Shoot bombs off the board...

By Mrk1984, in X-Wing

So we now have the torpedoes that allow us to remove obstacles, should there be a card that allows a ship to shoot a bomb to detonate it?

I'm thinking of an EPT: Bomb Defuser, 2 points. Attack: Discard this card to choose a bomb at range 1-3 and inside your firing arc. Roll 1 attack die, on a blank remove the bomb token, on a hit or crit you must choose one ship at range one of the bomb token, that ship will suffer the effects of the bomb.

This would definitely not be a top-tier card, but it could be interesting.

Waaaaay too expensive. Bombs are rare enough that just the slot alone is probably too expensive.

and DEFINITELY not an Elite upgrade

Most valuable upgrade slot in the game and you want to put a 2 point upgrade into it that you'd you'd be lucky to use in 1 in 20 games?

Compare that to something like Juke

Then construct a nope button large enough to be mistaken for a small moon

If it did something else that also worked on game elements that are found in every game, and cost a lot less, and went in a different upgrade slot, then maybe

If I were to do this, I'd make it ordnance. That said, bombs are already not used enough. No need to nerf it.

Your internets is in the mail, sir.

I'd rather have remote detonation mines.

What if it were a torpedo, 1 point

Attack: Discard this card to choose a bomb at range 1-3 and inside your firing arc. Choose one ship at range one of the bomb token, that ship will suffer the effects of the bomb, then remove the bomb token.

This can be used defensively or as a way to force the bomb to hit an opponent.

It's probably bad unless you're running it alongside your own bombs.

Fundamentally, this kind of counterplay design is a bad idea. Designing something specifically as a direct counter to something else and ONLY that thing, is just no fun - because unless that thing is used a LOT, it won't be worth taking the counter. And if it is, played enough, then the counter kills it and it's not worth taking any more. THe counter forces it out of the meta without either being played.

Autothrusters is the closes thign to a direct counter in the game - to turrets - but even they work at range 3 against in-arc attacks.

I'd love to see a balanced way to shoot torpedoes, missiles, and bombs down. Reminds me of the old TIE Fighter game.

Shooting down torps and missiles would require them to be a token of some sort.

You could figure out a way to do that, but it would drastically alter the entire game.

Or there could simply be a game mechanic to interrupt and prevent the Torp/Missile from hitting. It is fired, but doesn't hit.

Maybe some kind of dice roll or something? :D

Or you could just run over them.

Probably the best way to do this would be a modification similar to this rough idea.

Point Defense Laser

Modification ??points

When a bomb, torpedo or missle would cause you damage, you may discard this card to roll 2 defense dice. For each evade rolled, cancel 1 hit or crit suffered.

During the gold squadron/scum & villiany live cast at worlds; Alex Davey said that he doesn't like hard counter cards. If the card would hard counter something, then it also has to have another mechanic that would work in every other game.. This definitely sounds like a hard counter card for bombs. What could be added that makes it more viable in every other game? Maybe EPT "point defense" Attack: Discard this card to choose a bomb or obstacle at range 1-3 and inside your firing arc. Roll 1 attack die, on a blank remove the bomb token, on a hit or crit you must choose one ship at range one of the bomb token, that ship will suffer the effects of the bomb.

Thoughts on my update?

I remember playing the old TIE Fighter video game and you had to escort bombers or other big ships, and part of that was shooting down torpedoes before they hit.

So, a cool mechanic would be to interrupt to spend your attack to shoot down a torpedo, bomb, or missile. It would have to be balanced in a way that it didn't make ordinance pointless to bring though.
