Return of the Swarm

By Duk3, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hi Guys! I recently attended a regional tournament and got my butt handed to me while trying out an Interdictor/ISD2 fleet. Just couldn't get any traction with it- while my usual sparring partner won the whole thing with a fleet I've beaten before, with minor tweaks! So I'm looking to revamp my fleet and for feedback from y'all.

I used to run a fun Screed APT build with an ISD1, 2 glads, 2 raiders, and a minimal fighter screen. Now I'm aiming for Space Superiority. Here's what I've got- i know the capital ships don't have a lot of HP, I'm throwing it out here before I settle on anything.

EMPIRE FLEET 388 -
1 • Gladiator I-class Star Destroyer - Gladiator-class Star Destroyer (56) - Ordnance Experts (4) - Engine Techs (8) - Expanded Launchers (13) - Demolisher (10)
• Total : 91
2 • Raider I-class corvette - Raider class corvette (44) - Admiral Montferrat (5) - Ordnance Experts (4) - Expanded Launchers (13)
• Total : 66
3 • Raider I-class corvette - Raider class corvette (44) - Ordnance Experts (4) - Expanded Launchers (13)
• Total : 61
4 • Gozanti-class Cruisers - Gozanti (23) - Admiral Screed (26) - Admiral Titus (2)
• Total : 51
5 • Gozanti-class Cruisers - Gozanti (23)
• Total : 23
6 • ''Howlrunner'' TIE Fighter Squadron - TIE Fighter (16)
• Total : 16
7 • ''Mauler'' Mithel TIE Fighter Squadron - TIE Fighter (15)
• Total : 15
8 • TIE Advanced Squadron - TIE Advanced (12)
• Total : 12
9 • TIE Advanced Squadron - TIE Advanced (12)
• Total : 12
10 • Dengar Punishing One - JumpMaster 5000 (20)
• Total : 20
11 • IG-88 IG-2000 - Aggressor Assault Fighter (21)
• Total : 21
The squadrons can enforce space superiority- IG88 in particular can wipe out enemy intel, allowing the others to tie them down.
Some modifications I'm considering- drop the raiders to more 'zantis for a Rhymerball, replace the Demo and drop a Raider for an ISD1, etc.
Thoughts?

It's a solid enough fleet, especially against today's BCC trend.

The only think I would question is Howlrunner... are the points worth it with so few others with SWARM? It's your call, but I would look into dropping her to a normal TIE and upgrading an Advanced to Vader. Or just switching her out for another Aggressor ... or a 5000 for the intel + points (in this case I would downgrade Dengar into 2 normals and take a TIE normal)... depend on how you want to play the squadrons. Maybe even just swap her for Rhymer so you can easily threaten ships with your non-ship killers in case they didn't bring squadrons?

At a glance - I see 5 activations - but all of them small, squishy ships. In today's meta, it seems that you need at least 6 if you are going to try to swarm. I'd think 7 would be even cooler. This might be much easier to accomplish once the Arquitens comes out though.

Consider downgrading your squadrons to regular TIEs and you might be able to toss in another raider.

And all those expanded launchers - I can't help but feel they are a potential huge waste. I would think of using them if you had a fleet designed to slow down your opponent's ships, like with Interdictors or phylons, or Konstantine... but without that sort of thing and only 5 activations I don't know how many times you'll even get those range 1 shots.

So consider this significant changeup to your list.

2 Glad 1's, each with assault proton torpedo - (1 with demolisher)

2 Raider 1's, each with assault proton torpedo

3 Gozanti cruisers (1 carrying vader)

8 TIE Fighter Squadrons

Comes in at 399 points. Vader replaces your need for rerolling with ordnance experts, and also allows the red and blue dice to be rerolled. You end up having a great chance to get those crits through this way - albeit not a sure thing from Screed, but still a pretty darn good chance, and can use it more than once an activation, unlike screed.

By downgrading the upgrades on the ships too, you also get more squadrons, (8) and more ships (7), so you will have a tremendous deployment advantage, and probably a very good activation advantage. It's not much of an initiative bid, but if you manage to go first you'll probably be able to totally wreck faces with demolisher.

Actually now I want to fly this.

@SirDave, good point on Howl- she's not seeing a whole lot of use here.

@Crabbok, sounds like an interesting modification for the fleet. My experience with stock TIEs is that they tend to all die horrible deaths- I think the extra points for scatter tend to be worth it. I love APTs maybe more than life itself- the problem I've faced with them is that you end up with enemy ships that have 2 or 3 crits stacked on them... but shields and dead raiders. I like the Expanded Ord because it's, quite simply, moar dakka.

The Vader v. ordnance experts question is a perennial issue for any imperial. I tend to like Screed much more than Vader _because_ ordnance experts exist- Vader costs as much more than Screed (10 pts) as 2 more ordnance experts, and Screed _with_ OE gives you the certain crits for APTs along with the likely extra damage from OE. That said, it's always annoying to have black dice ships with useless evades- Vader lets you use them for rerolls in the heat of combat.

Let me try some changes- I like that swarm you suggested, @Crabbok, but I think it relies too heavily on stock TIEs.

With your given squad screen, drop Howlrunner and grab Fel. 3 more points to get much more utility. Keep him near the advanced
