I saw something today and I hadn't realized there was actually an order to the tournaments - so am I right in thinking that to get to Worlds someday, you have to do Store Championships through Nationals to get to Worlds?

No. All of those tournaments are open tournaments. So, play in what you can. That chart just describes the seasons, though Nationals tend to be out of season.
They do sorta kinda lead to each other in a way...
If you win a Store Championship you get a Bye at Regionals. If you win Regionals you get one for Nationals, ect... Plus in some parts of Europe winners of the Nationals get flown over to the US for Worlds.
But as Sithborg said it's not required that you show up or win in any one level to make it to the next.
Technically speaking I believe you could have a worlds event comprised entirely of people who have never competed in a tournament before since it's just first come first serve registration. Unlikely but there is no restriction other than internet speed that I know of.
Thanks -how does a "bye" work?

For Worlds they do reserve places for Nationals winners IIRC. Otherwise accurate.

You present your bye to the tournament organiser and you get a win with 150 MoV in round 1 rather than competing.

I thought this might be the case but I wasn't sure.
I think an all amateurs worlds event would be hilarious in a certain way.

That meta would be wide open.

The entire tournament scene is all amateurs. There are no professional x-wing players.

Technically correct, however I meant amateurs as in not veteran xwing tournament players. People who haven't won (or even played in) regionals or nationals or the like. A 'noob' tournament if you will

My impression is that the bulk of players at big tournaments are relative newbies. You get the diehards who go to everything and are amazing, but the people on 3-3, 2-4, 1-5, 0-6 in the swiss are mostly fairly local I think.

winning Regionals beginning this year also gain you a guaranteed spot at worlds but no bye.
Edit: this is only for US and Canadia

No, I got several thousand in cash from FFG to play the new wave 9 ships at worlds. I am considered to be pro
I quit my job for X-wing
(just joking)
