One Shot Cannons & Turrets

By warrasmus, in X-Wing

I Know some would say the reason the turret and the cannon upgrade icon is on the new scavenger Crane is because of big bad Boba. They might be right. But I could not help think about a one shot only cards in the future. like a hot shot blaster for the turret slot… Or a heavy laser ion blast( like the b-wing photo in rebels) for the cannon slot.

Many ideas?

I had the same thought when I saw the new scavenger crane. Funny thing is, FFG has done this before (not to say that they WILL do this again) with this little beauty:

What was even more interesting , is that this came out before Scum & Villainy was announced.

I've often wished for some kind of turret upgrade for missiles and/or torpedoes. Granted this would devalue Nera Dantels ability, but perhaps there could be some sort of work-a-round. Anyways, good observation!

Anyway, I had thought of the idea that, if we ever get an ugly, specifically the Y-TIE, we could get a L-s1 turret that would have a dice roll to decide whether or not it would discard or not.

??? Could you clarify?

Sure thing ^_^ (sorry I didn't make myself understood very well).

I just like the idea of having a 360 degree firing ability (like a turret) but with missiles or torpedoes. So instead of firing lasers, it fires ordnance. And the very nature of ordnance is a "one shot item" (with a few exceptions, Epic ships for one) so I thought this might be fun. Hope that makes sense.

In terms of SPA, the key point here is that SPA isn't faction-restricted - but at the time it was published, the Cloak action was only available to the TIE Phantom, so the lack of a faction restriction could only have been because they intended to leave the option open to put the CLoak action into other factions as well.

This is my best guess for the reason behind making the crane work on turrets and cannons - we're going to see one-shot turrets and cannons at some point.

And... presumably another Scum ship with Turret and Illicit, because otherwise the Turret option is basically irrelevant since there's not a single ship that can take both at the moment...

HWK-290?

Oh derp yeah. I always forget those exist.

At the moment you still have Boba Fett (or old damage deck), where you can loose a turret

It is either just future proofing, or in playtests Boba was more of an issue than in the wild. Or both.

What's this "old damage deck" you speak of? Is that a bit like the mystical "Episode I" that I keep hearing about, a thing that doesn't actually exists and is merely a story to scare the little children?

Or us adults too? :D

They already exist. They're called missiles and torpedoes.

The old damage deck is the one you use when flying generic pilots, such as swarms. A bunch of the Crits have no effect on those builds.

Because Boba mainly...

but i bet the wording is just best to have exactly which upgrades can be be 'yoinked'. Instead of saying "any upgrade except Elite, Crew, Etc..." just to avoid confusion and the eventual clarification in a future FAQ.

Likewise in the new damage deck.

Blinded Pilot is kinda useless on feedback arrays or emp devices.

A Lambda doesn't care about a damaged engine, and Hera actually benefits from it.

Hera also doesn't give a hoot about structural damage, nor does the Decimator

Uuh this gives me an idea: How about a dual upgrade cannon that has a powerfull attack on one side, but needs to be flipped after attacking. Then the other side would have an action to flip it again.

Heavy Proton Cannon (ready to fire)

5 Attack Dice

Range 1

Attack (target lock): you may turn 3 of your blank results to <eye>. Then turn this card over.

Heavy Proton Cannon (cooldown)

0 Attack Dice

Range 1

Attack: turn this card over.

6 points

Or would that be too much of a IG88-B/Gunner autoinclude?

Add "You may not attack again this turn." before the "Flip this card" bit on the Ready to Fire side and you'll prevent any Gunner or double-tap interactions.

And just to be sure, on the Cooldown side you could have:

"Attack: If you have performed no other attacks this round, you may perform this attack. You may not add or modify dice. You may not attack again this turn. Then flip this card."

Or something along those lines

Heavy Proton Cannon (cooldown)

Next time you activate during the Attack phase, you may flip this card over instead of performing any attacks.

I don't see any reason why you would need to keep range 1 on a target just to cool down the cannon.

I made it an attack because I personally don't think it'd be too much if a Gunner or IG would enable you to fire that thing every round. :P

For completeness: new blinded pilot blocks Feedback Array and EMP Device from working.

No, no it doesn't. From the FAQ:

Using Feedback Array does not count as an attack, and can be used against ships you are touching and while you have the Blinded Pilot Damage card assigned to your ship.

Fair enough.

That seems a touch inconsistent, given that new Blinded Pilot doesn't actually offer an opportunity to attack, and Feedback Array can't be used when you're on an asteroid...

Might be worth a poke to the rules team.

It triggers when you have an opportunity to attack, which you don't have with an obstacle.

New BP doesn't take the opportunity to attack away, it just states that you cannot perform an attack, which is a different thing altogether. ;) .
