Alt-Art Cards

By FootNote, in Star Wars: Destiny

Evening,

So a few hours ago I got back from the Launch event at my local store. I went there last minute and knew nothing about the game. Left there after buying a box, and 5 boosters with one more free for doing the event. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at how much I like the game. My tabletop background is limited to Star Wars X-Wings so I was a bit surprised how fast the game went. The website says 30 minutes but it seems to me that the game can easily be played in 10-20 minutes.

Now thats all rather pointless to this post outside of talking about X-Wings, if you play that game you know there is a lot of custom Alt-Art cards there. I may be jumping the gun considering launch parties are still going on, but are there any known artists or websites for alt-art cards?

Probably too early for custom alt art cards. FFG did hand out a Rey character card with all the rules text in the Arabesh font. Other than that, I haven't seen anything real.

Seeing more and more alt-cards on youtube. Would love to print them out and play them as proxy to the real ones. So does anyone know where to get a good resolution of those alt-cards?

I would love it if they gave us black cards with just the text and die sides on it. I have been going to conventions for years now and get my blank comic book covers drawn with original art from the artists there. I would love to get me a blank General Grievous card and have Ken Lashley who did some concept art for the character to draw me some grievous.

Also the only alt-art cards that are tournament legal are those which FFG puts out.

I would wonder if I had a custom alt art card made up and I had the real card from FFG that I brought to the tourney with me if I would be allowed to play it. I think if I proved there was nothing changed on the stats or the text just the picture and I had the original readily available I could get away with it.

There are three things that I would like to check against the FFG Card, health, dice table and special rules. So if you had the real card with you and put it someplace convenient for me to see, I would have zero complaints about you using an awesome looking card.

Heck, even the FFG alt-art would need you to display the real card in some cases as very few players can see a card and quote its special rules correctly from memory, with the special rules in Arabish you will always have to play it safe.

This is from page 4 of the tournament regulations guide:

Players may use only official Star Wars : Destiny components in tournament play, with the following exceptions for third-party replacements:

Tokens that do not obscure card information

Determining the legality of any questionable third-party tokens is the marshal’s responsibility. Proxies of cards are not allowed unless used under the rules of Lost and Damaged Components on page 4.

So that pretty much says no to player made cards at any tournament. I expect to know what I'm looking at with a glance during a tournament, these are timed games.

Yeah at tournaments it wouldn't be smart to allow player made cards. That could lead to so much strange stuff and confusion. Image cards made in Windows Paint, Its my kids Luke drawing hehe.

Any way does anyone have images of the alt art cards ? Or are they so limited that they aren't online...

I can see them being allowed in Local if you own the actual cards

Honestly for a casual game if your opponent is okay with it, that's between you.

For a tournament where I'm paying to play and round times can be tight, I expect you to play with the cards that FFG says are legal.

I have less of a problem with Alt-Art cards than I do with unofficial tokens.

With so many different styles and designs among all the various custom tokens it can be easier to obfuscate damage or shields or resources because you're using non-standard tokens.

A non-standard Leia card is going to have Leia's picture so it's still going to look like Leia at a glance. That random token that's supposed to be shield or a damage or a resource? Not so much, sometimes.

Can I use alternate art dice?

I think an important distinction to draw would be alt-art cards that began as official, FFG-produced cards from "alt-art cards" that didn't. Consider the case in which someone takes an existing card and paints over it (but leaves the functional parts of the card unaltered, like name, die sides, costs, and text). This should be treated differently from what would essentially be a proxy: a card that was painted to look like another card, or a new creation entirely that never began as a Star Wars Destiny card.

As far as I understand it, the tournament rules are in place to prohibit the latter, since the former are actually official FFG products that happen to have additional paint on them.

Not that FFG needs to mimic WotC's choices, but this is how it's handled for Magic: the Gathering.

The issue with the promo cards that FFG has made for Destiny is that (for some of them) the text is in Aurebesh, including the description of the special action on the die.

They look pretty rad, but I don't know how practical it is to have cards out there that can't easily be read by most of the players. I suppose that anyone playing Kylo needs the starter package anyway (the promo is just the card not the relevant die) so they could use the normal card as a reference. But that's a different scenario compared to AA cards in X-Wing and Imperial Assault. The cards just have alternate art, not alternate text (with exceptions for AA cards that have errata on them, but that's kind of a different scenario).

Kinda weird.
