IG-88, the new Arc-Dodger (need help on stress issues)

By SlaveofChrist, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi Folks! Hope all is well :).

I've been toying with an idea of being able to use IG-88C as an Arc-Dodger. To make this work, I have been looking at the following:

IG-88C (36)

Experimental Interface (3)

Expert Handling (2)

Advanced Sensors (3)

So, one way, I believe I understand the flow and sequence (though...please correct me if I'm wrong) of Actions and the stress.

Method A

  1. Use Advanced Sensors
  2. Perform 1 Free Action
  3. Boost
  4. Perform Free Evade Action (IG-88C's ability)
  5. Activate EI off of Evade Action, perform Expert Handling (Barrel Roll)
  6. Get Stress from Expert Handling, then get Stress from EI (x2 total)
  7. Reveal Green maneuver, clear one stress
  8. Finish maneuver with x1 stress

The second way(s)...not so clear...

Method B1

  1. Use Advanced Sensors
  2. Perform 1 Free Action
  3. Perform Expert Handling (Barrel Roll) receive stress token
  4. Unable to activate 2nd Action with EI due to stress token
  5. Float down river without paddle
  6. cry

Method B2

  1. Use Advanced Sensors
  2. Perform 1 Free Action
  3. Perform Expert Handling (Barrel Roll)
  4. Activate EI off of Expert Handling, Perform Boost
  5. Perform Free Evade Action (IG-88C's ability)
  6. Get stress from Expert Handling, get stress from EI (x2 total)
  7. Reveal Green maneuver, clear one stress
  8. Finish maneuver with x1 stress  (???)

I'm still trying to get my head around the whole "nesting actions" thing and as only myself and my 6 year old son play, I don't have the benefit of having another adult to run ideas off of. I believe Method A works, but I want the flexibility to being able to either start with a boost and end with a barrel roll, or start with a barrel roll and end with a boost - thereby giving me greater surprise "landings" in my maneuvers.

As always, help would be most welcome and appreciated :D thanks!

Method A works fine.

Method B2 doesn't work because EI only lets you perform actions from cards that say "ACTION:" at the top, which Engine Upgrade does not.

With that particular combo of ship and cards, you can boost, then barrel roll, but never the other way around.

Shucks. You're right, forgot about that one (must be more tired then I realize). Thanks though!

P.S. - Just out of curiosity, if EI did work on normal "menu" options, would sequence two (B2) work? I just want to see if I'm learning about the whole "nesting" actions thing, thanks!

Yes, that sequence would work if you had a target for Experimental Interface. The full sequence would look something like this:

- Use Advanced Sensors, perform Expert Handling.

- Expert Handling makes you perform a free barrel roll action.

- Use that free barrel roll action to trigger Experimental Interface.

- Perform (for example) Black Market Slicer Tools action.

- Receive stress from Experimental Interface; it finishes resolving.

- Receive stress from Expert Handling; it finishes resolving. You have 2 stress total.

- Perform green maneuver, remove 1 stress token.

Hopefully that makes sense. :)

Yes! Makes much more sense for me now. I missed the part about the "perform a free barrel roll action" which then allows you to chain it with EI. I also now see how the stress sequence plays out, final action "activator" (EI) gets stress first, then first action - gets stress. Almost like a math equation with order of operations.

Very well explained, thanks a bunch! I think I can tackle some more challenging builds that I have been avoiding due to this difficult (for me) concept.

You Sir, get a Medal of Valour for your help!
