Tournament list lacking significant upgrade cards in need of help

By Hawkwing, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

As the title suggests, the following list could benefit from key upgrade cards and possibly other ships as well. Currently, I own the core set and the following expansions:

1x Corvette

1x Nebulon

1x MC80 (Home One)

1x Assault Frigate

2x Squadron packs

The list I am considering using for an upcoming tournament looks like this:

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 388/400

Commander: Garm Bel Iblis

Assault Objective: Most Wanted
Defense Objective: Hyperspace Assault
Navigation Objective: Dangerous Territory

[ flagship ] CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- Garm Bel Iblis ( 25 points)
- Jainas Light ( 2 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
- Overload Pulse ( 8 points)
= 81 total ship cost

CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- Dodonnas Pride ( 6 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
= 52 total ship cost

Assault Frigate Mark II B (72 points)
- Adar Tallon ( 10 points)
- Flight Controllers ( 6 points)
- Expanded Hangar Bay ( 5 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
= 100 total ship cost

Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points)
- Yavaris ( 5 points)
= 62 total ship cost

3 A-Wing Squadrons ( 33 points)
1 Keyan Farlander ( 20 points)
1 Luke Skywalker ( 20 points)
2 Y-Wing Squadrons ( 20 points)

Fleet created with Armada Warlords

My question to you is help me identify the shortcomings of this list and what possible difficulties I might encounter when playing against other popular builds.

Am I better off playing an entirely different list for a tournament or can the list above actually be competitive?

I have not yet had the opportunity to try it, though I have played very similar renditions of it.

Best regards,

Hawkwing

I'd take Jainas Light, the defensive upgrades, and OLP off of the corvettes.

Throw in Dutch and Wedge.

Then I'd also change my commander to Dodonna.

Take out Keyan (he's too slow for your list, and the only way you have to make him faster is Adar Talon, which dictates your activation order)

Throw in another Y and take away an A.

Trade flight controllers for gunnery teams.

That gives you 8 deployments, 4 activations, and 16 points to play with

–I made a lot of suggestions here, about 62 points in all, but your list can work just fine as is, and I kept it basically the same. The only changes I would absolutely suggest is to change those corvettes. Your flagship is fragile, and is A-ok with not having offensive upgrades on it. It may even be better as the tantive, flying behind your other ships in safety and passing them tokens. It doesn't want offensive upgrades because it doesn't want to be in the fight. Or it will get blown up. The other one is fine with just the title, especially if you change your commander to Dodonna.

I made the suggestion of Dodonna because I also suggested adding a lot of bombers to your fighter force. Those will help, and Garm Bel iblis doesn't do much to help your two 1-command ships. Dodonna helps everyone. Except the As.

I also added a lot more in the way of Squadron firepower so that you could replace flight controllers with gunnery teams.

Yavaaris would also be great with Raymus/vet captain. Or you could put Tantive and Leia on your flagship (save another ship by sending a token and command their way).

Just some things to think about.

Thanks for your response and your suggestions!

With the changes you suggested, the fleet would look like this:

Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 392/400

Commander: General Dodonna

Assault Objective: Most Wanted
Defense Objective: Hyperspace Assault
Navigation Objective: Dangerous Territory

Nebulon-B Escort Frigate (57 points)
- Yavaris ( 5 points)
- Raymus Antilles ( 7 points)
= 69 total ship cost

Assault Frigate Mark II B (72 points)
- Adar Tallon ( 10 points)
- Gunnery Team ( 7 points)
- Expanded Hangar Bay ( 5 points)
- Electronic Countermeasures ( 7 points)
= 101 total ship cost

CR90 Corvette B (39 points)
- Dodonnas Pride ( 6 points)
= 45 total ship cost

[ flagship ] CR90 Corvette A (44 points)
- General Dodonna ( 20 points)
- Tantive IV ( 3 points)
- Leia Organa ( 3 points)
= 70 total ship cost

3 Y-Wing Squadrons ( 30 points)
1 Wedge Antilles ( 19 points)
1 "Dutch" Vander ( 16 points)
2 A-Wing Squadrons ( 22 points)
1 Luke Skywalker ( 20 points)

I do understand the reasoning for switching out the commander, since Garm is wasted with two Corvettes. However, the lack of defensive upgrades on the corvettes, at least the B-type, makes them somewhat vulnerable. I think the suggestions are rather good, though I need to find a way to include some B-wings. Perhaps in a MC80 list D:

I should probably just invest in some transports, it would make squadron heavy builds more viable : /

I quite like this latest version

The collection you have works just fine, especially if that's what you're comfortable spending for :) And Ilike this list much better. More synergy. And yeah, Bs love them a turtle list, unless you have the new FCT upgrade. Which is like a retail $40 investment.

Tantive also works really great if you pair it with Raymus. This way you could either send 2 tokens to different ships, or send a token and still use the command for your flagship. As to what you'd do with Leia? I'd trade her for something else, maybe leading shots on DP. Maybe nothing at all. It's up to you. But that's the last thing I'll say. It's your list, and you should play it how you feel, getting comfortable with using it and knowing what you like or don't like about it.

Though I will explain Squadron numbers right quick- deployment strategy is a key to winning Armada, and having more deployments than your opponent is a method to "win" the deployment. i.e., you can force your opponent to place his flagship down first by delaying with Squadron placements.

You get 1 deployment for each pair of squadrons, thus having an odd number of squadrons (as in your first list) means that last Squadron has to be your last placement, and is typically seen as being inefficient, though it's really not a huge deal. As one wise forumite posted not long ago, It just helps to know what you're missing out on by now taking an even number before you decide to take an odd number.

i. Raymus and Tantive - I had no idea that combo was even possible. Thank you for this insight. Guess Leia is out D:

ii. I will certainly put leading shots on DP. I have the shittiest luck when it comes to rolling dice (triple blanks on Salvation 2 times in a row - never forget). I'm not taking any chances :P

iii. I had been pondering what to do with deployment. It occurred to me that having more deployment was beneficial in relation to delaying deployment of key ships, just like you stated. I had perhaps underestimated the significance of this factor - I reckon this just counts in favour of using squadron heavy lists.

Thanks for all of the input so far.

And thanks, Ginkapo, for your approval of the changes :P
