Heroes of the Republic! (Triple ARC)

By Sonikgav, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So i know some will have seen my post re ARC Bomber ideas but ive been tweaking and ive been thinking a little outside the box. One is a little familiar, the others, not so much.

Norra Wexley - Stay on Target, Hera Syndulla, Targeting Astromech, Alliance Overhaul

Thane Kyrell - Extra Munitions, BB-8, Sabine Wren, Cluster Mines, Alliance Overhaul

Braylen Stramm - R3-A2, Tactician, Alliance Overhaul

Norra has the ability to move anywhere around the Speed 2/3 dial and in the event i go for a K-Turn and it can be corrected to a straight if need be. Thanks to this Targeting Astro provides that Target Lock every turn. No Focus but at least the lock helps and really doesnt care about stress at all unless someone has Slicer Tools.

Thane brings something a little different to the ARC, being used as a Bomber, either as his action, or making higher PS guys wary of coming up behind him since he could drop in the Combat Phase too. Lots of Green on the ARC Dial means BB-8 works well and maneuver Bombs would have been fantastic with that if not for his low PS. If i had points id have considered a VI Shara doing that instead but i also think Clusters have more potential against the high agility meta.

Stramm is the standard stress build. Simple as that.

99 points so even a little initiative bid.

Thoughts?

I think that the damage output on Norra will be a little anemic. You're using all her upgrade slots for a gimmick. She'll be squirrelly as hell and doesn't really care about stress but without access to focus tokens she might as well not have a pilot ability. Defensively, having a target lock and focus is more or less an evade token for Norra which can make her 9 hit point last much longer. When you use those tokens offensively, she has the equivalent of a 5 dice attack when attacking at range one in her front arc. It seems a shame to not use that.

Action bombs on Thane is a cool idea and it makes a nice use of his pilot ability.

It seems like Thane is expensive enough that he keeps Norra from being able to take all the toys she needs to be a serious threat.

.

I like Action Bomb Thane. But I'd like him a lot more if he was in a bomb list, maybe with some K-Wings. Sabine gains more value if there are more bombs to put in play. And then I'd like him more with R2-D2 and Vectored Thrusters. With his pilot ability and Sabine on board, he will be the primary target.

I'm not really a fan of your Norra for exactly the reasons spelled out by WWHSD — she really wants to have TL + Focus.

That Braylen is fine, I've run him that way and he works ok. He's probably a better stress mule with Gunner, but you don't have the points, so Tactician it is. If you're good at range control it can still be effective.

Considering dropping Stramm for Kyle with Recon Specialist and Ion Turret.

Replace stress mechanic with Ion and throw Focus to Norra.

Might be the easiest fix.

Every one of the ships in your list is a less effecient than they should be. Norra has nothing to capitalize on her pilot ability. Thane might get two chances to drop mines with his free action, but those chances probably won't line up with ideal placement of the mines. (That being said I think clusters are a good way to try to get more out of Sabine.) Stress Braylen is more consistent with Gunner than Tactician.

This is just fluff, but if you named your squad based on the ARC being a Republic fighter, then you misnamed your squad. None of these pilots flew in the Cline Wars.

I might suggest Hera and Targeting Astromech works well on Shara Bey. You can use your full dial, and pick up a target lock, which might work well with Norra Wexley (at least offensively).

Braylen is okay at handing out stress, but gunner is generally better than tactician because of the range restriction.

Suggested modified version:

  • Norra Wexley - Alliance Overhaul, Push The Limit, Nien Numb, R2-D2
  • Shara Bey- Alliance Overhaul, Adaptability, Hera Syndulla, Targeting Astromech
  • Thane Kyrell - Alliance Overhaul, Extra Munitions, Sabine Wren, Cluster Mines

You get a classic Norra - less ability with the rear arc, but able to fight alone if she needs to because she's a lot faster; if she gets hammered she can run away much more easily. Shara means you can get use out of her ability offensively as well (remember you have a sort-of-focus token with Alliance Overhaul using the tail guns) and now can chop and change movement order with Norra, and use her whole dial (including K-turns and fast turns) - essentially Norra and Shara have the fast-movers, whilst Thane is able to drop mines to get in the way of anyone trying to pen them in or chase them down.

Ok I like this. (Though it appears to be over by 2 points)

So with Shara it's just a case of go Hard every turn to trigger the Astromech instead of finding points for Stay on Target?

You don't have to do a hard turn every turn. You can just do a green move or white move, and take a normal target lock action.

BUT, if your 'box' of green moves is going to put you somewhere you really don't want to be (and without a shield-recovering droid, you want to avoid being shot as much as possible), you can hit the gas with a speed 3 turn or speed 4 straight, and still set up a lock for someone else to shoot the pursuer off your tail.

You don't need stay on target to use targeting astromech. Targeting astromech is only really there to let you get a target lock instead of no action at all when doing a red move. It's a 2-point droid - don't expect to be using it every turn!

Shara is only PS7, so Stay On Target is not letting her react to aces doing unexpected things, nor does she have a great dial for it (it's better on a Mandalorian Protectorate fighter or T-70, which have speeds which have talon roll, turn, bank, straight, giving you almost 360o coverage).

Most importantly - since you don't have a tailgunner, it lets you koiogran to bring your three-dice main weapon to bear if you want to. (It's particularly good on a 'gunship' version of Braylen Stramm - who has a 50% chance of getting target lock and focus on a K-turn - or on Hobbie Klivian, who's garuanteed to).

These guys are heroes of the rebellion

Kwings would be heroes of the (new) republic if they were still canon
