R2D2 Crew/R5 Astromech/Determination

By Jwrein1202, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I was thinking about running the Arc-170 with R2D2 crew member and R5 Astromech.

R2D2 Crew : At the end of the End phase, if you have no shields, you may recover 1 shield and roll 1 attack die. On a result, randomly flip 1 of your facedown Damage cards faceup and resolve it.

R5 Atromech : During the End phase, you may choose 1 of your faceup Damage cards with the Ship trait and flip it facedown

I think these two should work how I intend where I pick to use R2D2 first and if I have to flip a damage card over with a ship trait I can then use R5 during the same end phase and flip it facedown again.

I was wondering if I put determination on the pilot also if I could use R2D2 and if I have to flip a card over if it was the pilot ability if I could discard that card.

Determination : When you are dealt a faceup Damage card with the Pilot trait, discard it immediately without resolving its effect .

If I have done my research correctly then I don't believe it works that way since the card is past the DEALT phase of that damage card. Correct?

R5 Astromech resolves before R2-D2 crew.

"At the end of the End phase" happens after "During the End phase".

Your thoughts on Determination are correct. If you are dealt a face down damage card, and it is flipped face up later (R2-D2, Saboteur, Rexler Brath) Determination is never triggered, and does not allow you to discard it. Same goes for Chewbacca (both pilot and crew).

I concur.

The "at the end of the end phase" means it will happen after the "during the end phase" activity. Now while it doesn't let you maybe flip a card with R2D2 and then flip it back over with R5 if still face-up at the end of the next end phase you may be able to turn it face-down then. Of course it would need to be a ship card and it would need to be a card that doesn't do something and then flip itself which is where R2D2 crew could really suck; just imagine flipping Major Explosion every round!

As already noted a flipped card is not a newly drawn or assigned card so it misses a number of triggers.

Interesting. I didn't read it like that at all. i just read them has both in the end phase.

There was a thread running on the main page a while ago ( so it's probably well buried by now ) that had a breakdown of the round and where every pilot or ability with timing triggers, actually triggered. It's worth searching for, but i can't remember what the thread title was.
