2 Burnout Slams on Shadow Caster

By Siddhi, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Morning all,

just in case anybody else apart from me was wondering if putting 2 Burnout SLAM upgrades on a Shadow Caster would work? It doesn't!

I sent the question to FFG and just got the following reply from Frank Brooks: "If you perform a SLAM action, you would discard both copies of Burnout SLAM."

Edited by Siddhi

Yup, that's what we expected.

What a BS.

What a BS.

I mean, that's how the cards work, so...

There's no other way for the card to work, because SLAM can never be a free action and giving a permanent SLAM upgrade would be too much.

Yeah, the card doesn't say, "If you perform a SLAM off of THIS card." Just if you perform a SLAM. It would trigger both cards.

There's no other way for the card to work, because SLAM can never be a free action and giving a permanent SLAM upgrade would be too much.

You could trivially write it to only discard one:

"When you perform a SLAM action, discard a Burnout SLAM card."

Done.

Another case of "Do what the card says..." vs "Do what I want the card to say..."

What a BS.

Well i see that its written this way, no problems here. But that ruling is still a BS.

So ruling that the cards work the way you agree they're written is BS?

Permanent SLAM at 1 would be too much, but at 2 they could have made you roll a dice, like the Cloaking Device illicit.

The question wasn't if the card should grant a permanent SLAM action but if it would be possible two equip 2 Burnout SLAMs and then use one after the other, which would just mean 2 rounds of SLAM.

You don't get my point: i agree card is written that way as RAW goes. But we had (heh if only once) cards that were written one way then interpreted by FFG other way (looking at you Crackshot). Ruling that we had to discard 2 of them at the same time is stupid for me, correct by the rules true, but stupid - its not some game breaking option after all.

I was kind of replaying to Dagonet saying a permanent SLAM would be too much.

You can get permanent Barel Roll for 2 so permanent SLAM shouldn't cost that much or be so game breaking.

I think the burnout is more flavor then anything else.

Looking at you Crackshot

Nope, they added text to crackshot, they did not leave it as is and decided it was doing something else then the text.

And even without the added text, Crackshot would still work in the compare result step, because in the rules, cancel is not a modification. Cancel happen during the compare result step when evade cancel Hit then Crit.

They could errata Burnout SLAM to make it work two times with two cards.

All the Bomb cards use the same basic wording of "...discard this card to drop 1..." so should we discard both Bomb cards to drop a single Proton Bomb?

Which Burnout SLAM *doesn't* use. It is not worded the same as any other upgrade.

Burnout SLAM adds an action to your bar, then tells you to discard itself (removing the action from your bar) when you use the action on your bar. ALL copies of Burnout SLAM respond to that trigger. Not just one.

Other upgrades you trigger by doing a thing (spending an action, revealing a manoeuvre) and during the course of that, the upgrade tells you to discard itself.

Burnout SLAM doesn't do that.

See this note upthread for how it could have been written to work similarly to other upgrades.

Thanks for the post! I was building a ShadowCaster with dual Burnout SLAM... Tis a shame that it doesn't work.

It should really be able to have 2 turns to SLAM, it's not like the shadowcaster would get a lot of advantage from it. You cannot carry bombs on the ship and you have to give up your action or your modification, and since you used up the illicit slots you cannot carry any cargo token. It would be really good and interesting for escaping swarms and perhaps distributing stress but that's about it, no attacks for you that round and in that expensive ship it doesn't break the game in any possible way.

Shame... back to the "drawing board" then...
