Dorsal Turret--how good is it anyway?

I've got a reasonable amount of use out of it, particularly on Torkil and Palob where it pairs nicely with the range of their abilities.

I've always liked TLT with the range of their abilities. Range 2 is the sweet spot where the ability kicks in and you can still attack and in either of the other range bands you'll get one or the other. If your opponent can stay at range 3 then Palob and Mux aren't doing anything if they brought one of the other turrets.

But I do not see that turret being useful with Scums.

Kavil though...

A 3 Attack range 2 and 4 attack Range 1 turret is nothing to sneeze at especially for just 3 points!

Dorsal to me has always been a budget turret. Its cheap, and pretty much only deters people from wanting to get right up on your butt because its 360 3die attack at that range.

But even Ion Turrets outshine it to me. Dorsal may do more damage since it doesnt cancel all dice, but the ion effect lets you just keep hammering that ship and if they dont have their own turret you can usually avoid getting fired back at.

Generally if i have a turret i take TLT or Ions, but if im stressed for points i'll drop to Dorsals.

Though i should say 4 Y's with VTs and Dorsals is funny lol. Basically turns them into a form of arcdodger, since the barrelroll REALLY throws people off.

But I do not see that turret being useful with Scums.

Kavil though...

I use the dorsal turret on my VCX-100 almost always for no good reason other than theme. And I can't get the "pew-pew" sounds that it makes from the show out of my head whenever I play with the Ghost.

Dorsal turret is good for its low cost. Other turrets are certainly more consistent in damage or useful, but cost more. Dorsal turret also gets to shoot at range 1-3, so you aren't limited in that regard. Use the it for pot shots if you can't get the enemy ship in arc or you get the free shot off with the Phantom docked, but never count on it to be a significant damage outputer.

The argument about Dorsal vs ABT also has a caveat. ABT will do more damage against agile ships, but Dorsal will be more effective against low-agility targets.

I don't really like it - with the exception of Kavil. It's well below TLT and Ion, and if I'm looking for a cheap turret, I'll go for Autoblaster normally - it scares the hell out of a lot of good ships.

Maybe I undervalue Autoblaster Turret? When I saw the turret released I thought it was just a joke.

Palob with Predator, Dorsal Turret and Zuckuss has been a pain for my opponents, and a nice distraction from the more dangerous elements of my list in the past. :) It's not a top-tier upgrade, but definitely fills a useful role in the game.

Ah, another Palob build I should try! There's so many things that guy can do... Cloaking Device on a cheap one to maintain his ability, and your build is a nice one that's cheap but punishing, and mine was 40 points but very powerful.

To be fair, Dorsal is range 1-2 only. I don't own a Ghost (bought the turret by itself) but I imagine it has some utility on that craft. :)

He, he, he :lol:! Sigh...I had to laugh at this one, I SO know what you mean! Thanks for making me not feel like I'm crazy when I can hear the "pew-pew" sounds as well.

When I have games with my six year old son, I make ship thrust noises when I move it ahead with the moving template (he loves ;) this).

I think you might do. Unblockable hits are *amazing* against high dodge aces, and an ABT makes your range 1 a complete no-go for the likes of inquisitor and Soontir which hugely limits their movement.
