Outdoor X-wing

By IG88E, in X-Wing

Ok, winter is coming, but nevertheless I want to prepare a fun tournament for May and want to collect some know how:

Does someone have general experiences for outdoor play? Wind, sunshine, playmats etc. Fun or annoying?

Any other ideas for interesting locations?

Sun wouldnt be an issue to me, even though im pasty white and burn easily lol. Problem would be the tiniest gust of wind on little cards.

Gust of wind rolls up "Oh thats a nice game of Xwing you got there. It'd be a shame if something happened to your cards!"

Wind is going to be the biggest problem. So you'd need to either use printed lists or have some way of stopping the cards from blowing around.

We considered that this summer and had the idea of sheet of clear plastic or acrylic you could put the cards under.

Wind might also, with a little bad luck, move the ships about.

Yes I was thinking of a list instead of cards either. A first verification that you have everything with you, then proxy lists

The whole thing with gamers not going outside exists for a reason although it might help with the smell.

We've played TCGs outside. It can he done weather dependent.

I wouldn't risk it. Almost lost my outrider title card due to wind.

On second thought as long as you printed the list it should be fine.

Actually u still gotta worry about damage cards flying around.

New rules:

"You have to suffer all damage cards accidentally revealed by wind."

I've seen players use 9 pocket binder sleeve sheet things to keep their list all together. That would work well for playing outside. But if you're going to do it, do it like the guy in Anchorage and use 1:72 scale models and play on the grass!

Thin pieces of acrylic can be had from the hardware store as window pane replacement. To keep ships from moving soper glue some fender washers underneath the base. In fact, I have most of my bases weighted with washers. They don't move as far when I bump them.

For the damage cards dealt use a small piece of blue tack (poster putty) and stick them to the acrylic the ship cards are under. The sleeves will protect the cards from any damage that the putty might cause.

Now the only thing to worry about is knocking your beer over and flooding the game mat.

Also bear in mind when and how quickly the sun sets. Although this should be less problematic with X-Wing's 2d terrain than when I played Necromunda in the garden.

Easy,

Option 1: Use printed list from voidstate's squad builder, with the Expand option set to "Hull & Shields". Use a pencil to cross off hull & shield icon when you take damage, only deal out damage cards for Crit effects. The crit cards are the only cards needed, and you can weigh them down with a heavy coin if it's windy.

Option 2: put your pilots and upgrades into a 9 pocket card page, and hope the wind doesn't move the shied tokens or damage cards.

I prefer option 1.

Setup tents in the yard to play in...

My kids have a nice collection of the toy scale ships (okay, I have a nice collection of toy scale ships). I keep meaning to make up some giant movement templates and play X-wing on a 15' by 15' space on the ground outside or in a big room. Haven't quite mustered the enthusiasm to make all the templates but every so often I get the itch to do it...

TIE fighters are literal kites, just a heads up.

wind is a huge issue.

I played on the beach once. =D

Wind might also, with a little bad luck, move the ships about.

Certainly not as much as my fat, clumsy fingers.

I love the idea, but problems will arise.

Definitely print off card lists. Played MTG in the sunshine, once. You could watch the cards curl up in front of you.
