I'll Show You the Dark Side

By SmartCookie, in X-Wing Rules Questions

OK, I'm not getting this. Several podcasts/youtubers are hating Kylo Ren the pilot as you must assign I'll Show You the Dark Side to the attacker as they say the crit card on it is discarded.

As I read the card the first time someone shoots you you assign the attacker the Kylo head token, find a Blinded Pilot card and put on the condition card.

Now, assume we don't get a crit on the ship and next turn another enemy shoots me, the Kylo head token is moved but as the condition card is already in play and has a card on it the Blinded Pilot card stays put and would now dealt to the new attacker.

Am I right or what am I missing?

You're right about how it works and it sounds like the podcasters got it wrong. I think a lot of time those guys are looking at the stuff from the previews for the first time right as they are about to start recording.

Your opponent can control to some extent which of their ships get the condition from the Kylo Ren pilot ability because the assignment of the condition is mandatory. They don't have the ability to mill through your Pilot Crits and make it useless because the condition only has you assign a card if there is not one already assigned.

It seems like Kylo's ability is there to make the "Shoot the Palp Shuttle First" strategy hurt a bit more than it is to actually be assigning the condition in a more offensive fashion.

the card straight up says before all the "search for a card" hubub: "if it is not already in play" - so if it was already on the table, its already in play. Changing who its on does not remove it from play and put it back into play.

Also i never noticed the Kylo pilot doesnt give you the option to not assign the card again. Thats...just plain stupid.

Against most lists it is just going to make people hold off on taking out the shuttle or split their fire. As an ability to screw with your opponent's targeting priority I don't think having it mandatory is much of a problem. If you are looking to assign the condition offensively, you are much better off with the crew than you would be with an optional version of the pilot.

Having it be mandatory makes Palpatine on Kylo Ren a bit weaker of a combo than it would otherwise have been. I can't help but think that was done on purpose.

Also note that you search the deck for a Damage card with the Pilot trait, not specifically the Blinded Pilot card, (unless of course that's the Pilot trait card you wish to use).

No, I'm sure this was to imply that there is no chance you would search for something else :P

Damaged Cockpit is the other obvious one you might want to throw. Or Injured Pilot if they're using the old deck.

Damaged Cockpit will be better than Blinded Pilot in many cases. Stunned Pilot could also be kind of nice, especially if you are good at setting up blocks. The only real stinker is Shaken Pilot.

damaged cockpit > blinded pilot against quite a few targets.

Dengaroo being one, since he wont ever get rid of it.

Damaged Cockpit can't be removed anyway. That's the other reason it's so good. Drop Damaged Cockpit on an arcdodger and they're toast.

Unless you are shooting at Ryad.

Question, from this. I know that when a crit damage is SUFFERED, even against a shield, Kylo Ren condition will proc the card and that ship will suffer the Pilot trait card. Does that card count against the hull value of the ship? Or is it just assigned and not counted against the ships hull until you get through the shields with other damage cards? I'd be quite interesting for a Crit to cause both a shield token AND deal a damage card against it's hull without going through all shields yet.

The shield token isn't lost, because the IWSYTDS crit is applied instead of suffering a critical damage. But yes, that card does count against hull.
