Bending the "fly what you know" truism.

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

Fat han and Jake made top 16 at worlds. I think you should be fine if you know your list and what to expect from your opponents list.

As a side note, the 3xxx7 list I was considering looks like...

Ryad-VI, x7

Vessery-adaptability,x7

Stele-crackshot,x7

I like matching p.s. for altering the deal. And 7 gets above all the 6 p.s. cluttering up the sky.

Eh... bending. Right. I must say I am heading to a Store Championship in less then two weeks. I know I want to fly Poe Dameron PS9 with something but I am hardly able to try out a new list. I will probably go with Rey and Millenium Falcon. The thing is, I have never played YT-1300 before... It's gonna be strange and funny.

Toolbox list is credited to a nice fella in Italy I met on vassal,i don't think it has a name or anything.

Ya as much as I wish it wasn't so, I think you are going to need to drop Guri if this list is going to have any chance to be truly competitive. Something as simple as 2 autoblaster Ys might even prove more valuable.

But if I'm being TOTALLY honest, I think you are simply better off with the X7 Defenders. They are extremely forgiving, and under costed. Even if you haven't had a ton of table time with them, they will still prove a better option over 98% of your build options.

I have extensively flown that exact Guri build. Guri is lacking, but she is definitely better than duel auto-blaster Y-wings.

Guri is so fun to fly as you well know. So don't change that list & have fun :)

Sure, but Palob and the Party Bus have mean abilities and are scary. This list is begging for a third scary ship in order to seal the deal on weakened foes. Guri is great in her own way, but if the Party Bus puts a PS6 Defender at 1 Hull and then Guri can't seal the deal because she's loaded up with defensive mods, she's not really helping this list in the way this list wants to be helped, right?

With 40pts remaining, we can do 1 ABT Y-Wing for extra coverage vs aces and then one Mangler Scyk to push crits through against lists with less agility and more meat. That PS2 Y-Wing could also act as speed control for the Party Bus.

Then, as previously discussed, we could do PtL Fenn or Teroch, both are solid (although Fenn probably has the most game against the most lists).

There's also the option of a second large base ship:

Contracted Scout (25)
Fearlessness (1)
R4 Agromech (2)
Punishing One (12)
or
Asajj Ventress (37)
Fearlessness (1)
Gyroscopic Targeting (2)

I know...leaving the crew slots open feels like a cardinal sin, and they're not as action efficient as you generally want those ships to be, but they are scary. Enemies will work hard to avoid bumping and landing in their primary arcs at range 1, while you zoom forward with impunity. These ships can also slow down enemies who might otherwise rush to try and get behind the Party Bus or into R1 of Palob.

If you're going to make a bloodthirsty list, don't hedge by adding one defensive ship into the mix. Be bold, be fearless.

I personally am not going to get bent out of shape if I don't do well.if you are of a similar mindset then there is almost no better place to try a new list than at a large tournament.

You'll play a bunch of games against a bunch of various squads.

Sounds like a good benchmark to me.

I'm not sure I get the Guri-aggro here. The way I see it, guri plays it really aggressivly in this list and goes in for range 1 first round of combat, hopefully blocking something and lining up shots on something else. She target locks if able and gets a free focus. Now she is truly doing damage and your opponent is left with a difficult choice of whom to fire upon, r1 Guri with all the defesive tech, or the more potent and easier targets in the back row.

the free focus and the predator rerolls have typically gotten my enough damage output from her.

Ive never actually seen a trip defender list in action. I wonder what they look like. I am certain not at all like the test list I threw together above.

Heres my thoughts so far.....run the toolkit, but update it for the modern era.

good advice above KDUBB, after looking closer at what to with the guri thing, it looks like you can get a fenn rau at like 10 points cheaper to do the same endgame role and have a ton of spare points for more goodies.

ill do another test run tomorow with this arrangement.

still cant find a triple defender list that looks any good. so ill have to use my made up one

I think that "play what you know" is an oversimplification, honestly. I'm with CBM on Decimators. We fly different builds, but it's still a ship that I'm comfortable with, and I'm (reasonably) known in my area for being a fairly clutch Deci pilot. But for me, part of being good with it is being confident enough to know how to arc dodge with it (yes, I'm serious), how to fly it using the three biggest rocks I can put on the table, and also how to fly my ace wingman (wingperson).

So flying it often is one thing, but flying it well is something else. In the end though, when you start sweating and forgetting things under stress, you're less likely to forget things that you've played dozens of times than something that is relatively new.

Unless you really need PS6 for something, try switching Adaptability out for Trick Shot. It puts Palob and Guri both at PS5 allowing you to move or shoot in whichever order is most advantageous that round. I seem to take enough shots through rocks with my TLTs that the extra red die comes in handy.

Without giving too much away, what is your list make up? Palp anything is pretty forgiving, so maybe you can throw what you know with that.

With the return of TLT's Guri is very solid. I have more or less soloed lists at a store champs to win it. She only realy struggles against high ps aces like Sontir and you have the party bus for that.

I am trying out a Homer Crack Bossk, PTL Rau with a Vector thrusters binaryre pirate blocker. Bossk can consistently get 5 hits through with the missile, which should be enough to kill an /x7, if Rau has damaged it. If they are palping, leaves one ace to kill. Rau is good enough to clean up what's left and hopefully your blocker Z 95 helps keep things away from your YV 666 long enough to get your missile off.

Sigh....

If you can't beat em..join em.

I've tried with guri and with fenn rau plus more tools.

And I'm getting consistently scrubbed by 3x7.

Still...its versus myself and I have been purposely exploiting the weakness in my toolbox list.

I don't know...it's a bit disappointing.

I'll probably just take 3 defenders and see what happens.

This may sound nuts but like...have you tried VI on Guri? With all the PS5 and PS6 Defenders going around, plus the popularity of Asajj Ventress and the occasional Brobot, it might not be as crazy a notion as it once was.

Maybe something like this, with 3 points left to play around with?

I was just taking a dinner break to clear my head and think about changing guris loadout and maybe keeping her.

Comparing a kitted fenn rau to a kitted guri is just making me mad at guri. Ha!

But...she's hot...I want her in the list. Somehow....

I kind of want to suggest flying the Party Bus, Palob, and a Defender, but I think that might be too many points (or something).

Ooooohhh if only...ha!

I flew this last night, and it did gross things.

Need to test it more, but so far it's pretty **** solid. Unholy action economy, and straight up melts faces. It might have trouble with a 5+ ship list, but barring that, it handles other three ship lists with grace.

Use manaroo as a focus and TL battery and as a blocker. Flank with the interceptors. Having EU on TBC makes up for his bugger dial, and the mindlink and TL passing ability of Roo makes his 5 dice point blanks nearly unstoppable. Same with Rau, basically. I use Roo to feed whichever one needs a TL if they got blocked, everybody gets at least one focus. Know your opponents dials, and Fenn and TBC can unload 10 hits into a single target at PS9. Once opponents start sweating that firepower is when Manaroo does a 3-hop over those that she blocked and drops the cargo poop right on them. Welcome to stressville.
