Would HOTR chewbacca with 4 bandits be any good?
HOTR Chewbacca
Played against this list on vassal with a 'fun' list. I was able to use roids and flying to separate Chewie from the Z's and take the list apart without Chewie ever having range as the Z's died one by one. Lost Corran to a well timed lucky shot from my opponent.
Looks neat on paper... did not seem to work well in 100pt game.

Just for kicks give new Chewie the scavenger crane and some homing missiles. They kill a Z and you get to attack and flip your missiles back up. Not competitive but probably fun.
Ive yet to try it but i view it as "ignore the Z's, kill the wookie" every time. Not hard at all to track down a large base surrounded by smalls. You have literally no reason to fire at the Z's and not the wookie.
Completely unrealistic by any competitive metric. Z-95s are bad enough as-is, but now you want to take them with the sole intent for them to die? Why are you taking a list whose effectiveness relies on the majority of it not being alive by the end?
What's stopping me from just shooting Chewbacca? Ok, cool, Chewies dead, now i've got the easiest to kill targets in the game as all thats left to fight against.
It's just an awful, awful list. HOTR Chewie is incredibly thematic and also incredibly worthless.
just noticing he could totally go by Hotbacca
If a list has more than 3 ships, it is not competitive. Just check recent regionals and worlds results.
(4x TLT Y-wings is the one exception)
Even if you just ran HOTRBacca with 1-2 other ships, he'd go down first. Hes expensive enough where nothing you bring with him actually has a heavier threat than he does and doesnt leave an odd point gap. Corran Horn is probably the #1 pairing that would get shot at before chewie, but even then...meh. Also corran has a habit of dying on the sidelines, alone.
The only reason I can see to bring Newbacca is to equip "Resistance Only" upgrades.

Paul Heaver might disagree.

Might want to play X-Wing a bit more there, bud. Z-95's aren't bad at all. They are wonderful blockers and many champion lists run at least one of them in them.
I ran HoTR Chewie w/Airen Cracken + Swarm Tactics, and 2x Bandit Squadron Pilots. Cracken gives your opponent something other than Chewie to shoot at, and if they don't you get an extra PS8 attack from either Chewie or a Bandit.

P.H. flew a 3 ship list at worlds.
Asajj Ventress and 2x TLT Y-wing
P.H. flew a 2 ship list at a recent regional.
Lists from worlds last year are entirely non-competitive. (except Han + Jake somehow, another 2-ship build)

But are they really? I was under the impression that lists like Heaver's 2015 squad weren't present not because they would be uncompetitve in the meta that was actually at World's but because they got wrecked by a triple U-Boat alha strike. The Deadeye errata came too close to World's for people to completely change what they had been planning to play.

In the three Worlds that Paul won he flew 4 ship lists. Granted, as new waves arrive builds will change to reflect the new ships, pilots and upgrades that are available and there's nothing to indicate that a 3+ ship list won't be viable again.
If you believe the conspiracy theorists, FFG is doing this to shorten the game. (2 ship lists)
I suggest to a lot of players, to watch again the Solo+3 Tala Heaver's list..

Yeah they are completely non-competitive.
Many players knew about the Deadeye nerf for months ahead of the announcement, if there had been an edge in bringing the old stuff back then they would have used it.
Edited by Stay On The LeaderOk, so my two cents on HotR-Chewie, or ChewHottie as I will call him from now on. The first point is:
- I don't believe he sucks at all.
I believe that the problem lies in that people are playing the wrong wingmen with him. More specifically, the problem lies in the threat level that the wingmen poses. If they pose no real threat there is never any real reason not to go for ChewHottie first and just tear him down, leaving the opponent with a bunch of weak ships.
So you have to force the opponent into equally bad choices, either they go for ChewHottie at the risk of exposing themselves to the threat posed by his wingmen. Or they go for the wingmen and risk suffer the rage of ChewHottie. My current solution is roughly the following:
ChewHottie (50 points)
- Predator
- Recon specialist
- Jan Ors
2 x Green squadron pilots (2 x 25 points)
- A-wing test pilot
- Deadeye
- Crack shot
- Concussion missile
- Guidance chips
If my opponent ignores the A-wings he sets himself up for two attacks that will cause a lot of pain. Equally, if he ignores ChewHottie he will suffer his rage as he takes down the A-wings. This is still rather theoretical, but I believe ChewHottie can work with the right wingmen around.
Edited by LyynarkZ´s are useful. I won one month ago a shop tournament with Torkix + 6 Z´s. Last match was against a dengar + Asaaj List and y Totally crushed it. Other round was against 2 VCX list, I won losing only 2 zs

Well, we are currently talking about rebel Z-95s which are in a quite worse spot than their scum counterparts. Additionally, anecdotes doesn't really prove anything.
Worst pilot since Fels Wrath. Such a waste.
Z-95's have only won worlds twice guys. They are complete garbage. Nevermind someone just got 2nd at a regional with bbbxz, that's anecdotal.

Quite the difference between having a swarm of Z-95s with no real opportunity for action economy and/or damage and having a single one to fulfill the role as filler and blocker.
I never said that the Z-95 is garbage, but it doesn't require an engineering degree to see that they are in a generally bad spot.
You don't have to "exhaust" Chewbaccas ability and put Z95 into your squad. Just use 2 better ships instead of 4 fillers.
Again though, old chewie would be better for a 2ship list.
The ability to not suffer crits is massive. He can be a real prick because hes not afraid of bad luck, unlike the 2nd ship. Whenever i use him in a list i have antipursuit lasers on there and im constantly getting in the way. You'd be surprised how effective that is, and now that i can put an illicit on him i want Feedback Array on there too.
Newchewie has an ability that screams "I AM THE MAIN SHIP!" but he cant be evasive enough to stay alive or strong enough on his own to actually be the main ship. HOTRBacca will be focused first every single time, the exception maybe being Corran.
