I'd expect the Orcs and Dwarves to come if the game takes off, four factions is very light for a wargame where it's possible to only collect a single faction. Although when the Orcs do come I'll have to collect them on top of the Uthuk Y'llan and Waiqar factions.

Star Wars Armada and Star Wars X-Wing are two of the best selling table top miniatures war games. Yes, they're ships and not skellingtons with swords, but they're consistently successful with 2 and 3 factions, respectively. Not every table top wargame has to be like Warhammer 40k with it's 30+ factions. It seems like 4-5 factions is the average for quite a few games. I started Wrath of Kings recently and it has 5 factions.

True but Star Wars is Star Wars, i would say if those games wouldn't be Star Wars games they would be less succesfull, and the Terrinoth setting is not as known as Star Wars or the Warhammer settings.

Absolutely true. BUT... I think people show up for the Star Wars. They keep playing week after week because the games are good. I've seen other Star Wars games where people bought in, realized the game was mediocre and then let it sit on the shelf. Actually, The Phantom Menace movie is a good example. It did well in the box office, but it's not like people rewatch it every couple of months because it was so good.

That's true too, if a game is bad not even a good license will save it but a good license can give you game a good start, as said if they were Space Dogfigt the Game and Capital Spaceship Battle the Game im quite sure the sales and players would be less even if the rules were great.

But i agree with you you don't need that many factions, but for a game like Runewars it wouldn't hurt to have more than 2 factions, doesn't nee to be 10+ but 4 or 6 would be good. They then could perhaps later do subfaction which changes which unit you can take like Infinity does.

We DO have 4 factions. The core set and initial wave is just covering two. We have Daqan Lords and Waiqar the Undying in the core set and initial wave. We'll then have Latari Elves and (gonna spell this wrong) Ulthuk Yulani at some point sooner than later. One of the Daqan Lords cards that has been spoiled actually let's you include a Latari Elves faction unit in your army, so we have proof that mixed faction armies are a possibility.

Oh i know it's four catcions already posted on the topic about poster showing the four factions and the topic about Kari Wraithstalker, it's just we don't know yet when they come out so Runewars will release with two factions and that was what i was talking about, yes it what not really clear and then i meant we don't need countless factions the four we know or two more would be enough in my opinion.

I'm quite sure we will get the other two factions soon after the game releases.

Yeah that's Kari, the initial hero for daqan.

Also, htere are some hints that there is a daqan traitor, which I think means that we'll have a similar hero for the undying

That is probably Waiqar the Betrayer.

And Waiqar is the head honcho. I sort of doubt we'll see him as a model. I think you, as the player, are supposed to be Waiqar, ordering your troops. That's how I felt with the board game. But maybe they'll switch it up this time.

It wouldn't be the first time a game put the big cheese of a faction in model form, WFB (Karl Franz on his blasted griffon?) did it all the time, and the in 40k several different factions leaders are present to field.

I'm not sure we'll see a Waiqar the Betrayer miniature for a long time, however, I think that's what is causing the confusion or rumours over the Daqan Traitor character. I'd definitely expect to see a Waiqar figure that could bring in some Uthuk Y'llan unit though.

Updated main post with Friday's news. So far, everything is as it was predicted EXCEPT one major change. The H eroes, Infantry, and Large Bases all have the same Q2 2017 release date as the previously announced Archers/Calvary / Command Units. This could potentially mean that we are going to see an accelerated release schedule to get the first 4 armies featured in the launch poster out this year. I think that would be very aggressive, but it is possible that we see something like an Elves and Uthuk Starter in Q3, with Wave 1s similar to the Daqan/Waiquar Wave 1s in Q4. That would be a pleasant surprise (and very aggressive commitment on FFGs part).

If it does, indeed, happen that way, I don't think anyone could reasonably question FFG's commitment to this product's launch. Bad news is we really don't have any new real leads on anything other than Latari and Uthuk are coming b/c of the poster. We might be pretty dry on new announcements until GenCon.

This aggressive release schedule will be great for those here who won't play a game with only two armies bit will be hard on my wallet as I will want to play both Waiqar and Latari.

Waiqar is indeed called 'the Betrayer', amongst other things, but that refers to him betraying his wizard master and killing him for control of a magical artifact that was later split into the Dragon Runes. That betrayal was also the event that offered him his necromantic powers. There is no official timeline or calendar for Terrinoth AFAIK, but it is strongly implied in the Runewars manual and other material that Waiqar's betrayal took place many years ago, if not several generations, what with him being now immortal and the creation of the Dragon Runes and several large conflicts happening between it and what is considered present day.

I would assume any reference to a traitor within the Daqan Lords would be a nod to Zachareth, the baron of Carthridge, who was revealed to be an evil sorcerer and full on moustache-twirling villain in the events of 'The Shadow Rune', the original Descent 2 campaign.

Regardless, I doubt we will ever see Waiqar himself as a miniature. Think of him more like Sauron during the events of Lord of the Rings.

I am however looking forward to FFG transplanting more of the various established Terrinoth characters into RWM, like Lord Fabulous Moustache, Vorakesh and Ardus. It does wonders for world building and makes people that played with those characters instantly invested into them, unlike completely new characters like Kari. I still want to know what her deal is and why elite Citadel troops are seemingly following the orders of a punk-rock chick dressed in a potato sack.

I want Varikas the Dead. A hero in Descent but evil alignment in Runewars and would fit the Waiqar faction.

Well I think the known expansions all releasing together was something they pretty much had to do and it reminds me of the armada wave 3/4. I'm glad they did it.

I hope that when Uthuk/Latari release they get a core set (or army packs) with their wave `1 at the same time. Otherwise, those factions will just feel incomplete to me until they do. Let's imagine that we're on wave 3 or so of daqan and waiqar a year from now. If at that point they release a new faction or two, I wouldn't expect them to release with an equivalent 3 waves. I would like a full wave though rather than the 'half wave' we're getting with our current core set only release. I mostly just want this so the new factions can have a little depth and variety to them.

Updated original post with all new information to date.

Am I off in thinking we may see half of wave 1 in June, the other half around august? (Gencon)? Then maybe latari in October, uthuk maybe November/December?

My guess is Latari and Uthuk at the same time.

Add the mysterious Waiqar vampire hero seen in the Army Painter guide!

I would bet good money latari and uthuk models are in the case at gencon, maybe even available for early sale, and then widely available by Christmas. It just seems like a good timeline for the first year.

Having them sold at GenCon would be ... frustraciting. On the one hand, having Uthuk out by mid-year is awesome. But then, I won't be at GenCon, so I hate the thought of waiting until December while other people are playing with Uthuk. It's bad enough to miss the launch day, behind your faction's pseudo-release is just putting salt in the wound. Still, I hope these will come out sooner rather than later.

I think this year may have to be the year I definately get myself back to GenCon for just Saturday. I just hope any Runewars exclusive sales aren't completely sold out by then, or that they are still letting us demo some new units or something.
