Why Is Scavenger Crane Discard?

By Firespray-32, in X-Wing

It's some rigged up cobbled together piece of equipment that's as likely to fall apart as work correctly. It's not like Scum has access to fully equipped drydocks and shipyards. Some guy probably just welded this thing onto his ship.

I'm not so sure every scum ship is a piece of junk that was coppled together in a back alley, the Black Sun surely have either their own mechanics and workshops or the money to buy good stuff and famous bounty hunters surely have the cash to buy stuff that doesn't break down if you just slightly look at it.

My guess: A guaranteed single use discard was deemed too expensive at two points but probably too cheap at one point.

I think it works like this:

1) At some point in the game let's say you have a discarded/flipped face down torpedo, missile, bomb, cannon, or turret. You may have fired it off two turns ago, or maybe someone played Boba Fett crew and discarded your precious Heavy Laser Cannon. That card is sitting on your end of the table, face down.

2) Any time later or number of turns after said card was discarded, any ship (enemy or friendly!) is destroyed within range 1-2 of your ship that has a) the Scavenger Crane upgrade, and b) a discarded torpedo, missile, bomb, cannon, or turret. You don't even have to be the one that blew it up! It could have hit an asteroid and blew up!

3) You flip the card (previously discarded torpedo, missile, bomb, cannon, or turret) faceup and it's active again.

4) But oh noes! In your hastiness you may have ripped the Scavenger Crane off your ship! Roll a red die, if it comes up blank you lose your Scavenger Crane. If not then you keep it and can use it over again on another turn.

I think the ShadowCaster (two Illicits) + Rigged Cargo shoot is the reason. Otherwise you could conceivably litter the board with 3-4 debris fields.

Or just keep getting Glitterstim.

Scavenging ships in the middle of a firefight is also pretty risky/dangerous, so I see it also being a little bit of "We've got incoming shots! Break away from the other ship!" "But Captain, we'll lose the crane arm!" "I gave you an order! We're sitting ducks here and if we don't take evasive maneuvers immediately, then our goose is cooked."

Scavenger Crane doesn't work for Illicits.

Just so I understand, 1. it's any ship at range 1-2 that needs to die; and 2. you don't need to be the one to kill it?

Good point. :P

Theme is so strong in the Scum faction!

Dont think the chance for discard is much of a problem, it costs the same as extra munitions and works for a much wider upgrade pool.

And this if definitely going on my emon andrasta build

They had to consider things like Dengar having a torpedo for every enemy ship. That would be bad.

Hello, my name is Eyegor and I like RNG mechanics

As a Skaven player... I like Win Big / Lose Big mechanics.... Over the course of a game they generally even out, and you just have to fly on the seat of your pants... Like a proper rat, rather than rest on your laurels like some filthy Rebel.

Or maybe they could use the crane to tow the space-shark into position so x-wing can jump it.

Because that thing is a nearly ExtraMunition for every one who don't have a Torpedo Slot.

And now, you can regen Countermeasures on Dengar. That's amazing.

I'm confused why you have an issue with it operating this way Blue Five. How does it harm you if it isn't discarded on use and isn't guaranteed to last the length of the game? If it bothers you that much, can't you just treat it as a discard after use? With the amount of opportunities it will have to trigger, might be best for everyone to view it that way anyways.

It strikes me as a frustrating mechanic without due cause.

Then make it discard normally, surely?

There's likely a reason why they decided random discard better than non-discard or normal discard, I just don't understand it.

I partially think that (for thematic reasons) you're using the crane through ship debris, at any moment, a piece of the ship could come flying by and smash your crane and boom, no more scavenging

I think the most likely reason is that they though that it wasn't quite good enough at two points if it was a one shot and was too good at 1 point.

Making it not discard at all made way too good for 2 points on ships like Dengar with Countermeasures or Torpedoes. To price it right for those edge cases would make it too expensive an option to consider putting on something like a Z-95 or Khiraxz.

Because some people like RNGs?

I know I do. It´d be boring if there were only black or white effects. I like shades of grey...

The discard mechanic is not the sole thing that distinguishes it from Extra Munitions. It's an illicit, it only triggers on kills, it undiscards cards rather than prevents them from being discarded, it affects only one upgrade but has a far broader range of upgrades it can effect.

So what the rest of the illicits? The game is full of tradeoffs.

I mean, if your favourite X-wing pilot is Jek Porkins and your favourite astromechs are R5-K6 and R5-D6 then sure, I'd see why you like this. I see those ships and cards as crippled by those mechanics.

Gonna need one of these on the back of your QuadJumper [or whichever ship you choose to use it on] ;) :
