Nien build and his wingmen?

By Ronu, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I was looking at some ideas on this Nien build.

Nien Nunb; Stay on Target, Targeting Astromech, Pattern Analyzer, and eithe AT or VT.

The Ability to adjust as needed, get the free target lock, take a boost or Barrel Roll action as needed to get into range one to shred stress seems great for action economy while being a nasty threat.

Thoughts on Nien? Who or what to pair this with?

PS9 Poe + R5P9 + PTL + PA + AT + Black One = 44pts

GSP + Crackshot + Adaptability = 18pts

2pt initiative 1pt initiative (edit)

Interesting thoughts

2pt initiative

Very cool indeed. With Nien Nunb totalling 37 points, it reaches 99 point though, so a 1 point initiative. The Green Squadron Pilot also has Chardaan Refit obviously. I think I will try that build, with Vectored Thrusters on Nien.

oh, ya, 1pt initiative. Initially in my head I was going with Proto with Vector Thrusters for a super blocker, then changed it to GSP with crack.

I have been running this for a week now.

Numb: PTL, R3-A2, Pattern Analyzer, VT's, Black one

Biggs: R2-F2, IA

Dutch: R3 Astromech, TLT, VT's.

It's not super competitive. But it's fun to fly. Dutch helps Biggs actually hit. R3 helps after Biggs is dead. Numb just flys around getting rid of Enemy TL's and stressing people out while hopefully not being stressed himself. The Analyzer helps when he K's or T-turns so he can boost or barrel rolls into range one then receives a stress and removes it.

I am also hoping to give Nien a test flight this weekend but I was looing at this:

Nien

Snap Shot

R3A2

Pattern analizer

Integrated

Anyone tried this yet, wondering if its a one trick pony and if be better off with ptl.

I do like the idea of snap shot and R3-A2. I might take VT's so you can get into other positions to maximize the snap shot action.

I like the Blue Squadron idea.

Nien, PTL, Targeting Astromech, AT, Primed Thrusters

Snap Wexley, Adaptability, AT, Primed Thrusters

Jess Pava, M9-G8, AT, Pattern Analyzer

Jess maintains a TL on Snap allowing him to modify his attack. Nien's TL is covered by his Targeting Astro, Jess can modify her own in formation. They can all Tallon Roll + Boost (such a useful thing o be able to do) and they can all modify dice after doing red maneouvres.

Even better if you can proc Nien's ability off a T-roll.

I ran a Nien/Rey list last night with Nien kitted out with Snap Shot, R3A2, Primed Thrusters, Vectored Thrusters, and Black One (plus seismic torps, 'cause I have some free points).

The Snap Shot/R3A2 shenanigans were fun ... triple stressing a Fenn Rau, whacking a Brobot with Stress and Snap Shot, and ditching TLs. However, he was target #1 and died pretty quickly each round, so spending 37 (or 39 in my case) points on him seems too much. If I were to run StressSnapNien again, I'd do it with just Snap Shot, R2A2, and Integrated Astromech at 33 points (maybe with Primed Thrusters at 34). It would be in a different list, though.

I like the Blue Squadron idea.

I get the idea behind targeting astromech on Nien. But is that really the best? He only has 3 moves that are Red. And with PTL. If you don't get within 1 you won't lose that stress so you can't do a red move the following turn. Just seems counter productive, unless I am missing something.

I never said it was the best, just that I like it... ;-)

Yeah TA is definitely a bit situational, no arguments there. Mainly it's there because I love the utility of the T-roll but hate the fact that it more often than not you're shooting unmodified afterwards - so it makes for great positioning but it's hard to capitalise on. I've always been a fan of the targetting astromech, it's a great little utility - but since it's situational and not universally useful then it usually gets left on the bench. Basically, it's there to proc off the T-roll.

I'm actually wondering if it might be better to shift the droid to Wexley and have Pava target lock Nien, with PTL giving Nien more options than Wexley has, especially if Nien lands at R1.

So Ran Nein with, Poe and a Z actually.

First match saw A TLT Y, Kavil with PTL and an Ion Turret and a CD Vet. As expected was a complete mismatch and was over quickly.

Second Match was vs Fenn, Teroch and Kad. Fenn had PTL and SD, Kad and Teroch were VI and SD.

Much tighter. The extra utility of Nien with th Targeting Astromech and SoT is bonkers takes a bit to get right but solid pairing. Black one keeping ordinance in check is also big took patients and some lucky dice rolls but was able to pull out a victory without losing a ship both games.
