What beats 4 TLT Y-Wings...

By Clutterbuck, in X-Wing

...and is enjoyable to play.

Here's the background. My main opponents don't care much about the game. They want to play something easy and effective, so they use 4 TLT Y-wings. What is a list that doesn't just eat it against the Y-Wings and is also fun to play?

Corran- PTL, FCS, R2-D2, Engine (48)

Poe- (PS8) Lone Wolf, Pattern Analyzer, Autothrusters, R5-P9 (40)

Bandit Squadron- (12)

This is the squad I was talking about when I beat the TLTs. It's about as hard of a counter to them as you can get. I even flew terribly and basically handed my opponent both the bandit and Poe on a silver plate, but Corran was still able to do his thing and pull out the win.

Dual Shadowcaster with K4 and Fearlessness can do it too. Tested Ketsu and Asajj vs 4 TLT Thugs. I played thugs. I haven't played it before, so of course this is probably not true for a hardcore Thug-Lyfe player. I don't consider myself all that bad, but practice is key with almost any list.

It's all about approach. First game, I tried range controlling, so he wouldn't get R1. I K-turned them towards him, so that I could run after the first engage. He got the initial encounter perfect, and only one in range of him. The thug got tractor beamed onto a rock, and the other out of range. He did that the following turn meant that there were only 3 left when they all had range on the casters. That wasn't enough.

Second game we tried jousting. he took out a thug each turn, on the first two turns. Game was lost when I didn't get to fire with all 4 thugs on initial engage.

Range control is really the key. If you can somehow combo that with an alphastrike to get a thug off the board before it fires, good! Tractor beams could also be valuable, if you can make him approach you through the asteroid field.

Things that TLTs really hate include:

- Autothrusters

- Sensor jammer

Therefore if you're building specifically to shut them down, double IGs with SJ aren't a bad call. For extra fun you can include tractor beams, and chuck one onto a rock whenever the opportunity arises.

Soontir+Inquisitor+Palpshuttle

Just flip the table and move on.

How would we know what you find enjoyable to play?

Do you prefer, or is your collection strongest in, a specific faction?

all you need is

Guri (30)
Lone Wolf (2)
Sensor Jammer (4)
Autothrusters (2)

Half the time you wont even need to roll defences dice

If you feel you like you need more ships then fill in the 61 points with what ever you like Palob with Ion can be a good filler and can send your opponent nuts

If you have 5 Z95s and want to be a troll

What beats a 4 TLT player? Refusing to play them.

It's a recreational activity, why waste it playing against quad TLT?

Failing that a mini shredder will solve the TLT problem for good.

Thats assuming you have a choice of players. Otherwise just play the multiple things that beat quad-TLT with no contest and make them reconsider their list choice. You can already find them all over this thread. Poe Dameron with Autothrusters and R2-D2 is also rather brutal on them. Easiest list would be Guri, Fenn Rau and Manaroo all Mindlinked, though.

Imo this list is better with Palob, but I still want to try it out first to be sure … and well against quad-TLT Fenn Rau is anyway a lot better than Palob with a TLT ^_^

Makes me wonder. Why is that list so unfun to play against? I love tricky lists and TLTs are indeed a challenge to fly against as you need very carefully manage range against them while focusing them down. I mean sure, quad TLTs can put you pretty hard out of your comfort zone, but so can palp aces, defenders, Dangeroo or BBBBZ …

I am inclined to agree, but for reeducating someone only playing quad-TLT I'd say double Autothrusters are critical.

Brobots make 4xTLT look like chumps.

Any ordnance alpha strike, either with LRS or Chimps, eat those fat 1AGI ships fast and easy.

Green squadron pilots with titile, refit, AT, PTL, Wired

Let him cry :D

Hammers ...

PS4+ TIE Bombers with Homing Missiles.

5x Green Squadron A-wing with Autothrusters & Crack Shot.

Poe and Brobots already mentioned.

Palp 'Ceptors with Carnor and Soontir.

Basically ... things with autothrusters, lots of evade dice, the ability to boost into the range 1 bubble, the ability to put out lots of damage quickly, or preferrably all of the above.

Which reminds me of a funny fact. I occasionally test new squadron on Squad Benchmark, and the only list which the AI is flying quite competently is the 4 TLT Y-Wings..

I think it is telling a lot ;)

It is telling a lot about your skill with TLTs because in all honesty the AI is crap with quad TLTs. ^_°

Honestly, almost anything can beat 4 TLTs.

I had to double check whether this thread had been originally posted last year. Oh how the meta has gone backwards.

Triple U-boats will still bash those Y-wings nicely :)

Homing missile for a AGI1, no Evade action Y-wing? I'd stay on proton torps, or even Cluster missiles.
