First Store Tournament (Summer Kit)

By Tom1132, in X-Wing

Hello all,

First of all, the elephant in the room; yes, I was planning on a tournament before and made a post about it. But the travel arrangements fell through and I didn't get to go unfortunately :/

But my travel is organized and I'm ready to go this weekend!

Now, this is a different list from before. One that I'm hoping will be forgiving and fun to fly for a player new to the tournament scene. Here we go.
(C-3PO and Gunner are promo cards, but I am assuming they are okay to use in a tournament since they're often prizes at tournaments)

The idea behind the list:

- Up both of their Pilot Skill levels to ensure initiative in almost every matchup
- Han shoots first most of the time, but his ability coupled with Gunner should ensure that damage pushes through
- C-3PO coupled with an evade when faced with trouble I am unable to Boost out of
- Autothrusters on Poe to minimize long range damage
- Poe hangs onto his focus anyway, so I thought if he is closer than range 3 and comes up blank on the green dice, Sensor Cluster could bail him out
- R2-D2 hopefully regens any excess hits with a green move

Han Solo (46)
Veteran Instincts (1)
C-3PO (3)
Gunner (5)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Millennium Falcon (1)
Poe Dameron (31)
Veteran Instincts (1)
R2-D2 (4)
Sensor Cluster (2)
Autothrusters (2)
Total: 100

Now, my MAIN query about this list is this; would it be better to drop Sensor Cluster on Poe to upgrade Gunner to Luke Skywalker? My Han won't have a focus token most of the time so the ability to change 1 focus result to a hit seems like it could really be beneficial in this case.
I've played this list a few times and haven't lost yet, but I'm not sure if it was down to my flying or the general 'tank-y-ness' that is Han and Poe. I've been practising using the X-Wing Benchmark, just to get used to the synergies - but any advice on setup (Turn 0) and general flying of this this list would be great. As well as any general 'first tournament' advice!

No, Sensor Cluster on Poe is a lot better than what you get from Luke, he really just is a point sink if you can't find something else. It makes Poe incredibly tanky by almost guaranteeing 3 mitigated damage (Sensor Cluster, Focus/ATs, shield regen). Being able to entirely outtank a Defender one on one while being more expensive can win you games easily on time.

What Admiral Deathrain said. Do the math and keep in mind what an average roll looks like for Han and develop some decision rules for using his ability (so you don't have to sweat it). Also, I made the mistake recently of over-boosting with Rey. Han has a lot more leeway to boost, but consider the utility of other actions first (including focus). Just my 2 cents.

Overall looks like a good build. Just remember to have fun and see the tournament for what it is: an opportunity to play a bunch of X-wing!

This is a decent squad but an older one. I'm not sure it will have the damage output for taking down some of the tanked up pilots we see now or the damage mitigation on the other side to withstand much punishment. I would suggest Rey/Poe as a better option - you have more damage output and more damage mitigation.

Gotcha. It was Defenders specifically that I was concerned about, so I stacked Poe for defence.

Thanks :)

Will do! At the end of the day I'm looking forward to getting a good number of games in, win or lose.

And hey, on the plus side; I think the attendance will be low enough that everyone should get a promo Predator card ;)

I did look at Rey, but unfortunately I don't have Heroes of the Resistance yet :/

It is on the New Year's shopping list though, so she may see play at my *next* tourney!
