Limited Edition Ships

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

I wouldn't mind if they did consolidation packs, like: 2 T-65s and all of the pilots + upgrades from all the various T-65 containing SKUs. That way a new player could just jump in without needing to track down every last upgrade that are scattered across so many different packs.

But to do it properly, FFG would have to not include any new upgrades in that pack- or else we'd just be in the same place.

No thanks.

My preferred solution is a campaign box that helps fill a new player with good upgrades, and give a HoTAC like game experience would be amazing.

I could see a way to do a limited set that is "tourney legal" for a limited time but is upgrade cards only. Rotate in and out different upgrade cards but ships and pilots are always good. Could be released with new ship paint schemes but not new pilots.

... the game is the highest selling miniature game on the market.

Are you certain of that? I am under the impression that the "highest selling miniature game on the market" is from a company in Nottingham.

Pretty certain it got knocked off the top a while ago.

I'm not sure what's with this, but I'm sorry?

Oh I ain't mad at you... but Dam-Dat-FFG waste of time with limited ships.

I want them to finish the other ships that should be regular in the product range.

;)

More likely we'd simply get X-Wing 2nd edition than an actual rotation or "Standard" block of expansions that are legal.

Pre Order X-Wing: The PC Game, with season pass and get a Limited Edition Assault Gunboat.

Only available when you redeem a. X-Wing Challenge Coin

Another product from the "Horrible Idea Factory", thank you!

Now that we are essentially out of ships to make...

...say what?

I think this happens organically to a certain extent. I've been in a few FLGS who hold a limited stock.

-The latest waves

-The ever popular/still competitive

-A Khiraxz that just won't sell

With the Upcoming page letting everyone know what is currently sold out I think most accept not having all the range all the time. (Also created the beautiful time where K-wings were selling on eBay for a lot more than retail!)

I'd buy certain special edition ships if they were especially high quality. I would hate if there were limited "pay to win" cards included in certain limited edition ships though.

I only support this idea if they do that for the Gunboat.

A Gunboat limited run would sell out faster than Worlds tickets.

The aftermarket would be insane.

Hahahaha...nope not for ages now the abortion they released to replace wfb didn't even chart.

They just released a box of ten infantry for £30 for an army that needs you to own £60 worth of army books, GW's a bad joke fading into insignificance because they refuse to fix insane prices and rules.

In a growing sector they continue to shrink.

Another product from the "Horrible Idea Factory", thank you!

And thank you so much for your unmitigated positive support.

So, in a certain way, I'm not suggesting anything that doesn't happen, anyways.

Are you sure? To me, it seems like your solution would be randomly to remove a ship from the game simply because it was in the wrong place at the wrong time. :P

you are most welcome! If you would prefer a trophy for taking part, please let me know, but a bad idea is a bad idea, no matter how it's called out :)

No trophy necessary. I'm from the generation before that.

To be honest, I was not trying to propose an idea, I was simply wondering what might happen when the list of possible purchases gets quite large. M:TG features out-of-print cards, and Reaper Miniatures would stop making a given figurine when the mold broke, because there were always more sculps in the pipeline. I sincerely HOPE that the amount of plastic models gets to be a cumbersome factor for FFG to consider.

I admit, I've skipped pretty much all of the thread after seeing the wealth of "NO" answers.

To add to this, any ship that was in high demand, I have the financial means that I could walk into any FLGS and buy their entire stock easily and not even blink. I'd do this, then offer to sell it back to the lot of you at grossly inflated prices via EBay because I could. I'm pretty certain that I'm not the only person who could do this. Thus, this is a terrible terrible idea.

Limited edition ships is a terrible idea.

As for games stores go, as long as the ships are selling, the shops will keep them in stock. Now, at my store the older waves don't sell as well as the recent expansions, but we alway try to have one of each in stock, while we stock multiples of the current and previous wave. This is largely due to X-wing being one of three most popular games we carry (along with Magic, and WH40k). Imperial Assault & Armada doesn't sell nearly as much, so we only have a handful of those expansions. So I feel it really comes down to the popularity of a game within an area, rather than the number of expansions a store has to keep in stock.

Again, Limited Edition was a poor choice of words. Rotated Out of Production would have been better. A given ship would be offered for a significant period of time (say, a year), where anyone could get it at any time for normal market value for its production run. Way too many would be produced for it to be "rare" or "collectible," but it would not necessarily be available always or forever.

And you must miss a lot of info on these boards if you stop at the first "No" each time. :(

Having been involved with other games that have gone that way, I would rather simply quit playing the game. If they do want something exclusive, then it cannot be tournament legal including the cards. WizKids did that with some of its games and it sucked!

At this point, I would like to see Big Box sets where you have one of each at some discounted price over buying each one.

Otherwise, no, do not want. Terrible idea.

To ask a counter point: Why? What benefit would FFG or FFG consumers get from limited production runs? FFG would simplify their SKU offerings a bit, but would have to offset that with some other offering to make up for the upgrade cards in the ships that are out of production, so that's fairly well offset. FFG consumers would have a simpler product set to select from, but that's a learning curve, not really a huge burden for a game like this. I don't see a compelling reason to do it. I see a LOT of compelling reasons to not limit production runs.

Consumers get no advantage; obviously the bigger the selection, the happier people are.

Perhaps with the internet mode of commerce, with no need for in-store displays and dust-collecting inventory, the whole idea is out-of-date.

Maybe, just maybe, the only redeeming feature would be the notion that there are already 2 ways to buy several kinds of ships, and I would hate to think that I would never see Phoenix Squadron A-Wings because FFG shies away from releasing a 3rd version of the same ship.
