This card reads:

Exhaust Old Book of Lore: Choose an investigator at your location. That investigator searches the top 3 cards of his or her deck for a card, draws it, and shuffles the remaining cards into his or her deck.

I just want to confirm that I'm not searching for a specific card, i.e. that I have to name the card and hope to find it. Basically, this just means that I take the top 3 cards of my deck, take one if I want it, and shuffle the rest into my deck.

Precisely. If Old Book of Lore was meant to search for a specific card, this would be stated in the card's textbox. Something like "search for a Tome" or "search for a Skill card".

He was asking if he had to name the card before revealing the 3 cards. If you did, the card would have stated that specifically.

For instance: "Name a card. Reveal the top 3 cards of your deck and add a single copy of the named card to your hand, if able. Then shuffle the remaining cards back into your deck."
