Assist maneuver

By blaked, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Togruta gets double the boost dice when performing the assist maneuver. Can I this apply to ranged attacks (assuming my ally is engaged)? Non-combat skill checks? I can spend a maneuver to assist and then also attack myself, correct? Can i assist twice in one round (assuming the normal rules re: two maneuvers in a round)

Thanks much

As far as I know, you cannot perform the assist maneuver on combat checks and you cannot assist yourself.

I would agree you cannot assist yourself. I've not seen any mention that you cannot perform the assist maneuver on combat checks - in fact, I believe it is in the combat chapter, page 201.

Sure. Yup. I might allow 2 Assists but not on the same check.

2 Assists? Yep, but not on the same target character or yourself. So if you have 2 different allies you can assist in one round then go for it.

Assist on combat? Definitely.

Edit: assist on combat could be called "spotting" for ranged, or being a distraction in hand to hand

I never really gave much to thought to performing the assist maneuver during structured play until I played a Togruta. It's a lot of fun.

Or providing covering or suppressive fire while someone else maneuvers to get a better shot.

You have to be engaged with the PC you're assisting, so that does impose some limitation.

IMO, the key to the Assist Maneuever is to narrate how you’re assisting.

If you can do that, I’ll easily give you the two dice.

I'd say you can use Assist anywhere, as long as you can justify it in the narrative, like brad has mentioned.

Keep in mind that a sticking point is that the Togruta get this bonus to unskilled assistance. If they're lending Yellow or Green die to a situation, they can't lend the two Boost.

One of my favorites moves was to run back to back with our sharpshooter in the group and keep shooting and shooting and shooting against groups of minions who surrounded us. Covering for each other, pointing out new targets, etc ^_^

Which works for a sniper and his spotter. The sniper focuses on the target while the spotter keeps an eye on the larger view to redirect the sniper as needed :)

Pilot and co-pilot would be another great pair for skilled assistance. Ironically this is even brought into the game via the droid brains which come fully modified with skills of 4 and characteristics of zero.

By default, they have only two ranks of skill. You have to get (and pay for) upgrades to bring them up to three or even four ranks of skill.

But yes, you can have that. As you can with a Droid gunner brain. Or a Droid astronavigation brain.
