Limited Edition Ships

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

As the number of available options continues to grow, I wonder if FFG (and FLGS) are going to be able/willing to have a complete line of 40+ X-Wing models.

I makes me wonder when/if X-Wing will begin to have releases that are produced for a period of time and then "retired" to allow for a different ship to take its place.

Limited edition ships are a terrible idea. Star Trek Attack Wing has them and I really hate it, even though I have most of them.

Yeah that's a terrible idea it locks future customers out of ever owning those ships.

This game is already beyond bloated. Anything like that would be a clear sign to quit the game once and for all.

No. No. No. No. No.

NO !!!

I refuse to support games with limited edition/exclusive prize ships. So I hope not.

If you hate over played meta lists, just imagine the tournament full of them as everyone desperately fighters for that season's blatantly over powered prize ship to stay relevant for next season.

Alt-art cards are a form of limited edition, which I think is perfectly fine. Conceptually, they could do the same with alt-art ship models as tournament prize support, though I think that would be much more expensive with very limited payoff for them (and a LOT of money for the eBay entrepreneur).

Sorry, perhaps "Limited Edition" was a poor choice of words. They would not be special editions and/or only available to some, but rather ships would enter production for a period of time and then be phased out of production.

For example, the Rogue One ships would be available for a year, then "retire" when Episode VIII comes out to be replaced by ships from that movie.

Or, as an alternate question, what happens when there are several dozen ships in production at once? Can FFG and FLGSs continue to produce and stock huge volumes of ships? Hopefully, when this game reaches the 10 year mark, there will be up to 100 ships available. . .

True, so there are some core ships that would never go away, perhaps the Original Trilogy ships, for example.

But what if the A-Wing was "rereleased" every couple of years with a new paint job and different pilots. The game could continue to grow without retailers having to stock 3 kinds of A-Wings.

(Looks at how many SKUs there are in an LCG)

I don't think that is going to be an issue for X-wing. Will rotation happen? It is always possible. But, the X-wing release model doesn't really support that kind of thing.

I think we need to see at what FFG's plans are in terms of keeping rotated LCG expansions in print.

While I can't speak for FFG, the game is the highest selling miniature game on the market. They have the manufacturing capacity.

As for local game stores, if they can't stock it all at once I'm sure they can order it for you. If anything, if you do buy at local game stores I bet the owner would love you if you preorder stuff in advance. Knowing how much to order can be a pain.

Pre Order X-Wing: The PC Game, with season pass and get a Limited Edition Assault Gunboat.

It's still an issue. Imagine if x7 was only available for a year and you wanted to get into the game after. You either know buy the market up copies on ebay or play at a disadvantage to older players.

Well, theoretically, if the x7 is not available there is something that functions in its stead and within the balance of the game, so you are only out of luck if you insist on flying Defenders.

Trust me, I would love to see this game in 10 years with 100 models still in production. But also, at that point, if they are selling 2 HWKs per year, would it make any sense to retool the die? Those things do wear out, eventually.

Maybe maybe maybe

MAYBE

...if it's JUST repaints.- no new cards.

Terrible idea.

Every ship has had its use over the course of the game. Yep, there are a few stinkers but I think at this point the only ship to not make the cut at worlds is the Kfighter for scum. Even the HWK (Jan) backing up Han made a run awhile ago and the Syck made it this year.

If a local shop won't make the order for you it is time to buy online.

I'm all about it. But I'm a collector more than a player. I would welcome any variation in paints to make it a unique ship. I'm sure others feel the same but aren't saying anything especially other customizer like myself.

I don't really play competitive, but I think the alt ship art cards are fine. If they wanted to they could always release alternate paint schemes for models, like a red squadron t-70 x-wing, any of the named scum z-95 pilots, a Corran green X-wing, and other such different options but no new pilots or upgrades, just the model. Then if they see the demand is high enough for the prize they can just release it in an ace's pack or the like alongside new upgrades if they so choose.

When FFG decides to do that X-Wing as we currently know it will officially be dead.

For all of you clamouring for an X-Wing 2.0 that is where you would get your wish.

In some ways FFG does retire old stuff as power creep renders it less useful compared to new releases at least until a new release comes and revitalizes the old release alongside what may be a shiny new update. Of course that update may upset the owners of the obsolete ships who now need to buy something new to use their old ships competitively but that's far better than just needing to throw out your old stuff.

Alternative Art/Paint as prizes is fine as it doesn't alter the mechanics of playing the game one bit.

It's a terrible idea, but isn't Sabine's tie in effect what you asking for?

Now that we are essentially out of ships to make,i could see some sort of "fresh paint schemes" releases happening.

If it's only paint it won't affect a lot of people so they could also throw in a new upgrade or two and a fix or some such for each.

OMG, it was worth starting this thread just to hear someone say every ship is useful!!! :P

I think they already do this. All forty ships are not in production at the same time.

Well, OK. But all ships are currently "available;" none have been retired.

X-Wing as we currently know it will be dead just as soon as Wave X drops. The game is constantly changing. I'm only wondering if we will begin to see ships rotated out of availability.

No, not at all. That is a reapplication of a current model that will not take the place of the TIE/ln. More what I'm suggesting is that the TIE Striker is the '17 model and will be replaced in the line up by a new Imperial starfighter for '18.

I'm not sure what's with this, but I'm sorry?

... the game is the highest selling miniature game on the market.

Are you certain of that? I am under the impression that the "highest selling miniature game on the market" is from a company in Nottingham.
