snap crackle pop - A-Wings

By Ryedub, in X-Wing

So I've been looking at this list lately and am interested in trying it out.

A-wing - x5

Green Squadron Pilot (19)

A-wing Test Pilot (0)

Crack Shot (1)

Snap Shot (2)

Chardaan Refit (-2)

Has anyone toyed with this yet? If so do you have any suggestions or advice? I only really have experience in flying elite A-wings like Jake, Tycho and Arvel and I found it difficult to deal significant damage with them, does snap shot really pick up the slack?

I haven't faced this squadron myself, but a friend of mine went up against it during regionals. The way he described it to me was that the A-Wings started a bit split up into groups, then moved at speed 5 and boosted to converge together on one enemy ship at range 1. Snap shot attacks whittled the ship down before the regular attacks finished it off. Seems that strategy was working very well for the Snap-Crackle-Pop A-Wing player through the day.

This seems like one of those lists that's fun to play exactly once.

I have tried it, and I could be playing it wrong, but I think A-wings lost a hope of being competitive (other than Jake with prockets) once Defenders hit the scene. Part of the problem is that Snap Shot just cannot touch 3 AGI dice. Even without mods. The math for the defender is that he should roll 1.16 evades, and the attacker should roll 1 hit. Not good odds. I also tried the A-wings against some Arcs, and it was a tough match there too. I found the A-Wings struggle with 1 AGI defenders (any Evades they roll are KILLERS), and 3 AGI ships (you can't scratch their paint, except with Crack Shot).

I would love to be proven wrong, cause I used to love the A-Wings, but I feel those two dice attack and lack of action economy really hurts them. I am trying a 5x Green Sqaudron with Juke and Crack shot, which is actually pretty nice. I also want to try Snap Shot with Juke on some A-wings, but naked, I found Snap shot to leave something to be desired.

I saw it at Regionals last week in Omaha. The problem with the list is simple. Its a 1 trick pony without all the added benefits that usually are associated with A-Wing. Specifically, there are no Autothrusters. Also, with Crack Shot being a 1 use ability, there is not staying power.

Now, I ran with 2 A-Wings setup as follows:

Green Squadron Pilot(23)

Snap Shot

Chaardan Refit

Autothrusters

A-Wing Test Pilot

Juke

I had great fun flying them, and having Juke, you take an evade as your only action (unless boost is REALLY needed). That way you can Juke on your Snap Shot attack, and if you still have the evade, on your regular attack as well.

I've played against this... I was running 2x TLT K-wings and Poe. I destroyed it. Without any defensive buffs things like TLT (which I expect to be more prevalent going forward) hit the A-wings too easily.

Other than being the most expensive list (money wise) to put together, I'm not sure snap shot is worth discarding auto Thrusters in this list. Sadly being in a TLT meta its Auto thrusters or dying way to early to really impact the game. Same goes for our arch nemesis, the baron Soontir Fel.

I recently wrote an extended article with batreps and a detailed list analysis here: http://www.backtodials.com/a-wing-ace-snap-snacks-battle-report-and-list-analysis/

To give you a short version, it is spectacular fun! You have the TOOLS to deal with almost everything, but it doesn't change the fact that every battle is an uphill one. Just because you HAVE the tools, doesn't mean it's particularly easy to use them effectively. You need a peculiar blend of aggression and patience, which is very difficult to pull off. I also haven't flown it against Dengaroo, yet, but I have beaten triple /x7s twice!

Saw it at a tournament, and instead of snap, crack and pop it was mostly pop on the Awings side. Player had also bad luck with green dice (his own failing, opponents lucky against snap).

My impression: They look a bit scary, staring down a wall of 5 snaps. But its only 2dice, only if the 1st 2 rounds go well without losing an A, then there is a chance, otherwise fast downhill for the A:s. Not enough firepower.
