What's buggin gme about the Rogue One trailer

By Hawkstrike, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Well, not the trailer per se, but something it implies about The Empire Strikes Back (that most holy of holies).

In Rogue One, we see X-wings attacking AT-ATs, and being pretty effective at causing damage. This is consistent with other places in the EU as well (Rogue Squadron smokes some AT-ATs in the X-wing novels).

So OK, if X-wing lasers are more effective against AT-ATs than Snowspeeder blasters, then why the heck did the Rebellion send their pilots against them in Snowspeeders? It's not like they didn't have the X-wings ... since the Snowspeeder pilots had to go to a rendevous point to switch ships.

Are the Rebels tactical idiots, did they forget lessons from earlier battles, or am I missing something?

First, what we are seeing on Scarif are AT-ACTs, not AT-ATs. So, probably different armor for something designed for cargo transport instead of full out assault.

Second, they were saving the X-wings for escort duty. And they clearly didn't have many for that.

been a while but didn't they use speeders cause the x-wings weren't running right in the cold? I think they said that when luke and hon took tauntauns,

The X-Wings weren't working in the cold. Don't ask how they get back into space where it's, um...

No, they couldn't go out at night because they were having trouble adapting the speeders to the cold. (Yeah -- so why not X-wings that can function in vacuum? Because the plot requires Han to find Luke on a Tauntaun and spend the night.)

Reserving -wings for escort duty, but they still have enough X-wings for the Rogues to jump in one at the end and leave?

Dont... Just dont.

Why would you even HAVE harpoons on a speeder?

They missed an opportunity to have us see some missile action in the trailer, we've only ever seen proton torperoes.

It's a tow cable.

They've used X-Wings before, to attack AT-ATs, in the book Isard's Revenge apparently, and Wedge refers to the fight on Hoth (see here for more).

But, there weren't a lot of X-Wings available at the time.

You don't know that most of the snowspeeder pilots were space fighter pilots as well.

Cold of space is different from arctic cold in space you don't get ice build up which alters flight characteristics jams sfoils together, causes all kinds of problems really.

Speeders are much simpler vehicles so they prepared them first.

Speeders also use blasters not cannons which is why they did nothing to at-at's.

Because the x wings were busy defending the transports from a TIE Fighter/ TIE BOmber aerial assault, according to the Rogue Squadron games at least.

The obvious thing to have used would be Y wings actually. Torpedoes and bombs ought to murderise walkers.

Speeders were a diversion from their main goal of getting the f off of Hoth.

I think it was asked of Pablo Hidalgo and the official answer is that the X-Wings hadn't been adapted to the cold.

The obvious counter, like below....

The X-Wings weren't working in the cold. Don't ask how they get back into space where it's, um...

So if I'm going to guess, I'd say it is more about the combination of atmosphere, cold, and moisture that limits the X-Wings' time of flight. The X-Wings basically couldn't stay in the air for very long. Long enough to leave the planet, but not long enough for a sustained fight.

The speeders were adapted for the cold - at least partially. They could take the temperatures during the day, but at night it just got too cold.

Moisture? X-Wings handle moisture just fine. Hell, you can toss one into a swamp, pull it out with the Force, and the only maintenance it needs is removing a snake from the nacelle.

Speeders were a diversion from their main goal of getting the f off of Hoth.

And one of the few things they couldn't fly directly into space to escape.

In support of OPs comment re the tacticians being chuckle-heads, can we analyse 'Attack Pattern Delta'. It seems that APD is 'Fly directly at the most shooty part of the opponent - take extra precaution to fly head-on if the opponent only has a very narrow arc of fire'.

^ I would love a remake of this game using SW: Battlefront graphics, sound, engine, etc. Maybe that's the SWX58!!!

Short Answer, the U-wings and other stuff were not made during the production of Return of the Jedi.

The Hollywood people are trying to make X-Wings into a starfighter version of a Katana; superior in every way to the evil scum it cuts down en-mass. It bugs me.

Whatever happened to the outnumbered rebellion? The grit-and-wit rebellion? The plans and secret missions rebellion? If they always win in a stand-up fight why does the Empire even exist?

And no, the Rebels aren't tactical idiots, the screenwriters are. They want to make the heroes win all the time forever, both in the past and future; the idea of the heroes being tactically inferior or having made mistakes to learn from is inconceivable to these people.

Edit: I gotta remember not to post when I'm grumpy. I still think it's lame that they're inflating the X-wing.

Given how ugly they are on top ofvthe poor design, I'm glad they didn't exist before.

What's ugly about them? The U-Wing is an awesome design, just not utilized in on-screen operations later (nor would it fit).

It's a personal thing, I don't honestly like any new ships from Disney, but for a troop transport and some sort of atmospheric superiority craft, neither look right.
