77-Plus - what might that be?

By Managarmr, in X-Wing

From the 2017 System Open Series

"The eight Open main tournament winners will meet at the Coruscant Invitational, held at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida April 13-16! These eight competitors will play a brand new variant called 77-Plus, created in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the debut of Star Wars in 1977. The champion also gets the opportunity to provide input to and cooperate with the X-Wing developers on the design of a future upgrade card!

Stay tuned for more information about the 77-Plus variant and the Coruscant Invitational!"

What might that format be -

77pts plus X?

Or has to include OT ships?

let the speculations begin!

My theory: 77 points of predetermined list for each faction, using only generic pilots, voted on by the community, plus 33 more points determined by the player themselves.

For example, a Rebels list in 77+ might be 2x prototype pilots, 1x Rookie pilot, and 1x Blue Squadron pilot at 77 points, then 33 points of the player's choosing.

You have to be 77 or older to compete?

People that saw Star Wars in its original theatrical release get to spend 77 extra points on their squad?

Since star wars was released in '77, maybe its actually episode 4 ships and on? Could be weird, or they may be trying a different format like MTG's "vintage" vs "modern", something like that. Whatever it is I can't wait to try it out!

I think it is going to be 77 points must be spent on ships from the original trilogy, with the rest able to be spent on anything else.

"Even if you cannot attend a System Open event, you can still get in on the action! Throughout the System Open Series, everyone will be able to contribute and vote to influence portions of the squadrons flown at the Coruscant Invitational. Stay tuned for articles detailing the voting process and asking for your influence."

So people will have the opportunity to influence the squads which have to be flown in Coruscant

Hmmmm ... me thinks this math is suspect.

Assuming you meant 23 points of the player's choosing to total a 100 ?

No reason it has to be 100 points if they're doing a special format.

I would bet that it is 77 points chosen by vote and 73 of the players choice. Then they up standard tournament lists to 150 to match afterwards. I bet FFG is not thrilled my the trend towards 2 ship lists. That means people need fewer ships.

You have to compete wearing clothing in fashion in 1977?

Or you get to pick 77 points and add the 23-point thing determined by the Crowd?

You have to be 77 or older to compete?

"...back in my day we flew TIE Swarms, and Dutch and Garvin. DEAAAAAAAAAAATH!"

Given that the 'two ship lists' are generally one or two large ships (and two large ships are worth the same as four small ships) I doubt they mind.

Upping the standard game to 150 points would be interesting. It would be a big problem for arc dodgers (like squints and phantoms) compared to elusive bruisers like x7 defenders, though; as you start to see some of the elements of epic come through.

If the standard point totals for x-wing went up to 150, I would quit. I like how fast a 100 point game can go and also the game has been balanced with 100 points in mind.

Whatever it is, I'm sure it won't affect the standard game.

Could be a multiplayer format. Each player gets 77 points and either teams of 2 go at it, or it's just an FFA-melee.

Wowza, I forgot they announced an upcoming new format!

What does the plus mean? It could mean almost anything. April isn't that far away :)

Maybe you are given 77 points of ships chosen by either FFG or the community and you can fill the 23 points with whatever upgrades you want on those ships.

77 plus.

A really big shirt.

Or maybe the pick a ship and upgrades for each faction, and you get 77 points to round out the list?

77 points of whatever you want, plus this Boaty McBoatface that the internet picked out for your faction.

I get the feeling that this format WILL NOT have lists that add up to 100 points. It could be they are testing 120 point list format as preparation for the eventual switch that will help improve the meta.

My bet is that you'll have to take 77 points minimum of actual ships, limiting upgrade cards to a maximum of 23 points. That would also hugely change the meta.

Would make sense when you consider that 4x TLT cost 24 points

These are very good observations. Best guess yet!

- Defenders would mostly be unaffected though :(

- Would bring back TIE swarm ?

- Large ships are affected most :)

- Penalizes expensive upgrades : HLC, Munitions, Palpatine, Punishing One, Gunner, Finn, Heavy Scyk

- Mindlink lists aren't affected much :)

The meta might become > 50% Defenders & Mindlink. It could only be a niche format.

I'll guess it means you have to use a Blacksun AEG-77 Vigo + whatever else you want in your list.
