2016/2017 Regionals Season Results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

Am I the only one that thinks this is how tournaments should be played? A wide cut after a moderate amount of swiss? I'd love to hear what those who participated in the tournament felt about the tournament organization.

People complained about:

1. Not enough Swiss rounds.

Everybody wants to play more on Saturday when you got plenty of time and there is no rush to go back to hotel early. Yet it was only 5 rounds at Saturday leaving ppl hungry for more x-wing :)

2. Too much Top rounds

Even in relatively small Poland trip to Regional for lots of ppl is like 400-500km. We usually travel by car with group of friends.

If one person of this group is in the Final or close to the top, rest needs to wait for game to finish before they can go back to home. With Top32 it's 5 rounds if TOP for finalists! And rest of guys is doing nothing, waiting for friends to finish. Good if there is interesting side event, but unfortunately lately TOs in Poland tends to take some Furball/pair tournament as side event and not everyone likes it.

It happens me to be in the Final, and my club mates waited like 4-5h for me to finish, doing nothing (well, supporting me ofc :) )

Due to some delays in the middle tournament and decoration ended like 8 PM. We were home like 2 AM Monday with perspective of work im the morning. It's really not good design.

Everyone wished 6 rounds of Swiss/Top16 next year.

In Poland we got common understanding that ideally 9/10 rounds of Swiss would be the best (all players could participate to the end and one unlucky loss doesn't kick you out of the competition for 1st place), but TOPs are so attractive for audience/YouTube etc and it's so good for popularity of the game that it needs to stay as it is. With minor adjustments that at least 1/4 of players should participate in tops. So we don't strictly follow FFG regulations about how big Top should be regarding tournament size.

Another great event at Flat Land Games! 122 players attended, and we had an excellent stream going for every round. There were a lot of great lists being played, and every match I played was a joy. I know someone has volunteered to get the exact list data put into list juggler, so we can see the remaining Top 16 and the 10 or so players that were on the MoV bubble to almost make the cut.

Man, Parattani is picking up steam. How many top 8 finishes is that now, 6?

It's a strong list. It's one of those lists that you know all the components shouldn't all fit in one list, but they do.

It's a strong list. It's one of those lists that you know all the components shouldn't all fit in one list, but they do.

It also has a high decision density despite a relatively few number of upgrades. Flying it well is not trivial, but greatly rewarded. Most matchups are yours to win if you fly correctly.

Parattani and other Manaroo Mindlink lists are super solid. MI Regional had quite a few Attani lists in the top cut.

I specifically ran Gunner + Hotshot Copilot + Darth Vader so I could combat those lists (especially Fenn Rau), as I was sick of losing to them, lol. It almost cost me on earier matches where Rebel Captive would have served me better than Vader crew. It took until the finals for me to finally match Fenn Rau and Attani! Lol!

I figured that's why we had so many Decimators with HotShot CoPilot because of the increase of Attanni Mindlink lists along with Poe showing up more often again.

Assajj/Palob/Thug just won the Fargo Regionals as well (against a Mindlinked Manaroo/Kavil/Findsman list!). There were plenty of Dengaroo and Defenders pilots all over the field as well, so it wasn't a factor of underrepresentation of "meta lists". It just goes to show that skill and unorthodox but effective listbuidling mean a lot even in today's environment of "Defenders or Dengaroo or Bust".

Kudos of the list Philip. After we saw it Sunday evening we immediately decided to take it for further tests as a candidate for top club list (among Parattanni, Commonwealth Defenders and Scum Aces) to rule the Polish Regional's season ;) Hotshot, Gunner, Vader, Juke... what a nice synergy.

As for direct Parattanni vs your list comparison I believe it's evenly matched. All is about flying and asteroids placement. Fenn Rau should run out like hell from Decimator and serve as focus factory during initial rounds, and Manaroo and Asajj are bulky enough to take Deci down (especially with Asajj's stress-to-evade and evade action). Then is Fenn + leftovers vs. Ryad.

Do you have a link for the stream?

I've yet to see it played, does Manaroo in the Paratanni list typically like to play close to add firepower and block, or stay back and fuel the other two from safety? Obviously it depends on the opposition, but from a general standpoint what do you look to do first?

Castled in a corner so Mark could not swoop in and lay mines. When he did, he lost one K-wing quickly.

Sounds nice, but a bit like fortressing? Hopefully this will not become standard.

It is a case of having a strategy fit the situation. I do not know why people have such an aversion to fortressing. The game does not provide a means for it to work for long in any given match. Honestly, had Mark not blanked out on two key roles three-quarters of the way through, I think the results would have been different.

They have such an aversion because it makes for a sh*tty game. I've noticed this happening way more frequently on Vassal (talking about casual matches). Defenders endlessly k-turning in their corners etc...

The reason it worked in the finals was because Daniel had a dice advantage for Final Salvo. He had zero incentive to break the fortress until Mark approached him. Was definitely a good and viable strategy.

As a pretty new player, I agree with this. This was boring as hell to watch and if I played against something like this in a tournament (haven't played in one yet), it'd probably turn me off of ever playing in a tournament again. This is an example of the competitive scene taking the game in a direct which is outside of the spirit of the game, which is to fly ships.

What's to have prevented the K-wing player from just flying in circles and them never entering combat? What would happen then?

It depends on situation but once I've lost in 1/8 Regionals Final because Manaroo being too far form the fight I tend to use her two dices/blocking abilities actively. She often gets through the defenses despite only 2 dices as she is firing usually at already tokenless targets. She bites even Defenders thanks to that.

0 points would have been killed, so to avoid a draw it would go to "final salvo", which you can read about in the tournament rules linked on the pinned thread.

It would have been 11 dice vs 6 dice, in favor of the fortress squad.

Anyone have top 4 info from Wisconsin regional?

The only time I ever play Manaroo from a distance is if she's at death's door. Otherwise, her 2-3 dice turret and ability to block up the field are too valuable to leave out of the battle.

I entered in the Top 16 from the info provided by Flat Land: http://lists.starwarsclubhouse.com/get_tourney_details?tourney_id=2384

Dash/Miranda won GA regional vs Degaroo in the final.

WV won by Biggs + 2 Wardens. Beat out Mindlink Serissu, Roo and Rau.

Streamed by SteeleTV on youtube (which is great. I really think those streaming on twitch need to switch to Youtube. Twitch is really rough for those with slower systems).

Paul and Duncan also made cut, both playing different variations of Bossk + Ketsu.

Finland Capital area Regionals 10. - 11.12. (30 players) was won by

3x Bandit Squadron Pilot (Homing Missile, Guidance Chips)
