Brawn will need to be at least 3. It will also need to lie, to keep the ruse up, but stealth and skullduggery could be very handy as well, so a decent cunning. Vigilance will be important too, perhaps a Willpower of 2.

Skills then need to be the sneaky stuff, Vigilance and combat of some type, what specialisations does that lead to:

Assasin covers most of it, just not the Deception to keep the lie going

Performer is an interesting one, it lacks the stealth, but really plays up the acting side of the character, with decent Melee to boot.

Gunslinger and Scoundrel offer great choices for combat, as well as Deception, Vigilance is a career skill so their both good there too.

An Agitator would be an interesting direction to take the character, really focus on the deception side of things

Saboteur is a great choice, blow up those that do you wrong! But you will need to put extra XP into Deception since it's not a career skill.

The Trailblazer is quite interesting, it presents a lot of ways to deal with problems, but not many ways of finding information, no Deception again.

Then finally Investigator, it's a crazy FaD spec focused on finding information about crimes, it has zero combat, but to be honest that can come later from another specialisation.

So what would I choose? Smuggler! With the view of getting Gunslinger after a few sessions.

Characteristics of 2, 3, 1, 4, 1, 1.

Free Career skill Ranks in: Deception, Underworld, Perception, Space, Streetwise, Vigilance.

Free Spec skill ranks in: Cool, Deception, Ranged Light.

5xp on Convincing Demeanor

10xp on Vigilance 2

Take a full 10 additional Obligation to get the extra 3000 Credits. Getting some Laminate Armour, a nice Pistol and some sundry items.

You end up with Soak 5, 12 WT, 11 ST (low, but I couldn't find a way to avoid it). You fight when you have to, but initially it's about hiding and finding information. Gunslinger car really put out some damage, so that will be the big combat step, but initially I would dive down the left side of Scoundrel and get everything on the top row. Some more ranks in Ranged Light, Vigilance, Cool Underworld and Streetwise would be a good idea too, particularly the two initiative skills.

I had a PC play as an old BX commando droid. My fix for the voice issue was that she could only mimic a voice she was programmed to mimic, and she could only have one program for that running at a time. So long as she was mimicking the voice she got a boost die on Deception checks, with the occasional setback die if the deception relied on body language or intimate knowledge of the person in question.

Thanks for the suggestions; @Richardbuxton, I assume you mean starting out as a Scoundrel?

Yeah, Scoundrel. Investigator would be an interesting second spec too instead of Gunslinger.

Worked like a charm; went with a standard blaster pistol, a handheld comlink, and an extra reload, along with the Laminate Armor, leaving me with 50 credits left over. I'll be putting this guy in my back pocket for now, but he looks to be a fun character to play.

Should I ever use this character in a game, I'll suggest these rules to the GM; thanks!

The fluff from Laminate Armor says "it typically includes vision magnification and integrated comlinks to others attuned to the same frequency". Would this count as the armor handing a build in handheld comlink and electrobinoculars?

I generally say no. To me it says that they can be integrated into the armour without using hard points, but you still have to purchase the extra pieces.

Think of it like optional extras, you pay a bit more and the manufacturer will provide items that are designed to suit.

For a droid it's basically irrelevant anyway since those items can be directly integrated into the actual chassis of the Droid. But for meatbags who don't have that option it's a nice benefit.
