Some high-res X-Wing snapshots

By xanderf, in X-Wing

So I tinker around with photography a very little bit, and gaming tends to be my favorite topic, so...over the years, I've taken some X-Wing shots of varying quality. Generally I find them fun to use as PC desktop backgrounds/wallpapers, and they run pretty high resolution (3k x 2k), so on the off chance anyone else would find them interesting...here ya go!

I definitely appreciate BGG thumbs on the image if you do like them, thanks!

Awesome shots!

3000x2000 that still isn't "high" resolution for a camera. It's only 6 MP which is nothing these days even if you're just using some of those cell phones.

I'd say high resolution would be something more that 20 MP although I'll fully admit that all of that resolution is pretty much wasted on most video screens and even a lot of printed works.

This is a fair point - however, as you note, it's about as high as you'll usually see useful on a PC monitor or most printed work. I mean, printing at 300 pixels an inch, these are still 11" x 7", which is...ridiculous, honestly.

So - sure, not "REALLY high resolution" - but a darn sight higher than most pics of the game I've seen on the web! So, of course, one of the reasons I started taking my own higher-resolution shots - to have 'not blurry' desktop backgrounds on a high-res monitor...

Awesome shots!

Thanks!

As I've submitted a handful of these to the BoardGameGeek photo contests, I've kept the post-processing touchups to the bare minimum - mostly just auto-filling out something that dropped into the frame that I didn't want; or doing color-correcting to adjust for the lighting at store/location I was at, when I grabbed the shot.

And, of course, the models are all unpainted - "as they come from FFG!" I really just like showing off...well...how cool the game looks!

Just giving grief from one photo enthusiast to another. I shoot using a couple of Canons running at 12 and 18 MP and know that the files you can get from them are already big enough to be a pain to mail/send somewhere and that my 24" monitor isn't nearly big enough to view them at full scale.

Nice shots! I really like the lighting in most of these. It feels very cinematic.

My favorite is the ARC-170 one, but I really like the Gozantis and the Ghost shot. Very nice work.

Crap, I was only able to thumb two - had already thumbed the rest :D

Great images indeed!

Loving the twin carriers. I really want to take a "carrier group" for my next epic game.

WOOHOO! - thanks!

None of these had appeared on that top page of my 'most thumbed' pics, yet , leaving that page woefully under-representing Star Wars (and with some very odd choices!)

Looking a lot better, now, thx!

pfft people commentating its not the highest quality.

I really dont get why resolution beyond HD is even a thing except for purposes of zooming in w/o losing detail. Our eyes cant see much better than that anyway.

Awesome shots btw

Okay, I'm jealous.

Now I have to try that.

****, with a bit of photoshop work and a second picture without the ships it'd be dead easy to remove the pegs in pics 2, 3, and 5 - but that sort of thing has to be planned beforehand because if the camera angle is even slightly different it becomes much harder.

They're beautiful shots, and I especially love how #2 has the light source from nearly the same point as on the planet background... it's just that I always get a little sad when I look at something and go, "Darnit. That would have been perfect for X technique."

You'd actually be surprised how well Photoshop's "contextual fill" works on those pegs. I did do a version of the pic where I effectively brushed the pegs out, and it looks...decent. I guess the thing is that they still just look so much like little models, rather than a full-scale scene, that I didn't bother really keeping that version.

No "real" complaints although some people, often salesmen, would have you believe that more MP/resolution is ALWAYS better. If you're looking at it on a screen then I'll certainly agree that things over HD can provide little value for huge size increase. If you're looking at physical prints then I'll say that resolution may be more likely to make a difference although it depends on the print size and the sources you are comparing. I have two 4x6 prints of the same picture from the same place but one was copied from my FB account (slow internet but needed it ordered NOW) and the other downloaded later from the PC; while not obvious at a distance when you get the prints in hand the differences in them are clear.

These are beautiful shots. As for using photoshop or something else to ruin them I say don't. Make the picture great to start with and don't waste you time trying to fix things to make them unnatural such as removing the pegs just because you could.

FB does lots of other horrible things to your images, on top of reducing resolution. Mostly, they don't care about image quality at all and leave horrible compression fragments everywhere. Makes storage cheaper.

I use Ello for my photography. They care about quality. And Flickr, they care a bit more than Facebook.

One of the reasons I like posting pics to BGG - they don't do anything to reduce their quality at all!

(Obviously only works for game pics, though)
