Imperial Landspeeder

By kelpie, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Sometime i feel the lack of equipment for empire trooper, mainly vehicle

on AoR corebook it just show AT-AT and AT-ST as main imperial choice for vehicle combat; the former is a big armored transport used to swarm plotons into mass combat, while the latter is a little 2-men close assault vehicle capable of vehicle and personel scale combat. What they completely miss is a fast moving vehicle to transport a squad around...

in the Perlemian Haul adventure (in the corebook too) it show a Cargo Skiff inside an imperial vessels, but a skiff does'nt look like something really "imperial transport". Looking at swrpg.viluppo.net i also see Passenger Landspeeder (in FaD corebook) and Luxury Speeder (in DA) as potential "bring a squad of imperial troop on field" vehicle but they all miss something, and feel too much a civilian choice for a miliary job

so i'm guessing: there are an official landspeeder used by Imperial Army/Navy/Stormtrooper to bring a squad, maybe with officer, on field? something like a speeder they can use to patrol empire-controlled planets, or to bring forth and back a stormtrooper squad where needed (ie where the PC are doing things)? or i should barely keep using cargo skiff or passenger landspeeder and, occasionally, a big walker like AT-AT or AT-EST?

Believe the APC style stormtrooper landspeeder from rebels is in FiB. And the Chariot command speeder ( think like a light armored landspeeder but loaded with comm and tactical analysis gear) is in LbE.

That said, the type of vehicle you're describing would be like an outer space version of the Tactical Truck, Jeep, or Staff Car. In these cases the vehicles really aren't that different from their civilian counterpart. They aren't intended for frontline combat, so they don't have any armor. They are a logistics tool, something to move people and equipment from the rear to the forward staging area perhaps, but not something you'd really drive into the teeth. They may have a light weapon mount for defense, but again aren't really expected to use it with any seriousness. So the only real difference are things that likely wouldn't be statted out. Namely, a paint job and perhaps some recovery tools and such.

So in most cases, all you need do is take the civilian vehicle, add a light defensive weapon (likely ranging from heavy rifle to heavy repeater) on a pintle mount (takes 1 HP, weapon essentially counts as being on a tripod) and say the vehicle is painted imperial gray with a perhaps a cog on the front and a colored inventory stripe and id number near the back.

If you want more of an actual APC, take the personnel carrier from EotE Core and add the armor attachment and an autoblaster and you'll essentially have the wheeled APC from that great tactical star wars game of them all, Force Commander. Star Wars Techno for the win!

You can basically take any existing stat block, up the armor by 1, slap on a light blaster cannon and just call it an imperial version of the vehicle. Most planets are capable of producing car/tank sized vehicles by themselves, and the bulk of the empire's occupation forces is actually not Storm Troopers but Imperial Army, so you'd see a lot of locally produced stuff, including wheeled APCs and tracked tanks being used by them. Storm Troopers are much more elite troops that go where they are needed, and generally don't rely on planetary vehicles to get around, unless it's a full scale assault in an AT-AT.

Mmmh ok thank you

at the moment i'm using an existing model and add them some attachment to make more "militarish", as you suggested. I was wondering if there was some official imperial speeder version (like the 74z and 57d speeder bike, the former being the military version of the latter), but seems like there are'nt

thank you for your answer

There's also some tips on militarizing vehicle stats in the back of DC. Just be careful as it's not exactly 1:1. The militarized landspeeder for example is a repulsortank, and not a space humvee.

Also note that FFG detailed the Rush Troop Transport Speeder in the book “Dangerous Covenants”, see http://swrpg.viluppo.net/transportation/vehicles/410/

I second the Imperial Troop Transport may be what you are looking for. It's canon now since it was in Rebels. Why don't we see it more later? Perhaps the environments and nature of the Imperial deployments we see on screen?

Hoth: Assaulting a heavily defended dug in base. The heavy walkers are thus used. Perhaps afterwards you may see supplies and intelligence gathering troops arriving in dropped landspeeders? (but, see Tattooine below)

Endor: It's a jungle. Small scout speeders are used along with walkers that can walk and push through the jungle terrain.

Tattooine: At first glance, it would have made the most sense to see landspeeders here. But, I have a but (snicker).....

Stormtroopers are highly mobile assault troops typically not used just for security. They ride around on Star Destroyers and get deployed directly from orbit. Perhaps we don't see landspeeders because the main mode of transport is one of the many shuttles seen in canon. Shuttles can quickly deploy and pickup troops anywhere and most even have hyperdrives if needed. Ground vehicles are only needed when a heavy ground attack vehicle is in order. Thus, walkers is what we see. Perhaps Imperial landspeeders are relegated to civlianish utility vehicles in non-combat zones moving cargo, dropping off personnel, etc.

We don't see many combat Imperial landspeeders anymore (after Rebels time period) since tactics proved they weren't viable?
