New Objectives!

By Card Knight, in Star Wars: Armada

I think Fighter Ambush might end up on the bottom of the pile next to Fleet Ambush. It puts you at a deployment disadvantage as Second Player right off the bat. Then, if you want to take advantage of the special deployment, you risk being out of command range. Sure, you could bring Rogues, but then you risk taking an alpha strike from commanded squadrons. The objective points themselves equally favor first and second player, so if we both have a lot of squadrons, I am probably going to take this objective. At a minimum I will enjoy a deployment advantage. Best case scenario, I'm alpha striking your unsupported squadrons and then going to town on your ships to rack up the victory tokens.

As a squadron player, this objective is the best of the new ones to come out. Since I use a lot of squadrons (mostly bombers) I typically like going second so I can use my objectives to play the game on my terms. The problem while there are great blue and red objectives (Superior Positions/Precision Strike respectively), there hasn't been a yellow objective that can help a squadron player out. Now that there is, it'll force the first player into picking a squadron based objective which suites a squadron player perfectly.

Against squadron-light players, sure. The problem is when you run into someone running squadron heavy as well. The first player gets just as much of an advantage from the victory tokens AND gets to out deploy your ships.

I have some news for you.... You're color blind.

Since the campaign is designed to be one campaign kit for a group, supplying both teams with their respective squad cards and such, it gave me a thought. Will the campaign box contain 2 copies of each objective card (one for each team) or will it be like the core set and only be one set of these objectives? Thoughts?

One Set.

The box is still going to be "owned" by someone.

Things will be all shared during a campaign playthrough - because campaigns are all about caring and sharing...

..

But to translate this to Tournament Play for Tournament Legality - That will be "One Copy, One Set, One Player."

Yeah that is kind of what I was thinking. Bummer though as it would be nice to not have to buy two kits for two players when the only thing that would have to be duplicated to make one kit work is the objectives.

Fighter fleets start to be greater nightmare to fight

Instead of Contested outpost Fighter Ambush will be added to the Precision Strike and fleet ambush

I really liked what I read. All the objectives look like a lot of fun.

Yep.

Almost like you might want to start either playing their game, or preparing to counter them and aiming for Player 2...

Hope not, also means my maths is out as well as me telling the card symbols apart lol

Very true! I'm lucky that in my local meta, I'm the one who runs squadrons the most. We have a couple of players who don't run any squadrons at all, so I can use the help!

I jizzed at the dust fields

On the subject of Fighter Ambush, I think any potential deployment headaches are mitigated by the fact that if I'm reading it correctly, you get to deploy those after ALL ships and enemy squadrons have deployed. So in exchange for holding ships back, you can position your squadrons however best works for the situation, without penalty. A big Rhymerball or Rogue swarm is going to love this objective no matter how many ships you sacrifice to do it. And Flight Commander mitigates any potential drawback of forward deploying to counteract enemy squadrons.

I guess now if you don't feel like playing with 134 points of squadrons you need to invest heavily in anti-squadron or make a high bid.

Well not just for tournament play. I supply enough for two people to play so I can host games and the sharing objectives method as per the instructions in the core set isn't fun. I know I could proxy them, printing out scans or whatever, but they will never be close enough that you wouldn't be able to recognize the copy from the back, meaning as you are picking objectives you will have to hide them so as not to tip off the opponent as to which cards they could be. Not a big deal, just an irritation, similar to the irritation of FFG never supplying enough dice. Being nitpicky, but I'm sure I can buy extra cards second hand or buy two sets and sell the extra pilot cards.

With new fighters imperial Rhymmerball will be very annoying. Those damned shuttles (hope they will be high points) will relay Orders to Rhymmerball escort. Do you imagine ISD 1 with Chirenau, expanded hangars and token? 6 activations for bomber on the oposite part of the table moving almost like there is no fighter escort on enemy ships (Ofc Intel are better for that but this option give points for Imperial flying circus that will expand greately afthe FightersII will show up)

Wave 5 + CC is madness and I love this game for that.

nevermind the fact that, because of its contents - its priced well enough to be worth it...

Its a third of the price of the Core Set, for one.

Its the second-cheapest of the Price Bands we hve for Armada...

For that, you're getting all of the Squadron Discs, all of the Objectives, all of the new obstacle tokens to use with the new objectives - that part can't be missed - and so on...

For $30US.

Sounds like you check for "Proof of Purchase" squares before every tournament.

No, just an accepted acknowledgement that you can't exactly have 2 people turn up to a Tournament and have them expect to be able to share a Core Set between them, like they do at their local game days... Its perfectly acceptable, and downright encouraged there...

But Tournaments have Rules and Regulations.

I've only ever been an advocate for Law and Order in regards to Rules and Regulations :D

...

I mean, I'll admit. I'm disappointed at how many people still don't understand Most Wanted, even though they're at Regionals, where they're expect to have at least a passing familiarity with the rules and FAQs...

... for anything less than that, sure.

But its part of the Regulations....

I play long-range Imperial, and let me say, solar corona has me both very excited and very scared.

Not necessarily... With those big arcs it could put you at a disadvantage. It promotes a deployment where you start in the corner facing away from the Corona, and force your opponent to come at you, putting their arcs in the corona

That's what I was talking about. I'll almost never take an opponent's, where they have the opportunity to get their backs to the corona, but it will possibly be an include for me from now on.

I mean, technically, after both sides have Deployed.
