Last night some friends and I experimented with a variety of the game that (as far as we are aware) we made up ourselves. We kitted out about forty individual ships of up to 32 points using squad builder ( http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build ) and printed them out. We cut the printouts into cards of uniform size and then each of the four of us was given one at random and we randomised teams so it was 2v2 with ships we hadn't selected.

Some of the match-ups really synergised and some didn't, but that's what made it great because we had a laugh at a few before we even started playing. We really enjoyed it and are trying to think of a name for the style. Anybody here ever done anything similar?

Sure. By using the squad builder in that link, we made a whole lot of cards that looked like this:

The advantage of doing that was that by having all the necessary cards printed that way it saved heaps of set-up time. Use the squad builder to make say thirty different kinds of ship (ten for each faction) and try to make them as diverse as possible (some arc dodgers, some ordnance carriers etc) then print them out in the way shown above. Cut them out, shuffle them and you're ready to go. Just change the model as necessary because with these printouts you don't need to use cards.

That's right. Pure random draw. We had a game of Ryad and Janson vs Kyle Katarn and a scyk. It's chaos, and that makes it more fun. There's combos that would be impossible otherwise.
