Rebel "Fake Defenders"

By Magnus Grendel, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Just a random thought after someone mentioned building Braylen Stramm as a pure combatant: You can actually make repeated K-turning Rebels, too; would they potentially be able to cope? - in their case with much improved red dice rather than green dice.

  • Lothal Rebel - Fire Control System, Hera Syndulla, Gunner
  • Hobbie Klivian - Targeting Astromech, Integrated Astromech
  • Braylen Stramm - Alliance Overhaul, Plasma Torpedoes, Chopper, Targeting Astromech, Guidance Chips

Braylen only works half the time

which is to say, about infinetly fewer times than you'd want him to (the ideal is "all of the time")

he's a pretty crap "pure combatant" for that reason, but an amazing stressmule because his ability doesn't really matter next to the guaranteed stress he's dishing out (but it could be a nice bonus on occasion)

not to mention the whole aux arc thing makes k-turning ARCs incredible superfluous in most games. Still only done it four times since I got mine from gencon

Porkins instead of Braylen, perhaps?

Hmmm, maybe lose Plasmas on Braylen and Gunner on Lothal, then Braylen can have Finn. That is incentive to Kturn, so you get a TL, and reroll that extra Finn dice for a kturn 4 attack Arc (3 from back with a crit). That goes with a kturning 4 attack lothal, who gets Ezra crew to push crits through. If anything, it should be fun!

Nien Nunb with Pattern Analyzer seems like a good candidate for a Rebel "fake Defender" list.

Porkins is also a nice idea (bugger, It's hard to believe I just said that....) - he is a bit more expensive, but with a targeting astromech you've got full modifiers at the risk of a point of damage every 2-3 times you K-turn.

Which, if you're using chopper, is pretty much the same rate Braylen does - but Porkins can, like Hobbie, back-to-back K-turn, which you need the option for if you want to hang on to Ryad's coat-tails.

you are more fragile than an ARC-170, though you do have an extra point and an EPT to play with - crack shot on a target lock/focus-ed attack might not be a bad call for punching through defenders's defences (or at least forcing them to spend tokens).

I don't see Gunner on the Lothal triggering very often and I feel those points could probably be better spent elsewhere.

Predator for Jek might be good. That way you don't need the targeting astromech....and can take R5-D8 as insurance if his ability starts letting you down.

Alternatively, Ezra might be a good call for the Lothal Rebel. If you're going to be stressed anyway....
