Why would you assume there'd be backtracking? The order of the cars is random, so if you've got, say, a Dining Car that requires you to do something in the Sleeper Car to proceed, you could easily get an unwinnable setup.

The don't need to use the title of the card, they could use the traits, and make you backtrack that way. Or there could be a card that spawns at the back of the train that you have to go get. An example would be "the first Agenda could need clues, but once its flipped it makes you go to the back of the train because you have to retrieve something". Plenty of ways to force you to backtrack
Backtracking defeats the entire theme of the scenario

That's quite a claim to make when all we really know is "They're trying to get to the engine car". There could be plenty of reasons for backtracking, and it would be nice if the investigators could start spreading out in this chain of locations rather than all sitting in the same place, waiting to complete a single car before moving on. Get to a locked door, the key was on the guy three cars back being dragged away by some tentacled monster. Send two investigators while the other two hold down the fort trying to kill all the enemies that are rushing towards that door. Hmmm, for all we know each car could be two location cards: The interior and exterior/roof. That could be cool, and maybe we'll have to go up to get around a locked room only to head back to open it later.

this is what i was thinking, although we have seen the reverse of some of the locations, so we know that each car is just a seperate location, that said, the locations do say "this car is connected to the left and right of it", so if you didn't need to go back the other way, for one reason or another, i would find that point moot, as well as we all know, moving to an empty location to prepare for an attack against enemies.
one thing i noticed on the dining car, it appears one of the enemies in the set is a "grappling" enemy. undead enemies?
this really seems like a nod to a future expansion as well, for an orient express release, that might have it's own campaign. maybe test out an idea here, and deliver later with a big box expansion.
i'm loving this!
