Georgia Regionals

By GiledPallaeon, in Star Wars: Armada

Sound off if you're coming to the Georgia Regional tournament Dec. 3! I'm planning to, with the other player I know here at Georgia Tech with me. (If you play Armada at Georgia Tech, I'd love to hear from you too!)

Note for those attending, I've checked in with the host, Giga-Bites Cafe (good God that's a bad pun), and you can either pre-register over the phone or PayPal for $20, or pay at the door for $25.

Defending Champ reporting in! (who knows may never get to say that again!) :)

Defending middle of the pack player reporting in

I'll be there but I haven't played more than a few games since taking second to CN last time :)

Still bummed the Carolina guys have their regional on the same day I had grand plans to attend both this year :(

I'm planning on it … just gotta come up with a plan.

Noticed that too. Poor planning unfortunately. I believe the same two stores did the same thing for Imperial Assault this year as well. Maybe not though

I'm already signed up and ready to get crazy with a new list!

Yeah we are equally bummed. We totally would've made the trip down to GA.

Man, they did that to us with an X-wing regionals last year: X-wing and Armada had regionals on the same day, one in San Antonio and one in Austin (~1hr away). Both stores requested date changes, but were denied. Each event lost out on a few players because of it.

They really could use some improvement in the deconfliction department over there... :/

I would think (and I'm totally speculating) that they have the regionals for stores within a certain proximity on the same day to discourage one person, or more importantly, a group of people from dominating a set of regionals. I can't say I've seen it in this community but I've heard of it going on in XW. Basically, you have a "crew" show up to one regional, there is a player among them favored so some of the others might loose critical games. Next weekend, at the next regionals, someone else is "the chosen one" and so on until there are 4-5 of them going to nationals or they have "bragging rights". I know this is collusion and strictly forbidden but you'd be hard-pressed to prove it to FFG for any sort of action to be taken. Again, I haven't seen it in Armada players and have only had suspiscions at XW tourneys. But then maybe I'm too paranoid. How paranoid is too paranoid?

Wouldn't surprise me from what I've seen. The X-Wing players vs. Armada players divide in many ways reminds me of Warhammer's old 40k vs Fantasy divide. 40k has been win at all costs for a long time. Fantasy players, by the end, were a bit more chill, a bit more accommodating, and more likely to stick to "theme." That's not to say we're the perfect community. After all, I'm sure we have our share of win at all costs people, and we just had a thread about the freakin' Arquitens degenerate into a religious debate. However, it just takes one pop over to the X-Wing forum to know the Armada community is where I belong.

Eh, maybe. I think the stores provide a set of dates for FFG to choose from, but I could be wrong. And I also think it is much harder in this game to guarantee domination, as matchups are such a huge factor, and even really skilled players in Armada are still prone to losing a match, no matter how good at the game you are.

I hope Caldias is right on this, and wonder if the compressed Regional/National/World schedule has something to do with it as well this year. I don't like the idea of a group of players basically colluding to dominate any level of OP, but I'm sure it happens.

I also /really/ like the comment about how even really skilled Armada players are prone to losing a match, because my excuse for December 3rd is all set! Now I can say "Well, according to Caldias, I'm actually really skilled even though I just went 0 - 4." :)

Hey, I like to think I'm no slouch, and I lost every single game in GA regional last year. Twice involving an ISD 1 card away from tabling my opponent. I hate you, Motti. And you came in 2nd in that one, I believe!

For the Most Part:

1) FFG had direct wording on Regionals this year. This included at the very least, the Canadian ones, which should have been the purview of Lion Rampant, their distributor.

2) FFG's word came down from on high. The Sentry Box was told a date. Not given a date range. Use it or Lose it.

3) The assumption is that the short time frame and all is the biggest factor on it... FFG OP Kits normally have a six month order-turnaround... And this one was much, much shorter than that. It makes sense things were done quickly.

4) Store Championships gives any store in Good Standing a chance to do the big tournament, and at the same time, it forms a feedback basis on who should be looking for Regionals... So let FFG know when you have a good Store Champs through their Event Feedback report.

Via the transitive property, we are all excellent players. Anyone who has beaten JJ is now a world champ level player, and any who have beaten them are also on the same level.

I don't think there is collusion going on in Armada because each game is a huge investment. Why throw a game when you spend 2 hours in it, likely waiting for your opponent to make a move? Also, prize support is easier to get in Armada because there are less players which means you can rank higher to get what you want.

I think this game also involves more mental processing power, so you don't get raging lunatics that you can get in other "netlisting" type of games like MTG (I've met many people who have no idea what they are doing yet still play well because they look how the deck is used). This cuts out a large chunk of people who are the "sore/angry losers" because they can understand why they lost. And come on, we all have met those type of people so you know what I am talking about. If not, go play monopoly with your friends and family for 4 hours, or better yet, go play any FPS game. I remember much salt from Star Wars BF players.

Yeah, this is what happened to our stores last year, according to the store owners.

When stores apply they give some possible dates on their application. FFGOP then tells them what date they will hold it on.

Yep. Even if you give all dates as Sundays, they'll mandate a Saturday, too - citing that its to stop conflict, when, in particular, it created it.

It's not the responsibility of the local stores to only offer non-overlapping dates--their responsibility is to offer as many available dates as possible to make OP's deconfliction as easy as possible.

Indeed, what other function does OP serve in the scheduling process if not to deconflict dates?

Not raging or anything, and it's not like it's a huge deal. Just kind of... Seems like the issue should be avoidable.

Ok, so I'm all excited about tomorrow. Anyone need any upgrade cards for their build or anything? I'm planning on bringing my binder, so I'll have extras to loan if people need them. Also so I can change my mind about what I want to fly 12 times between 9:50am and 10:00am. This is going to be a disaster for me, I can't figure out a decent build at all, but I'm psyched to play some Armada again!
