Scourge the Heretic, Innocence Proves Nothing

By Peacekeeper_b, in Dark Heresy

In both of these books written for Dark Heresy, there isa lot of infomation on the setting, including organizations not in any of the rpg books. Has anyone compiled the data/information for the Shadow Franchise? The Sanctuary of the Blessed? The Conclave of the Enlightened? I know these books are not 100% accurate with the Dark Heresy setting (the books are about 180 years past the Dark Heresy time line), but still some great data.

Especially for the Misericord.

Havn´t done it (yet:)) but I second your opinion. Organisation-wise and general plot-wise it´s different from most of what we are presented in Dark Heresy supplements, but they are both quite good novels and description of enviroment is priceless. Not only Misceroid, which is ace, but also Iceholm, Tricorn, Gorgonid Mine, Hive Sibellus, void stations in Scintillan system or Citadel of Forsaken are memorable and useful for all DH GMs and players.

Plus end of Innocence Proves Nothing has one of the funniest twists I have ever read in BL novels: (SPOLIERS AHEAD)

"I think we´ve just killed an Inquisitor."

(/SPOILERS)

Hilarious:D

By the way, at the end of 2010, there´ll be new Sandy Mitchell´s book, called Emperor´s Finest , which I think would be third part of his Dark Heresy serie.

Is anything other than the title already known? Sounds more like one of the typical Cain titles to me - the DH series had Thoughts for the Day.

Either way I will behappy to have another Mitchell novel. Especially a Cain one, but Im sure there will be a third Dark Heresy novel.

I second the call for a bit more DH from Mitchell. They're not awesome books, but I find them much more enjoyable and...sensible than Abnett's Ravenor series (too long since I read Eisenhorn so I wouldn't want to misjudge).

Just halfway through IPN at the moment, but enjoying it thoroughly. My only misgiving with the series is the dates, it's set well into the future of DH 'setting's' timeline, isn't it?

I've just started them both. I'm finding them a little hard going, to be honest - I'm a huge Le Carre fan, so all the tributes/sendups make me wince a little bit. Sandy Mitchell loves puns.

Plus calling a group of acolytes "Charlie's Angels" is a little bit much....

I think new DH novel is more feasible, as Ciaphas Cain will get second omnibus. Don´t get me wrong, if it´s seventh Cain novel ( http://www.blacklibrary.com/releases.php ) being released alongside DKoK novel and after Shira Calpurnia Omnibus, I would have no objections against World End in 2012, for I´ll die in ecstasy :D

Well, it´s Sandy Mitchell, we´ve already seen small but noisy chaos warmaster with funny mustache... I quite like how he handled Vex, not every player could imagine how to handle otherworldness of Mechanicus to the extreme as presented in Dark Apostle, Soul Drinkers or Dark Adeptus (heh), and Vex is quite a good guideline. Plus he is remarkably nice chap.

P.S.: second quote is of course LIghtbringers... damned quoting system!

I think I should stay out of this thread for as much as possible since I have yet to read Innocence Proves Nothing. Though I must say that Scourge The Heretic was a really nice addition to the novels about the Inquisition, especially since it is situated in the Calixis sector itself. Sepheris Secundus just felt a lot more "alive" after having read that one.

Though I usually like Sandy Mitchells books (well, it's mostly just the Cain books, but hell, how can you NOT just love them?) and as stories about the Inquisition go I found Scourge The Heretic to be a little hard to compare to Abnett's superb Eisenhorn and Ravenor books, it was still quite enjoyable with much interesting info to use for DH games. So if any of you feel up to the task of compiling certain information, then that would be just dandy. happy.gif (can't help out much myself since the one I read was lent to me by a friend)

I read the first one and honestly thought it was perhaps the worst 40K novel I've read ... and I say that having read Brothers of the Snake! gui%C3%B1o.gif

Boring cardboard cutout characters having one turgid sit down meeting after another. Dull, dull, dull.

Having said that, out of desperation for setting detail I recently bought the second to mine for stuff such as descriptions of stuff like the Misericord. I think Sandy Mitchell is good at stuff like that. I shall skim read it and mark those bits.

Scourge the Heretic was very different from Abnett's works, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was obviously intended to give a Dark Heresy player's eye view, which naturally means more acolytes and less Inquisitors.

I got Innocence Proves Nothing for Christmas, I'm hoping to have a chance to read it soon.

I personally enjoyed both books.

As for the dates, since the DH books are already known to be a bit on the baffling side for nailing down a solid campaign date I simply took the move of declaring that things at the start of the campaign are "as presented" in DH and set the time to coincide with the 13th Dark Crusade.

My only real beef with Sandy Mitchell is his habitual dressing Techpriests in WHITE robes. As we all know, the Omnissian Priesthood of Blessed Mars wear RED robes to indicate their loyalty to "the Red Planet".

I seem to recall some techpriests wear white robes trimmed in red - this has been portrayed in 40k art for a long time. Indeed, one of the earliest images of a techpriest (in a White Dwarf circa 1988) shows a space marine commander of the Mentor Legion being dressed by a purely white-robed techpriest.

Personally, I would imagine it's a question of rank and order within the Mechanicus.

Although perhaps it's a bit like what a Scotsman wears under his kilt: we know what they're SUPPOSED to wear...but what they ACTUALLY wear is in fact very much a matter of personal choice.... happy.gif

But I guess you haven´t yet read Emperor´s Mercy*....

*ok to be honest, it wouldn´t be that bad book, if there wouldn´t be no Inquisitor Roth, Inquisitor Celeminé, terrifing naked exibicionist who scarred Celeminé, eight millions pointless contemplatings of Roth how he should die in Emperor´s service, repeating of words "Spathian Combat Plate" and "Tang-war pattern Powergauntlet" at least dozen times each chapter, long and boring narrative in non-battle scenes, logical and fluff errors and so on... **** that´s about 90% percent of whole book**

**So yeah, if it would be just about Silverstein, Imperial Guard and Ironclad***, it would be ace (that´s why I´m giving some chances to Flesh and Iron)

***and Stone Gauntlets and Blood Gorgons...

Oh, sorry guys for getting horribly off topic, I just couldn´t help myself:P

Same here. I already wondered how they would deal with the red robes on Sepheris Secundos. Should my game venture there, I'll probably have any techpriest visiting the world "employed" by the queen (who will never have heard of them and won't make use of their service anytime soon, but doesn't want to lose face by letting unauthorized people run around in red).

Just a thought: Sandy Mitchell wasn´t first who dressed Tech-priests in white. There was character for Inquisitor, Magos Delphane Gruss (IRRC his name), who wore white robes as well. I think it depends on orders of Mechanicus (which weren´t detailed closely as far as I remember), part of galaxy and of course, writer (or painter).

I´m just wondering what kind of robes had Magos Biologis Sanja in Shira Calpurnia novels, I think it´s worth to check... *entering Black Library*

Maybe if they have white robes they wear red underwear, and if they have red robes they wear white underwear? As long as they don't wash them together, everyone's happy!

I actually managed to chat to him for a bit quite a bit (poor guy happy.gif )at a recent games event getting while getting my nice new book signed.

He said that his next book was a Cain novel - going back to his days working with a Space Marine Chapter (after he goes through the Necron portal IIRC) and includes quite a bit set on a Space Hulk. The title certainly fits?

His novels are my favourite Black Library - althought here are a quite a few others close by.

I was trying to persuade him to write a Horus Heresy novel as well - be intersting to see where he would take it.

One of the best things, for me, about his Dark Heresy novels are they are very much like a rpging session................and full of fun and good charatcters whilst still retaining a certain level of darkness - and yes the end of Innocence was great - if frustrating!

back to the OP - compiling the info within it would be great - not time at present but I might put it onto my evergrowing list of things to do...............

I really enjoyed Emperor's Mercy and look forward to more by Henry Zou and more Bastion Wars Novels. I find many of the novels skip, ignore or botch fluff and liked the portrayal of Roth as it was a nice change from the constantly super characters we always see.

And yes, I look forward moreso to more about Silverstein than anything.

Afterall, the worst 40K novel is definately Kill Team!

Da Boss:

I love you...

Peacekeeper_b:

Well, Roth was borderline emo in my opinion, if I was realy harsh, I would call him Edward Cullen in Warhammer 40k... not everybodies tastes match, for example, I love Kill-team, as the Last Chancers were my beginings with whole 40k universe.

Not really sure what an Edward Cullen is. I wouldnt call him emo however, just he got down and depressed halfway through the novel. Bound to happen to someone.

And yes it had boring parts, but I do recall 50 some pages of Eisenhorn book 3 just being a train ride through the space alps. Now that was boring.

Let's go and shatter someone's world...

You monster! You are destroying his innocence!
