Another case of no large base ships in the top.

Well done guys!

Another case of no large base ships in the top.

Well done guys!

He just posted that he got second; he's fielding an MC80. I didn't see where he posted the other lists tying for first, just his three opponent's approximate lists.

I like what you've done with your list. I've long run Rieekan+3 Corvettes, though the switching off to Home-One and TRC90s works for the anti-flotilla meta.

One thing I'm curious about a couple of things:

Medical teams: What were your impressions based on the games? I've not really run them yet, usually because I'm running other upgrades or am just keeping the points slim, but I'm curious to see how often they seemed to trigger on a given unit.

Squadrons: How do you think they did overall? I'm usually building lists that stop squadrons with squadrons, but I've been trying to get light squadron lists to work well enough for a while. Maybe it is just me not accepting that some enemy squadron shots are just going to get through, but I always find myself wanting a few more.

Oh hey Church, I'm your first round opponent with the B wing swarm.

More stats coming after battle of the trident tomorrow

Ah cool. I misread his rounds as the list for some reason.

I stand corrected.

I do not know what the 1st place list was. #3 was a Rieekan triple MC30 with a corvette or two.

Medical teams didn't trigger once during the day. My MC80 only took hull damage during the third round and took no crits. My corvettes tended to just... explode. Seemed like the first hit they took blew out shields and the second one leveled them.

The squad screen felt like the absolute minimum I could have taken. Against the 2xHWK, 2xYT, 6xBwing list, I just kind of floundered and he racked up 7 superior position tokens. 2xHWK is very effective.

The second round was Mauler, Howl, Dengar, 2xTIE Interceptor, Rhymer, 3xTIE Bomber. The squad battle was so spread out that it helped me pick off critical squads and avoid the worst of his synergies.

Without Rieekan, it would not have been enough. Zombie Wedge and Zombie Tycho appeared in 2/3 rounds to slow down bombers from getting superior positions tokens.

That's some pretty rad extra prize support too!

So, my fist experience with reporting on Tournament results, and I realized only after I began tracking in excel that it would be extremely difficult to import the lists into the forum viewer here.

I also apologize for the few days it took - work and such.

One final note: unfortunately I received the wrong standings list at the end of the tournament, and by the time we realized our mistake the magic folks had erased it. I was able to reconstruct at least the top 8, the lists below:

(Note; we had a 3 way tie for first place at 25 tournament points. The winner won his first two games 10-1, and then lost the third game 5-6 to the eventual third place player in a hard-fought game)

Wait, your list only had 4 Bwings? Jeezus. Still felt like 8. The 2xHWK let them get everywhere.

Oh yeah haha. Only 4 B-wings. The Flight Commander/FCT combo sure helps them get along too.

Been considering dropping the CR90 to another Flotilla and trimming some more to bring more of them.

And my list:

2 YT-1300s ( 26 points)

When I was just a lowly nub, I always enjoyed the interaction of Adar Tallon / Yavaris, but until recently BWings have been too slow. Luke always rolls blanks for me, even with BCC x2, so I decided to give Toryn Farr a go with some B-Wings. HWKs to free them up, YT1300s for one of the best hull to point costs with escort, and voila. Add Flight controllers for some slapping around and you've got a really potent fighter wing. Imagine my pleasure and unbridled self back patting when the lists at worlds kind of ran something similar. Actually, it was kind of annoying, to be honest. (Just kidding - well done everyone at worlds.)

Dodonna ended up being a pick for me merely for the points cost. I got to put out some good crits during the course of the day as well, but it wasn't really the focus of the list.

I decided to just go with a straight up 400 point list. I expected bids to be high (they were) and fully resolved to be content with going second (I did, every game.)

My first and last opponent chose Superior Positions, and my second opponent chose Most Wanted.

First Game, against Justin H (Church14):

He had Home One, 3 TRC90s. (I guess in hindsight only two of them had TRCs, but they definitely put the hurt on me just the same)

For squadrons he had Tycho, Dash, Wedge, and an A-wing.

He chose Superior Positions, and arrayed himself to sweep around the obstable course we had set up, with Home One in the middle and the little sharks arrayed around it.

I knew that at long range I would easily be picked apart by the TRC/Home One Combo, so I resolved to **** the torpedoes and just go right at him, or at least slightly to the side like.

I figured that if I cut off his rearmost two corvettes, I could rack up some points and escape mostly intact, and that combined with the fighter points should put me in a decent standing.

Things went mostly according to plan, but I wildly underestimated just how effective TRC/Home One would be. My opponent also flew his list very well, and tied up two Bwings with Tycho for a key turn before I could get an intel bubble over to them.

The MVPs of most of my day were the vanilla HWKs. I noticed for a long time that most people just run Jan or one intel ship. Two worked amazingly well. My opponent also suffered from a lack of Intel. Had he had an intel ship, this whole game might have gone completely different. As it stood though, I was able to isolate 3/4s of his fighter wave and slowly whittle it down until they were gone.

My ships did not fare so well. The AF went down pretty quickly between being pinged by the TRCs and then a beautiful shot from Home One that overwhelmed the defenses. My corvette went down as well, and I believe I ended up losing Bright Hope to a last ditch point blank shot from Home One, which was untouched.

I killed a Corvette, and all of his fighters. It ended up being Superior positions though that saved my bacon, and was arguably my second MVP of the day (See game 3). The Rieekan proved to be somewhat of a liability for my opponent, as I was able to Yavaris double tap some Bwings on a poor corvette that should have died long before it ended up dying, just racking up some victory tokens.

(I realized at the end of the day that my opponent was one of those who tied for first place at 25 VPs; it was likely my stubbornness that prevented him from eking out one more tournament point in this game. Sorry Church - it was well fought. :( )

This was my first loss of the day, a 7-4.

Second game: Bill Q (you can reference the list above, I have provided a summary below)

2x Gladiators, 2x Raiders, 1x Gozanti. 4 instances of APT, 4 instances of ordnance experts, suppressor, slicing tools, screed nastiness. (My first time actually facing an Insidious though.) 6x TIE fighters were his only fighter defense.

He chose Most wanted - I named Demolisher and my CR90 as objective ships.

This was a very close game. I ended up killing Demolisher, Suppressor, and I believe a Raider.

I lost everything except Bright Hope and my squadrons. However, between the point disparity of Demo and a CR90, and all of my fighters surviving, he only ended up winning the game 6-5.

Sitting at 9 TPs at the beginning of the 3rd round and something like 21st place.

At this point I was kind of giving up hope. My fighter were acquitting themselves well, but my ships were getting wrecked each game.

My last round began though and all was saved.

Third Round: Alvar C

My opponent picked Superior Positions, with an ominous "I'm probably going to regret picking this." - By the end, he would indeed regret his choice.

His list: Interdictor with title, targetting scramblers, projection experts, needa, your basic tank build. He also had two Glads (1 of them Demo), a raider, and 2x TIE Advanced, Jumpmaster, and Mithel.

His ships advanced towards me slowly, racking up engineering tokens, until things came to a head in the asteroid field with a frigate duel between his Raider and my CR90. The raider ended up going down once my fighters arrived, and he jumped his fighters into mine to go down swinging. Mithel ended up burning all of his defense tokens to stay alive in the first round, and ended up getting sniped by an AA shot in the early second. After mopping up the rest of his fighters, it was time for Demo and the other GSD to join the party.

What followed was a targeted slaughter. Though I lost my corvette, my assault frigate, and Bright Hope, the Bwings surgically double tapped with Yavaris on one target each turn. Combined with the HWKs and Yavaris' side shots and the remaining YT1300, I was able to overwhelm the bolstered defenses offered by the Interdictor and focus one ship down at a time from the rear, racking up points upon points.

I ended up tabling him, his Interdictor dying in the 6th round. I ended up with 17 Superior Positions tokens, for a total score of 655 points. Holy wow.

Note, it seems to me that with Superior positions against a Bwing fleet it makes sense at some point to just let your ship die. The Interdictor shuffled many shields to the Gladiators and then repaired itself for at least 2 turns, artificially extending their life against the double striking B-wings each turn. This netted me probably 5 - 10 more tokens than I would have had if the ships were not repairing continuously.

This netted me a 10-1 victory, and catapulted me up to 19 TPs with a pretty considerable MOV for my one win, for a final showing of 8th place overall.

My opponents were all very friendly, and I would definitely recommend the pastimes crew to anyone who is within reasonable driving distance of Niles, Illinois to come out and play.

Edited by Eggzavier

My turn:

A) I've never seen prize support like they had at Pastimes, and all the Gold Squadron guys showed community spirit/solidarity with some cool shirts. Really impressed

B) despite my post regarding fleet Ambush, I took it anyways. And as it turns out, so did 2 of the top 3 lists. No ragrets. But I probably won't do it again.

C) review: see Eggzaviers post above for my list, Tyler P. Basically, 2 TRC90, comms net bright hope, slicer tool-Lando-tractor beam-troll ship, Mon Karen XX9 with Dodonna.

Round 1-

Got stomped by the eventual 3rd place winner, 10-1. I knew that my list, particularly the TRC90s, would really not do well against the double evade MC30s. I did have some leeway and methods for dealing with those MC30s through Mon Karen and tractor beams on each of my flotillas, but I kept forgetting my triggers (I'm very big on not asking for even the smallest takebacks, especially at regional level), the deployment had every single one of those shrimps set to wreck Mon Karen (with Rieekan Zombie bonus in the event I did manage to kill one), so I was looking for ways to save points from the outset.

The match in a nutshell- we played Intel sweep, him with initiative. Our flagships also served as the objective ships, but his was set to collect 3 tokens easily under the cover of all 3 shrimps. I placed my TRC90s on the opposite side of the map to collect 2 tokens and flank the shrimps. My only shot at not suffering an embarrassing defeat was to take out his objective ship fast, so my plan was to fling my fighters to take it out and ram it to death/slow it down with my troll flotilla (getting a virtual engine tech ramming bonus damage with quantum storm), but that didn't happen. Not even close. He destroyed everything but my flagship, I think, and got the three tokens. Though I did take out a YT and a shrimp.

Lesson learned-don't take a bunch of triggers (tractor beams) that you're no used to using to a regional tournament. It'll just wind up being wasted points. Also have a plan for things with double evades when 2 of the only 3 damage dealing ships in your fleet have 1 and 2 dice attacks (A wings would have helped, but I went all in to taking out that objective ship).

Round 2-

Can't remember his name, and his fleet is not included in Eggz's post, but he ran an ISD II, Interdoctor, and Demolisher with some fighter support (no Rhymer) and Konstantine at the helm. I had initiative, we played most wanted. He chose Mon Karen and the Interdictor as the target ships. I think his thought was that the interdictor could take the punishment and repair itself while he parked his ISD in front of Mon Karen, but using my last/first activation advantage and a well timed Nav command, I managed to zip right by the ISD front arc. After the second round, I ignored the ISD, realizing that I would be able to kill it and the interdictor, and just took a bunch of obstructed shots and the interdictor while slicing away his engineering commands. The first 2 rounds were pretty tense, as we jockeyed to inflict as much hurt on each other as possible, but when I zipped by the ISD with Mon karen, the results were very evident, and the match lost a lot of steam. 8-3

Lesson learned- A wings are fantastic when attacking the most wanted ship. 2 black dice? Yes please! Also, I was still suffering from trigger memory loss at key times

Round 3- starting with 9 points (Egg and I could have been matched up here!)

My opponent was Bill S (right above me in Egg's roster). I was very downhearted when I first saw his MC30s, but then pleasantly surprised that they did not have APTs. Or Rieekan. Or OEs. It was nice to not have to face the same exact monstrosity as in my first round, and his play style/list choice was refreshingly different and unique. I took initiative and chose superior positions (he was 3/3 on playing that objective for the day).

From the get-go, I had the clear upper hand for scoring points with more maneuverable squads and ships (and deployment; the TRC90s were set to flank, yet again), but he moved his fleet in such a way that I couldn't really capitalize on it all that well. He presented too many threats for me to wiggle in more than one effective last/first activation with the TRC90s, but I still managed to get 6 tokens between those and my A wings, mostly just ignoring his fighters. I ended up killing everything but his Mon Karen, and he killed all my squads along with one of the flotillas and the generic TRc90. The last kill I made was a pretty sweet XX9 activated shot from Mon karren on his last shrimp, which already had 1 damage on it. With Dodonna, I was drawing 8 cards and only needed 1 structural to seal the 8-3. I got it.

Overall, he played well with what he brought, I just think he suffered with some upgrade inefficiency. Chris definitely whiffed on 2 major shots from the MC30s against Mon Karen, which OEs could have absolutely salvaged. That would have completely turned the match around at a crucial moment.

Lessons learned: take Superior Positions instead of Intel Sweep. With the 2 HWKs, 4 A wings, and 2 TRC90s, I can get those guys to hit above their pay grade. MC30s are a lot more scary with OEs and an ordnance upgrade

Overall Synopsis: ended with 17 points and in 12th, top half (par for me). When considering the major defeat I suffered round 1, I think I made a decent rebound. I needed to be more aggressive in my later rounds to place higher, but I payed dearly for being aggressive in my first round, lost confidence in the fleet, and played conservatively to avoid losing my Mon karen again. This was probably for the best, as I kept missing important triggers that I had planned for during my matches. I guess I should also mention that I'd never played with this fleet before. In the end, I still had a lot of fun, gained valuable experience, and had a great time in Chicago for the weekend. Would totally go again if the opportunity presents itself.

Some AAR points:

I'm usually pretty good about remembering triggers, mostly because the tables I've played on have that extra half foot on either side to place your cards. They're easier to scan in that manner, which helps me. Pastimes had the 3 foot tables, same as was reported to be at worlds just 2 weeks ago. I played at my normal pace but kept revealing the wrong ships command dial (with 2 sets of similar ships), thus activating my ships out of order, or forgetting to check my triggers because they weren't right in front of me. So for those who haven't played on the smaller tables where you have to place the cards to the side of the mat, I suggest giving it a go (even if your table has the extra half foot) to see just how well you know your fleets, and how good you are with triggers. I think it would help with pacing. It definitely caused me to try slowing down (and nothing against Pastimes here, I definitely took a list I wasn't prepared to use effectively).

I got a massive migraine starting in the middle of round 2, so I apologize to my opponents if I seemed grumpy.

Bring migraine medicine. Thinking hurts.

And that's all from me. Hopefully I'll have better success and no migrains at Gigabites in a couple weeks.

Thank everyone for all the great AARs. I'm always impressed how much detail everyone can remember afterwards.. after a day of tournament armada, my mind is mush.

Lesson learned- A wings are fantastic when attacking the most wanted ship. 2 black dice? Yes please!

Just thought I should let you know that there is errata for this objective.. only ships benefit from the bonus die.

It was not only our first piece of errata... It was the first piece that was ever added to an FAQ Document.

'twas the First.... and the Most ignored... :D

Or do you mean... Least Wanted?

Greeblehaul you go!

Thanks for the heads up on that. Completely missed it in the FAQ, and now I feel kinda bad. I got 3 or 4 shots off with the As, which is fairly significant at an extra 4 black dice on target, but it would have gone down in the 6th round with TRC90s sniping from behind. Which means he might have had an extra activation (the killing blow was a really strong forward arc shot by Mon Karen which went well beyond the remaining hull), but it wouldn't have changed the final outcome. So I now I've talked myself into feeling better. And now I know.

Yeah, there was one list not included in the stack of submitted lists that I received.

So i guess the final numbers would have been 10 Imperials and 16 Rebels.

And that would put the count at 4 Interdictors, none of which made top 8.
