RIP Leonard Cohen

By EastCoast, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Poet, songwriter, singer. Probably most famous for writing the one song that can make even the most cold hearted person tear up. Here's Kate McKinnon performing it from SNL's cold open this week. Just a warning, if you watch this on youtube, you may want to stay out of the comments section, I'm pretty sure they'll cause cancer.

I'm not a huge fan, but he is still an amazing musician, and a great artist and man in general. His music is extremely emotional.

The worst part is the following exchange when my mom called me:

Mom: "I have some bad news for you; Spock died."

Me: "Leonard Cohen died, mom. Spock was Leonard Nimoy."

Mom: "Oh? Well it's not as bad as I thought!"

Me: "It might be worse... Leonard Nimoy actually died several months ago... sorry about that."

Mom: "Oh dang!"

Never heard of him.

Leonard Cohen is one of those people whose songs are better when covered by other, better singers. Same as Bob Dylan really. Both extraordinary writers though.

Oddly as a Dj and musician i'm aware of his work, his importance and influence on many other great artists but i've never been a fan. I don't *dislike* his music but i never went out of my way to listen to it. (unlike say Bowie or Lemmy).

I do respect that a lot of people will be justifyabley gutted at his passing though.

Sorry LC fans, if its anything as gutting as Bowie dying was in my friends group my sympathies are with you.

On the plus side , few men get to make a difference in so many peoples lives and have a 'life less ordinary' , i think you can go to your grave with some sort of satisfaction knowing your lifes works (even if at times maudlin) have made *millions* of people happy, or at least got them through tough times.
