New to Imperial Assault, what do i need to play competitively?

By Irokenics, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of getting IA competitively and of course will start off with the Core Set.

I wanted to know for tournaments, do i need to have bought all the expansion boxes in order to play on all the tiles?

Also what are the recommended expansions and ally/villan packs that are considered essential for competitive play?

Thanks a whole bunch guys!

Depends what you want to play. Try using air armies or there's a few army builder apps out there, which both have where you find the cards you need.

Rebels you want saboteurs,Leia and Obi Wan is doing his rounds. Plus Gideon and 3p0

Imperials Stormtroopers, Blaise, Isb. You will also want rule by fear and zillo techniques.

Scum. Banthas, HKS, hired guns, Gideon and 3p0.

Look in the skirmish sub forum lots of information and videos which are really useful. Read the Austin Regional from last week post.

Hope that helps and welcome

You need the 3 maps, that are currently tournament legal. It is absolutely OK to buy just the maps, you don't need the tiles.

1 core set + additional 1 elite Stormtrooper card gives you a fully playable imperial army. (regular Stormtroopers, elite Stormtroopers, elite Probe Droids, regular Officers and regular Royal Guards are all playable competitively.) Start playing that and decide later, what else you need. Check cards.boardwars.eu to find out which cards come in which set.

So when you go to a tournament how do decide which map you play and how brings the tiles and makes the map

The key is to have a buddy who is as interested as you to play and test and play and try different builds and play because the game is so much fun.

See tournament rules - there are 3 'legal' tournament maps in use, usually all pairs play the same random mission drawn from the 6 missions. The player with initiative provides the tiles or playmat for the mission.

So you have to basically have to but every map or expansion to play competively

Buy I mean

If competitive means sanctioned organized tournaments you need either the 3 playmats that are the current legal maps in the rotation, or the tiles - i.e. the core and boxed expansions.

If competitive means playing in game nights in stores, then it depends on what the store allows or not.

Not really, I've only ever played on the maps I printed out from ibsh. If I went to a regional though, would bring my tiles. Right now you would need tiles from Bespin , Hoth and the Core. They really aren't that hard to get a hold of. You could just buy the tiles off eBay, but if you shop around, you could get the full set somewhere and then you'd have several armies to play from. All of the expansions are worth getting I believe. I use stuff fro. The core still, I ise mhd and my HK droids all the time. I've played verena and my Wampas a bunch. I haven't played the Bespin stuff as much, but it's newer and I don't play as often as I like. I've played lando, wing guard and ugnaughts. You could just get the mats though and build an army out of ally/villain packs though
