Really cool - the time/effort to do this must be immense though :)

It is. Base coating is quick, a few hours, maybe 3-4 (including the freehand). Level 1 grey highlight took about 5 hours, maybe 5.5. Level 2 grey highlight is about 1.5 hours so far, 60% done. Once that is done though, everything else is small in comparisson. I figure 2-3 hours to highlight up the purple, 30 minutes or so on the white. 1 hr on the freehand. 1 hour on OLE work. Then an hour or 2 on engines... I have a new plan to get better engines, might take longer real time (but not much painting time).

Then given all the work I've put into this, I might actually paint the bottom more than a base coat.. Thinking too large talons on the bottom. I'm a bit slow, but who cares. All told at least 20 hours... Depending how much I do on the bottom.

And we're done, finally!

Even did a bit of simple lazy work on the bottom.

Decidedly not dead, a WIP. Been working mostly in Painting RW nowadays. Was at a loss what to freehand here, so I guess I'll make a nod to C&C (not intentionally but it seemed fitting).

I like! Was looking forward to your Quasar repaint. You always have some original paint schemes and I love the freehands on them

Yeah dude, that is awesome. If ever I have my ships painted, I'll have to paint 'em like that. Freakin' fantastic.

its only going to get better (hopefully), stay tuned. I'm back working on this after a week off, effectively. It won't be my best, but it should turn out pretty good.

Thanks, just trying to break the drudgery of canon imp repaints everywhere

I actually forgot it was a work in progress! How can it be improved?

mostly just highlighting to improve contrast, doing the engines, doing all the OSL work to add 'lights' /windows, lighting the hangers, etc. Right now, it is just too flat, not being highlighted at all and left with base colours. All I've done at that point was put down a darker base colour to hit the panel lines, then a shade up on the panels to give that contrast. Really separate the dark and light on my fictitious, and moderately comicy style of panel highlighting. It will match the ISD above.

Finished the quasar. As there was some interest, I'll give some WIP pics and some breakdowns of the where what and why(?). I did get swept away at the end and missed a few WIP pics of the metal highlighting or lighting though.

So lets start WIP, I work a bit different than others, in that I don't use any 'washes' in my typical work flow (maybe for some weathering effects, but they are absent here).

Step 1 ) Dark base coat, I take my base colours, and I mix them say 2:1 (Black : base colour) and put that down.

iZaESGF.jpg

Step 2) Paint only the panels in my base colours (not mixed with black) and leave the panel lines be. Not Bronze/gold has no panel lines yet, I added those later. I also do my freehand right after the base coat, in this case bronze with a black outline to separate it.

uqsVDi2.jpg

Step 3) I start highlighting, for the sake of this one I'm going to go through the purple, as I remember to take pics at each stage of that. Purple was a 4 level highlight in this case, Grey was 3 (Dark blue grey, pale blue grey, pale grey blue line highlight). I started with 50/50 hexed lichen/warlord purple for highlight 1, and two brush blended it back at the rear edge (video of this technique in spoilers, very good return on investment for time generally). Then I did the same a second time, smaller, with warlord purple, taking care to not cover more than 50% of the first highlight. Finally I did a line highlight in warlord purple (more intense than the thin blended layer) on the fronts, and a warlord + white line down the center on the highest point.

I then did the same thing with the bronze/gold. The darker panel lines in that last (finished purple) photo are a dark brown colour (battlefield brown by P3 in this case). I tend touched up any mess with bronze, highlights new gold, old gold, and silver line highlight at the very edge to get the metallic effects shown.

Step kinda 4 (as there were like 8 odd highlighting steps). I varnish it, as I'll be handling and moving it a lot during light work.

Step 5) Lights and engines are the same thing, I do them with glazes. I like to put white 'lights' on the model before I start, where I plan to light up, works as a guide. I start glazing with VMC dark blue, and create a thin glaze, usually a good drop of glaze medium, thin it with water, and add a tip of the paint I want. I apply that over the extents I want glow to cover, it will be very faint. I add a second coat, over slightly less area, and maybe even a third, depending how much opacity I want. Then I switch to VMC Andrea blue glaze (again, very little paint, we want transparent here), and add yet another coat, over a smaller area, closer to the white lights I painted. If desired, as a second of the Andrea as well. Then I hit the lights with VMC Sky blue, I find this always needs 2 coats of dots/swipes to get the intensity I want. Taper glow width (how far out you went) to your desired intensity and adjust layers accordingly. It is really simple, once you get the knack for building the glaze. Make sure you let them dry fully, glaze medium slows drying, and you don't want to lift previous layers. Look particularly at the flash maxed hanger area, you can see the taper pretty well.

the lights really give it a total new depth!! I absolutely love it!! you did a fantastic job!

Some VCXs I speed painted for a friend, about 40 minutes total tops.

Is the ship color and logo a Nod (see what I did there?) to Command and Conquer?

Only because I could think of nothing else cool to put on a quasar, but yes, Scorpion tail was chosen, and I chose the brotherhood of nod one for it.

I love the light in the hangar bay, makes the whole paint work even more amazinger than it is.

No light, just a photo with flash. I'd love to light it, but really no meat on the quasar and laziness (seeing as someone lit a gozanti recently).

Oh, looked like light :P

Still, amazing painting there
