Out of curiosity, what lists beat you in Swiss Para? And what interesting matchups did you have that you won?

BBYZZ just won the Boise Idaho Regional. There is hope after all.

Congrats Blair!

Runner up was Trevor with Omega, Vess, Palp.

Runner up was William (Travis) Wooldridge "Tarvis" wih Juke Vessery, OL + Shield and Palp+SensorJammer

Whoops...I had the correct name in mind...not sure why I typed Trevor...my apologies. Unfortunate, especially since I faced William (Travis) in the Vancouver Regional Finals.

"Use the Force" Regionals in Poland (107 players) has been won by Parattanni list.

Winner (me):

Fenn Rau + Title, Autothrusters, Attanni

Asajj + Latts Razzi, Attanni

Manaroo + Attanni

Congratulations! As the inventor of the list you definitely did better with it than me!

Ah...., so that's where the name of the list came from.

Out of curiosity, what lists beat you in Swiss Para? And what interesting matchups did you have that you won?

2. Lost to Commonwealth Defenders. 66:72. Tons of bad luck here. I loaded Fenn's 5 diceds onto Ryad like 4 times and blanked almost all:(

3. Win against double Falcon list (Chewbacca and Rebel Sympathizer both with Gunner and Chewy with Hot-shot Co-pilot. Very interesting list, abke to kill Fenn quickly, but I was able to stick 3 focuses of him almost all the time and avoid of being shot by 2 Falcons at once. I suspect this list to be nightmare in hands of skilled opponent.

4. Win against 2 Defenders and Omega Leader

5. Win against Ketsu and Boba Fett. Game recorded will be on Legion YT channel.

6. Top32 against 3x crack shot Defenders. Close match. Killed one in exchange of half Asajj.

7. Top16 against clubmate ("Dydu" with scum aces - PTL Fenn, VI Old Teroch, Zuckuss). I outsmarted opponent during initial engagement and was able to kill Fenn quickly. I was able to win despite hilarious miastake flying 4fwd in wrong direction :D . I had a flu all weekend, so my mind was clouded all the time and I forgot what direction Asajj is facing :) Lucky she stayed on the board ;) . Game is recorded will be on our YT channel.

8. Top8 against double arcs and Biggs. I masterfully outmaneuvered my opponent. Exchanged Biggs for one shield, then stress Arc for couple more, and then opponent conceded seeing me running out of Nora playing on time :) . Game recorded.

9. Top4 against "Szenq" - player I've lost to in top8 of other Polish Regionals month ago after unbelievable streak of green rolls. Revenge time! List: bumpmaster + 3x TLT. Interestingly we followed exactly the same opening, but this time with average rolls so it was mine game to loose all the time, I and didn't let victory slip out of my hands.

10.Final against Jan Swirski - Czech/Slovakia National Champion with Miranda TLT+bombs, HWK TLT, Moldy Crow and Chewbacca, TLT y-wing. I perfectly flown in first rounds being able to shoot at y-wing with 3 of my ships staying out of range of HWK and Miranda. Then Miranda missed Fenn with Conner Net by 1mm. Then I charged too aggressively to kill HWK at rng1. I've killed but I got hit by 2 ion bombs in a row and Asajj flown out of the board. Luckily I managed to triple stress Mirnada during a process and Fenn+Manaroo finished her. Super close match.

We will try to post recorded matches on YT as soon as possible, but one film takes a week to finish :(

Austin just finished.

Daniel C. Won with:

Mindlinked 3x Gand Findsman and Mindlinked Leeachos

Runer up was Mark Fletcher (Sable Gryphon) with his worlds list:

3x Warden with Cluster Mines

Mind blown. Great game.
What else on those G1-As? I would assume FCS, the points fit.
A reddit post has two G1-As with FCS, one with the title, and thread tracers and chips on Kaato.

G-1A Starfighter -- Gand Findsman 25

Attanni Mindlink 1

Fire-Control System 2

Good times from Austin Regional! My first time making a top 16 cut.

Out of curiosity, is this a Warden Miranda build? A buddy of mine runs a similar setup and does very well with it!

I really hope the Scum & Villainy guys give Sable crap for losing to generic G1As in the final of that regional. It's not anything to be ashamed of, as they're not very good targets for bombs, and the guy had a plan to not get bombed, but Sable went on record when they first came out as thinking that the G1A was a crummy ship, particularly when piloted by generics.

Yeah, he poo-pooed them pretty darn hard if I remember. :D

From what I saw in the MA Regionals final table, a well-flown K-wing bomber list absolutely devours Dengar.

Do not underestimate getting hit by an unavoidable Conner Net, and then next turn taking unavoidable cluster mines, or other Equally Bad Stuff. with Sabine crew, triple K-wing bombers are Definitely A Thing.

I must give full credit to Jade McGovern for the list. While I had been flying k-bombers, in some form for three months, adding a third one to the list made it a load of fun. Had a lot of great games vs a lot of great opponents and even got to play Jade in a mirror match during round 6 of Swiss (Jade flew it better but my dice were on fire).

To be fair, Chris had a brilliant strategy against the bambers.

Absolutely!

Does anyone know if there will be video available from the Idaho regional?

What was his strategy?

Castled in a corner so Mark could not swoop in and lay mines. When he did, he lost one K-wing quickly.

He basically fortressed for much of the game, with the Z95 pointing toward a corner and the G1As pointed out from the corner. It makes it very hard for the K-wings to avoid shots using SLAM or to drop bombs on enemy ships.

Castled in a corner so Mark could not swoop in and lay mines. When he did, he lost one K-wing quickly.

Sounds nice, but a bit like fortressing? Hopefully this will not become standard.

It might versus bomber K-Wings.

It is a case of having a strategy fit the situation. I do not know why people have such an aversion to fortressing. The game does not provide a means for it to work for long in any given match. Honestly, had Mark not blanked out on two key roles three-quarters of the way through, I think the results would have been different.

They have such an aversion because it makes for a sh*tty game. I've noticed this happening way more frequently on Vassal (talking about casual matches). Defenders endlessly k-turning in their corners etc...

The reason it worked in the finals was because Daniel had a dice advantage for Final Salvo. He had zero incentive to break the fortress until Mark approached him. Was definitely a good and viable strategy.

Does anyone know if there will be video available from the Idaho regional?

Shawn was taking walkarouund videos from time to time, and they'll go up on Phoenix Fire's Facebook , I think.

1. Lost to Yorr w Sensor Jammer/Inquistor/VI Carnor led by Karol Pietrowicz (Naboo Open Series Runner up). 36:68. Bad plan for a battle plus some mistakes (landing on the debri) against excellent opponent. Game recorded will be on Legion YT channel.

What is the legion YouTube channel? I can't seem to find it.

You can watch the Austin Regional on Twitch here:

Final match starts at about 4 hours, 4 mins - both Daniel and Sable played really well.

Am I the only one that thinks this is how tournaments should be played? A wide cut after a moderate amount of swiss? I'd love to hear what those who participated in the tournament felt about the tournament organization.

Am I the only one that thinks this is how tournaments should be played? A wide cut after a moderate amount of swiss? I'd love to hear what those who participated in the tournament felt about the tournament organization.

Ideally, at a large event you want the tournament structure to do 2 things:

  1. Every game played by a player still in contention should matter
  2. All the X-2's make the Cut (need more rounds to let things settle out)
  3. Grant a first-round elimination round bye to the top-seeded swiss players (at a minimum all undefeated)

Unfortunately, this requires more overall rounds, and also more planning. It would be appropriate to do this for Nationals and Worlds, but FFG's goal with tournaments is to basically run them as short as possible, so only the x-1's or higher get in.

As an example with this year's Worlds:

  • Swiss increased by one round, so all the 7-2's got in.
  • Elimination rounds increased by 1
  • The 8-1's and 9-0s get a first round elimination bye, essentially jumping directly into Top 16.
  • An 8-0 should not have to play Swiss round 9. Give them a round 9 win and the above bye directly into Top 16.
  • The remaining cut fills out the first round bye.

Example: the top 6 players go directly to the Top 16 round. 20 more players (generally all 7-2) qualify for the cut and play in the first elimination round "Top 32".

For Regionals this is harder because the events are already really long relative to the prestige level. But 5 rounds of Swiss and 5 rounds of elimination seems weird. 6 rounds of swiss and a top 16 cut is much more normal, certianly for X-wing. In OldPara's case he should have made the cut at 4-2 anyway.
