Austin is dead. I know noone from Austin.
I live in Austin and have a Star Wars group of about 12 players which plays both X-wing and Armada.
We play in our homes rather than go to stores.

Armada is my first miniatures game and also the first time I experienced the "store presence".
I was a boardgamer, and for me games are played in the comfort of your own house where you can drink alcohol and play a different game if you feel like it.
So when people say "armada is dead cuz stores don't play it", I'm just thinking "Meh? It's way better to play at home anyway"
I have the mats, I have the space, why bother with a store?

ICv2 would disagree that Armada is dead.
If you really want to know when a game is dead, look at the released of expension or if you still see a game selling in stores.
For now, I see both...
So still in good shape.
And don't forget one thing, Armada is maybe less present in term of representation in tournement in store (more because of logistic problem for space and time) than other games but still a number one in quality and diversity. Take the example of D&D, you don't see so many people playing but I can ensure you that the game is not dead. It will always depend on what you make your statement.
I don't understand the time/space problem that a lot of people tend to have with Armada. The king of tabletop for the longest time was 40k. 40k tourneys require 2+ hr rounds and a lot of 4x6 tables + terrain. Armada requires 2+ hr rounds, 3x6 tables, and a no terrain. And the rules are still less complicated than 40k too.
You want to know the signs of a dead game? I was a backer of another miniatures game called Golem Arcana. While the game was fun, it felt from the start that something was off. It had little store presence, absolutely no one heard of the game except the backers and, most importantly, the forums were mostly silent.
IMO, just the amount of posts seen here is a sign of a game doing well. What would help Armada to get even more players is to have more youtube videos (still, thank you to those who are taking the time to create some). But one thing for sure, every time I show the game to someone, they're impressed and want to get in as well.

I see Ben posting open play nights on Austin Fleet Command all the time--do you not go to those?

Yeah I was the other guy for about a year before I gave up on it. Several stores have tried to get tournaments or just meet ups groups going to no avail. Meanwhile you can't find a store in Austin that doesn't have a regular xwing or warhammer group. It's pretty much the same story everywhere except San Antonio. Also I start Austin fleet command so I might know about the scene as tried for year to get one going only to hear it sells well from store owners but I don't really know why? no one plays it at my store, repeatedly until I gave in to the truth. People are buying Armada because it looks cool on the shelf it's novel but that is it.

Guess you didn't read the thread?
There are lots of people in Austin who play the game. Just not in stores.

Well, here's my dumb logic to this: Armada is a pretty costly game. Costly games require money, money that you get by working. And, you love Armada so much that you work very hard to get everything, so you don't have time to play the game anymore.
Why am I saying this? Because that's just my case currently. I'd like to get more games going, but it's kind of hard when you work most evenings and weekends...

Lol. So it wasn't even true that the Austin scene was dead ![]()

yet any night of the week I can find you a active xwing group playing somewhere. Many of whom share that same problem like me.

/shrug We're not even a million people in Quebec City yet the community group on facebook holds 50 members and there are often calls for game nights. It just so happens that me personally can't attend.
I usually play at home with a group. It's much easier than transporting all my stuff to the store and much more relaxed for everybody. We're all drinkers and or smokers so chilling at the house makes for much more enjoyable casual games. I have tried playing at my local game store twice but both times it ended up just being against a guy who comes over and plays at the house anyway so ultimately wasn't worth the effort.

yep that why it's dead. I play myself more often than not it's either that or Ben. I pretty much know of only one other player in the Austin metro area that I can play. I know also have a clue who the twelve players mentioned before are they are xwing regulars. A lot of them hate Armadas tournament set up and play at home. Well you can tell that to the people you travel to play regionals and go to worlds... Armada is dead, and right on the cusp of wave 5.

Wow. That means there is another 12 austin players out there. We don't go to x-wing or Armada tournaments. We're mostly tech industry types in our 40s plus wives and friends.

armada is dead because people prefer to play in the comfort of their homes?

Wow that describes the average Xwing player to a tee. I see them all the time playing at LGSs yet I never see you guys playing. Except Ben begging for players to show to play Saturday even he isn't regular anymore.

Once the holidays are past, I'm going to have a 1/month Armada day at my house. Feel free to PM me if you want to check it out. New peeps are always welcome.
I'm up north off Parmer.

Playing with strangers in a crowded and possibly noisy space doesn't really compete with gaming with friends in a relaxed environment.
I went to local stores a half dozen times. Every time I ended up playing against someone who brought an insane tourney-hard list and an attitude of WaaC.

Wasn't talking mechanics. Just the camaraderie. I'm sorry @BladeWing24, Armada is definitely not for you. This is not the game you're looking for. Move along. Move along.
Edited by CaribbeanNinjaSimple it isn't yet, X wing is the best at the moment Armada needs a major rework to become the best. Will it be? Maybe if they fix the problem of big expensive ships being largely being trounced by stuff that should go pop if it faced such a thing. Also they should drop the admirals and objectives and turn limits. I am tired of admirals and objectives that are poorly written ruining the fun. In fact one obejective was so poorly written only an idiot would take it even after the wave 4 ship that was clearly designed to make it viable couldn't.THIS is why Armada is the best. I don't think this is the right game for you. I think you'll probably enjoy xwing more. Bigger crowd too.
