MoM Newbie : Couple questions

By DukeOfAnkh, in Mansions of Madness

Hey everyone, brand new to MoM and really to FFG in general, but I'm a long time tabletop'er and am really enjoying this so far. Having played through two scenarios I do have a couple of questions…

  1. Given the following text

Preston Fairmont suffers 2 Damage and 1 Horror (Observation +1 negates).

Imagine the result is 2 success. Am I correct in assuming the investigator can decide how to negate? Ex. 1 damage and 1 horror could be negated. We're making sure the negate does not only apply to the Horror portion.

  2. I'm debating tracking down a copy of first edition to add more variety into the game. Monsters/Tiles/Investigators and am wondering if the general consensus is that it's worth doing so.

  3. I know scenarios follow the same general plot line on replay, but I'm wondering if any elements really change? Monster generation / Map layout / antagonists etc.

  4. We encountered three interaction points that led to puzzles. Upon the first interaction it said something to the effect of…

  5. If the investigator has evidence 'x' they may have 3 extra attempts.

Each subsequent interaction did not present this text. So does this effect only work once if you have the evidence? And does it only work if the investigator with the evidence is the first one to interact?

Thanks in advance everyone!

1) Yes you can choose what you want to negate. In your example you either take 1 horror or 1 damage.

2) No need to track down first edition stuff anymore. The first two expansions covers everything that the first edition has.

3) Depends on the scenario. Most common variation is monster variation followed by tile layout variation. The next is item placement variation.

4) I'd say to remember that whoever has that evidence can attempt it 3 extra times, but the interpretation that it only works the time it is mentioned is also acceptable. I'd just make a house rule on how you prefer to play that.
