Holding the monsters while painting

By DukeOfAnkh, in Mansions of Madness

Normally I would use use mounting putty (Fun-Tak) to attach a mini's base to a camera film roll / prescription bottle so that I could easily handle it while painting. Since the monster minis don't have a built in base how did other people handle this? My intent will be to rebase the on Litko clear bases when they are done being painted.

I still used mounting putty and pill bottles. They weren't a sturdy as usual, but it still worked for most of the figures just having the pegs and the bottom of the feet held.

Something I use for some models when spraying is to have a small electrical crocodile clip on the end of a bamboo barbecue skewer. They fit really well. The clip will grip the nubby on the bottom of the figure and the bamboo makes a good handle which can also be stabbed into a box or something for spraying/priming.

I cut off the big chunky pegs with a sharp blade, then drill holes in two spots in the monsters feet, robes, bodies (crawling ones).

Then I superglue paperclip wires in and stick the mini onto a cork cap with a wooden top, cork side up.

The wood makes a good handle and it's less top heavy as well so it won't fall over.

After I'm done I cut off the wire to a lenght that matches the thickness of the base. Afterwards stick the ends into some paint and touch them to the base itself and drill into the markings.

Bend the wires inwards very slightly and behold - you have less crappy pegs.

Although I do permanently superglue mine after I pin them to the bases.
